Flake Introduces Legislation to Limit the Duration of State-Issued Driver's Licenses for Foreign Nationals
Representative Jeff Flake (R-AZ) has re-introduced legislation to establish a national standard for the issuance of driver's licenses by states to foreign nationals. Flake's legislation, H.R. 655, would bar federal agencies from accepting for any identification-related purpose a state-issued driver's license, or other comparable identification document, unless the document issued expires upon the expiration date of the alien's authorized period of stay in the United States. This legislation has 15 cosponsors and is fully supported by FAIR as an interim step toward securing state-issued identification documents. (Flake had similar legislation pending last Congress that was successfully reported out of the Immigration Subcommittee but never approved by the full Judiciary Committee.)
Action Needed to Advance this Legislation:

Please contact your Representative by phone, fax, and letter and ask them to cosponsor this important legislation. Also contact your Senators and ask them to support similar legislation in the Senate. For help contacting your elected officials, follow this link to the Elected Officials section of FAIR's Legislative Action Center. Please refer to the talking points below for help crafting your message.

Talking Points:

The 19 September 11 terrorists possessed a minimum of 22 state-issued driver's licenses - most of which were used to board the planes they hijacked.

Three of the September 11 hijackers were illegal aliens, having overstayed the terms of their nonimmigrant visitor visas.

Rep. Flake's bill responds to this problem by limiting the issuance of driver's licenses-with some exceptions-to foreign nationals who possess valid visas and requires these licenses to expire on the same date as the visa.

If enacted into law, Flake's bill will make it much easier to identify illegal aliens and would-be terrorists and begin the process of removing them.

I don't know much about Rep. Flake, but he seems to be one heck of a guy. I just read his press release about the grammies on drudge's web site.

Looks like AZ is in goods hands with him in office. I just wish more elected officals had some nuggets like him.

Wait a minute.

I distinctly remember hearing Flake (great name by the way) say that he does not agree with the efforts to stop illegals from crossing our borders.

Can anyone point us to his stand on illegal aliens? Has he changed his entire policy on this subject?

Yes Terri, *I recall that we had a discussion on here a while back about Flake the flake. *It seems he was all for open borders and never met an illegal he didn't like. *Maybe he's had an eye opening and maybe not. *I'm wondering if this bill might have a smelly fish wrapped up in it? *But then, I'm a suspicious guy. Maybe cuz I've seen enough of these congress critters do a 180 way too many times.

Terri, Jeff Flake gets a 92 rating from the American Conservative Union - he supported most of the bills that they were in favor of. I know he along with Hayworth of AZ voted to defeat the new version of 245i in 2001.

Flake's big issue is a guest worker program but he is deadset against putting the military on the border. I support a guest worker program too but only as half of the solution and only after the borders are controlled as the first half.

I did a little research and found mixed info. You can all check it out for yourselves. There is much more available.

On Monday, April 7, the Georgia legislature will be voting on HB 578. *Hidden within this legislation, named the Economic Development and Public Safety Act, is a provision which would allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. *However, this bill differs from those in other states in that it only wants to offer this privilege to illegals from Mexico and Latin/Central American countries. *It discriminates against illegals from Europe, Africa, and Asia, among others.

If you have any friends in Georgia, please have them contact their Georgia Representative ASAP. *There is great concern that this bill is going to pass unless citizens speak out.
