I see my rep, Walter Jones is included as one of those questioning the cards along with my hero, Tom Tancredo. *Looks as if the rest of you need to write your reps and let them know how you feel. *If it hadn't happened so quickly I would have thought my letter to the Prez had something to do with it - I wrote him yesterday. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Mexican ID Card for Illegal Aliens Hits Roadbock
A growing issue of national concern is the Mexican government's distribution of matricula consular cards, an identity card given to Mexican nationals, many of whom are illegal aliens, who reside in the U.S. The Mexican government has successfully lobbied many state and local governments and businesses, and most recently a federal government building in California, to accept the IDs for establishing identity, opening bank accounts, and various social service use.

In response, FAIR issued a press release recently calling on the Bush Administration and other government leaders to speak out against the growing acceptance of the card's use in undermining illegal immigration enforcement. In addition, several members of Congress sent a letter to the Attorney General (AG) protesting the government's silence on the issue. This press release and the AG's letter triggered media frenzy, generating a front page, above the fold story in the Washington Times entitled "Mexico Gives IDs to Illegal Aliens." The story caught the attention of political pundits and talk radio personalities, including MSNBC's Buchanan and Press, who debated the issue throughout the day and into the evening hours. (If you missed Dan's appearance on Buchanan and Press, check out the transcript on MSNBC's website.)

The growing public controversy landed the issue again on the front page of today's Washington Times, with the headline "GSA bars Mexican ID cards For Now." The General Services Administration (GSA) has decided to look into the acceptance of the controversial card and announced that the card would no longer be recognized by government officials pending a State Department investigation.

In addition to Dan Stein's quotes in the Times stories, FAIR staff has conducted more than 15 media interviews on this issue in the last few days.

What You Can Do:
Find out if matricula cards are being accepted in your community as identification. Check with local banks, local law enforcement, and local city agencies. If so, try to educate them on why the matricula cards should not be accepted as a form of identification - use FAIR's handout. Also, please let your regional field director know about what you found.
