Safari- the DOD's new "adopt a Terrorist" effort has yet to debouch throughout the nation. But is well underway, we just don't see it yet.

Most likely Sean Penn is a good candidate for this...

Hi All,

Interesting local article from the local paper. It turns out that not all monetary pledges actually translate into actual cash to the disaster relief victims. In past disasters, about 15% of the pledges were actually translated into dollars. While the Straits Times did not go into specifics of the American involvement, Germany's pledge was conditional on resolving the Sri Lanka and India (Kashimr) issues. You have to wonder what some of the other countries decided to "condition" when making their pledge. Ours should have been $350M and they can choose 100 liberals to help them rebuild.

As a side note, I've received no response from Michael Moore on his specific donation to the victims. I guess he needs his profits to keep his weight up.

heehee...I got away with it...I did NOT do trivia yesterday!! I'm such a rebellous one. LOL OK, now that I have been a non-conformist, and flaunted it, I'd better get to it before ya'll come after me with pitch forks. LOL

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">What do you think has been the most significant technological advance for home use?
Cell phones...hubs can call me from anywhere (except Iraq back in March 2003...go figure)

What do you consider as your best talent?
tough one...I have two loves in my life (I'm not talking about friends and family)...playing the cello, and riding. And the two aren't related, so how do I compare playing the Elgar Cello concerto to competing in 3 day eventing? I guess on a technicality, I'd have to say playing the cello, since I majored in Cello performance in college...but I could have gone to Merideth Manor and majored in Equestian Management...LOL And I did ride on the college equestrian team... LOL And since college, I've made more $ in horses than music...not to mention, I actually like teaching children to ride...I don't really like teaching children music. Alas, I am babbling, and forgot that there are more questions to answer. LOL

What do you wish you could do better?
at the moment, I wish that I could play that Army video game better...I get too worked up in close firefights, and panic! Then I get killed. LOL Then hubs has to laugh, and say he's glad that I'm not one of his soldiers... so then I have to http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif at him. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif In a larger scale, I wish that I had more patience, and less grudge holding.

What is the worst decision you have ever made? becoming engaged my freshman year of college to my highschool "sweetheart" who was really just not a nice guy (the not so sane stalking type I later discovered).

What is the best decision you have ever made?
Ditching the aformentioned LOSER . And going to Lowes Hardware one evening in search of a new toilet seat...and instead run into (literally) the love of my life (but we didn't know it yet...heck, we didn't even know eachother)...of course, as a result, someday we are going to have to tell gradnkids that we met over toilet seats.... *BLUSH*

How far would you drive for a "real" bargain?
depends on the bargain...big sale, I'll drive to Darmstadt (about 1/2 an hour on the Autobahn). Amazing cello or horse, to the ends of the earth (hubby willing)

What is your favorite way to relax?
Curled up under the covers, surrounded by pillows, with a good (ie not from the book section of the gas station) book...or mucking stalls...those who aren't horsey folk are probably turning up their noses...but in the quiet of a stall, applepicker in hand, one can contemplate life, plan one's next adventure, plan the next prank on the hubby, go over that last dressage class, or clear ones mind completely, with nothing to interupt one's thoughts, other than a whicker from the next stall, or the fact that the horse belonging to the stall you are in somehow managed to poo in his water bucket...EWWWWWWWWWW WW! LOL I can almost smell the hay now...

What do you think should be the government's top priority in 2005?

To me, getting rid of the illegals.
But since, in reality, we all know that is not going to happen, I will settle for heightened efforts to bring more young people into our military. Oh, that's not realistic either, is it? Neither is kicking the UN in the pants, shoving the dems to the curb, chucking stupid judges, or shipping Bush critics to France. Um, I guess that I will ask that they protect the good that we still have, since asking them to remove the bad is too much. I won't even ask that they not add anymore bad, since I know that is too much.

What do you consider to be the most important domestic issue in the
country today?

Not sure where to stash this little tidbit, so advice is appriciated.

The Nationl Defense University in DC is having an Eisenhower Symposium Jan 26-28. Cost is between $100-200 depending on whether you are a student or not. It looks VERY VERY interesting. Wish that I could go. Unfortunately, I got word of this VERY late, and registration closes on the 12th. So, if anyone is up to late minute plans...here's the deal for you! LOL I'm going to let my brother know about this...and he'll be thrilled that our Daddy is currently TDY in DC, so he'll have a place to stay! LOL
Anyway, here's the website with the details:

Howdy Y'all!

Greetings from springtime. I know there's lots of snow and rain out west, but I've still got to brag about our North Texas weather yesterday--sunny and 74`F. Now don't ask we about next weekend. They're saying teens and even single digits. Must be Texas weather. Go figure.

Despite the nice weather and my getting a lot of outside stuff taken care of yesterday, I still managed to prepare our Monday morning http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallkk.jpgs, http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallchockk.jpgs, http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallsprinkles.jpgs, http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallcreams.jpgs, and http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smalljelly.jpgs. Enjoy!

Y'know, the libs are so upset that the Constitution allowed President Bush to steal yet another election, I bet that even if Kerry had won they be clamouring that they shouldn't have to wait until January 20 to take office. I mean after all, it just the Constitution that requires it.

And to Sean Penn, I think I'll start a little activism of my own. I think I'll start actively not paying my good money to see your movies. There! Go shove that!

My busy Monday starts soon. Y'all have a great day.

Good morning all.

My dad died yesterday afternoon in the hospital out in Brownwood Texas. His health has been failing for a log tome and he was ready to go. I had seen him last Thursday and was going back with my daughters on Tuesday but now my brother and I will be going there today to tell my mother that Garland is gone. Mother is just across the street from the hospital in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s and other complications that have left her totally dependent on my Dad physiologically and emotionally. We are unsure just how bad this will be but we know it will be bad. We don’t know if we should try to take her to the funeral on Wednesday or not.

We are already working to move Mother closer to Austin so that we can be closer. We moved her to Brownwood in the first place so that she could be near her sister but Mother has not been very nice to her sister so we will try to move her in spite of the doctor saying that a move could make her catatonic. My Aunt Mary Joyce couldn’t take much more with Garland alive and there with Mother so we have to move her for MJ’s sake.

The last time I saw Mother, last week, she didn’t know who I was and decided that I must be her brother. My younger brother and I being there didn’t help settle her down at all and the nurses told me that no amount of medication seemed to help her when Garland was in the hospital. He had been in and out of the hospital with enphazima and the last time I saw him at the nursing home a few days before he went back to the hospital he was on oxygen and could hardly make it to the bathroom.

My wife is up so I have to get going.

GR ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your father and your mother too. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Please know that I will be praying that you find the strength to do what will be best for your mom. What a difficult time for you. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/grouphug.gif

Tonja ~ if it weren't for WalMart, we wouldn't have anything of consequence in the whole of Hardee County. I'm in Zolfo Springs and WalMart is north of Wauchula about two miles. About ten miles from where I live. The chances of Zolfo Springs ever growing (at least in my lifetime) are nil. I go to Sebring and Lakeland for the big malls.

pRIM, you go to Sebring and Lakeland? *I was hanging out a lot at the Lakeland mall in November and December. *Amanda works in Lakeland and I had to go to work with her several times so we could drive to Clearwater for her fittings. *So...while she worked, I shopped. *Sebring? *Now there's a sleepy little town that is beginning to awaken. There have been times I felt like we lived in Sebring because of the races. *In fact, for years and years we always spent the day after Thanksgiving in Sebring for the SCCA races. *UGH! *That Publix could make you http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif ! *Well...if you ever decide to get out of Z.S. we'll find you some nice property here for your horses...I even know of a wonderful Vet for large animals! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif Oh...we could have such fun! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yes.gif

Greetings All,
I've been gone a long time! Did you miss me? I missed you all. Anyway, it's good to be back in the forum.

GR, so sorry to hear about your dad. When my nephew was murdered back in 1993, my brother said this: " I don't grieve for Patrick. I'm glad for Patrick. I grieve for those of us left behind." My nephew and dad and you dad, GR, are in heaven and far better off than you and I are. My prayers are for you and your family for the peace of God Almighty to surround you all and while your eyes cry the tears needed to cleanse the soul, that your heart continues to smile for the joy of having your dad in your life.

Just wanted to say "hi" to you all and I'll be back more often now that things in my life have settled a bit. In the meantime, may God richly bless you all and may He grant you, this day, His wisdom to know the right direction to travel, the courage to go there, and the strength to carry on His work.

GR; I really do feel your pain. My Mother had that dreaded alzheimer's and for the last 18 months, she didn't know me from Adam. She passed away at 94. My oldest Brother also had it and passed away at 83.
I suffer from emphysema and there are days when I pray the Lord will take me.
Each day seems worse than the day before and my activities are down to 'O' and I run out of air and am on oxygen 24/7......

Sorry to cry on your shoulder, you have enough of your own tears, but keep the chin up and remember the Lord is with you all the way......

It especially hit home to me, as just before I read your post I was talking to my Mom on the phone. My Dad has Alzheimers and my Mom is the only caregiver. For the past week he has been enraged about not being able to drive and taking it out on my Mom. My Mom was crying her eyes out on the phone to me, and i heard all kinds of confusion in the background. My heart aches for you, being on the other end of this ordeal, and here i am just starting with it. May God comfort you and your family and give you peace in your hearts.

One wonders why the end of life is so difficult?

GR - My prayers are with you and your family. I pray the Lord will give you the strength you need.

.................... .................

May I still say Good Morning Everyone? Doesn't seem quite appropriate at this point - but it is good to see everyone - yes, it is.

Jeff - welcome back.

It rained heavily last night but there seems to be a slight break in the clouds at this time.

Monday is chore day, but when one hears the troubles of others, then the mundane chores of the day are welcome.

When we were at the movie yesterday we saw coming attractions which included a movie with Sean Penn. Sorry, Mr. Penn, you will have to earn your living sans any contributions from me.

Remember how you went to Iraq? Remember how you showed us the pictures of the starving Iraqi children? Remember how you said this was the fault of the United States?

Well, Mr. Penn, I suppose any of us could have made that mistake, however, since you now know who it was who stole that money that was supposed to feed those children, and it wasn't the United States - I have failed to hear your apology. Did I miss it?

You owe us all an apology. You smeared us all.

I don't blame you for your activism, but for your blanket condemnation of the United States with inadequate investigation and without an apology from you upon subsequent knowledge that you were wrong.

I don't hold your activism against you except that you did it in foreign lands. You went to foreign shores to condemn us. That's the act of both a coward and a traitor.

No, Mr. Penn, my money will not be going to enlarge your coffers. I know you won't starve, or even notice the difference, but I will know.

There was another movie trailer that did look good..."The Merchant of Venice." Three good actors are listed:
Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes. I am considering seeing this.

In case any if you missed my post yesterday about the movie we saw: "Sideway" - unless you love scripts that use the F word throughout, and some really raunchy explicit gratuitous sexual display, don't go see it. I felt dirtied afterwards.

Yes, I am both an old fashioned girl and a nerd.

What really gripes me is that it was recommended by someone who's opinion I value.

Anyway, hope you all have a great day, be useful, be good, and be kind to yourself.

GR, I am so sorry to hear that you have lost your dad. I also identify very closely with your problem with your mother having had much the same situation. However, even though we worried a lot we were luckier in that my stepdad outlived my mother and was her caretaker for nearly 20 years. Medications act differently in Alzheimer's patients. And I understand about the funeral. I suppose it depends on if she realizes what is happening and insists on going. She may not. This is very difficult. My prayers are with you.

Jeff, it's good to see you back. Of course, we remember you.

Bud, hang in there. My husband has COPD too and it's not an easy disease.

Mary-Lou, my mother had it for 19 years. My stepdad took care of her at home as long as possible and then visited her every day, often twice a day, in a nursing home. I'm so sorry that your parents have this burden too.

Basheva, have your heard Charles Krauthammer going on and on about how good Sideways is? *I think I will pass based on your review.

And yes, Good morning is appropriate. *We'll just mix everything in here just as we would if we were gathered in the local cafe. It's ok.

IMHO, heads may be rolling at CBS, but unless Rather's head is one of them, it's meaningless. He has always presented himself as someone who is very involved in the news-gathering process for the stories he presents (and, apparently, in the process of presenting fiction as fact). If people were going to be fired, he should have been first in line.

CBS President Les Moonves expressed regret and said the public has "a right to count on CBS news for fairness and accuracy." http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rotflo.gif

Yes, Terri - that's one of the people "whose opinions I value" that I posted about and I made the decision to see that movie.

It never occurred to me that he would advocate such a film. It is R rated, but I have seen other R rated films that were not nearly like this and not gratuitous. For instance...Schindler 's list had nudity, but it was intrinsic to the story. In this movie it was not. And nudity was the least of it. Let's just say ....hmmm...it was an action film. Don't bother to go. Save your money.

The rain has stopped here. I don't want to hear anyone in the Water department saying anything about a drought or a water shortage.

However, the fire dept will now say that because of all the rain the plants and scrub will grow and we will have a huge fire season, so let's raise your taxes.

On the other hand, when there is a drought, the fire dept. says - we are having a drought and therefore everything is very dry and we will have a huge fire season, so we are going to raise your taxes.

Which brings me to another gripe or two or three...

When the new job creation figures come out everyone expresses disappointment because they didn't meet expectations. Whose expectations? Oh, I see you just set an expectation (some pie in the sky figure) and then you are all set up to be disappointed.

Same with the sales at Christmas time. The merchants just come up with a number they would like to see sales at, and when it doesn't get there - well, then the entire season is a failure.

Ok - I can do that too. I expect my income to increase 50% this year. Let's see if that works for me.

When it comes to figures (other than girls) I am at a loss on how to compute, I was told once that in big business, you project a figure for your next years budget, say $2M but you only took in $1M, you then write off a $1M loss and a deduction or write off for tax purposes. Now some of you are big money people, is this correct?

This won't matter to the Liberals. Remember they overlooked every other scandal of the Clintons. It isn't what their candidates did in the past, it what they will do for the liberals now. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yelclap.gif http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yelclap.gif Jeff is back! *We did http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/missyou.gif Jeff! *Glad that everything is situated so that you will be gracing us with your beautiful blessings each day. *Yes...I know, God gives the blessings, but you wish them to us so beautifully! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yes.gif

LAW...I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE PHANTOM! *I've seen the play twice...would have seen it three times, but I gave my really, really, really good ticket to my daughter's husband ("boy" friend at the time) but that's okay. *In fact, it was last January 15th that Kerry and I went to see it. *Even Kerry thought it was great, and he doesn't go in for plays! *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/ne_nau.gif

pRIM please let me know when you will be in Leesburg and we'll surely get to gether! *See...if you move from Z.S. to this area you can even be closer to your SIL! *It's a win-win situation! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif

Basheva, Danny and I were just discussing the fact that they just don't make movies like they used to. *Example...Casablanc a, Sabrina, Now, Voyager, etc. The kind of movies where there was romance, but it was intriguing...not "in your face". It's too bad. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *Oh, every now and then a good one comes along, but unfortunately those will usually have an actor or actress that has shot off his or her mouth so I won't put money in their pockets by seeing it. *What's a person to do? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif

Mary-Lou, I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this terrible situation concerning your parents. Your mother is lucky to have you to talk to and cry with! *You're in my heart and prayers, as are your parents! *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flower.gif
Bud, you are, too! *My brother was diagnosed with emphazema a couple of months ago...he's only 47. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *He hasn't any of the usual signs yet. *They found it during an x-ray and a scan. *They first thought he had lung cancer, but all of the tests show it isn't cancer.

Okay...back to business...did I dream it or did I hear that they thought they had captured A.Z. ? *I guess this means they didn't, huh? *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif *

We can only hope that this will come back on the http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/witch.gif but I think the Teflon description is pretty accurate. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif

Well, I've got things I should be doing, so I'll check back later.

Ya'll be good, now, ya hear?

Projections are not taken into account for income tax purposes. Only real numbers should be considered.

Now, that's not to say that some people will lie, like Enron and WorldCom.

Now, the government is great for using fuzzy math. If they say that the budgets should increase by 3% per year and when they only increase 2%, they say they saved money.

It's like my wife finding a bargain and telling me that she saved some money.

That is good logic with me. Since I would have bought it anyway, I saved money. But, I don't buy things on sale unless I do want or need them. And, I will even wait for something to go on sale until I absolutely don't want to wait any longer or I need it right now.

It's like new cars. I won't buy one unless there is zero percent financing and that way I can leave my money in my investments making more money than the payment. If I take the money out, I not only have a car that is depreciating, but my investment return is decreased too. It also has to be an investment that makes more than the "cash back" substitute for the zero financing over the term.

Starting to get cloudy here in Phoenix and looks pretty dark north of us. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cloud.gif

I have seen some good romances. *I thought The English Patient was terrific. *As soon as I saw it I knew it would win the oscar that year - that was well before it was even nominated. *

I also read the book. *Usually the book is much better than the movie, but not in that case. *I thought the book was terrible, but I adored the movie.

There was another film I saw that I enjoyed - but the name escapes me. *Something like: "The Widow of (some French Island). *It was about a woman who lived on a French Island (I think in the Caribbean) and she fell in love with a Frenchman who was condemned to death by guillotine (no, I'm not going to look up that spelling) and they had to send back to France for it. Took a year to get to the island. *And, all that time during the love affair they knew he was going to die. *WAH!

I am very bad at remembering names of movies. *And I'm really picky about what I go to see. *I don't like to get assaulted by a movie, like we did yesterday. *For the record, my husband agrees that the movie yesterday was trash.

I didn't realize you live in the Phoenix area. *One of my all time favorite hotels is there: *The Camelback Inn in Scottsdale. *And inside of the hotel is one of the few 5 Star restaurants in the USA: The Chapparal Room. *The lobster bisque was heavenly. *Same for the cherries jubilee. *I love when they have someone playing the harp *during supper.

We used to go there for Christmas. *One evening we walked in from a really cold blustery night - and entered this lovely old hotel which is built like an old Mexican hacienda. *Big beamed ceiling in the "living room/lobby" huge fire places with the fires crackling, Navajo rugs. *Pine smell. *And a heavenly chorus!!

Yes!! I am not making this up! *When we walked in we heard these angelic voices singing = not a tape - live! *

Some tv station was broadcasting from the hotel and this boys' chorus was singing. *

That place is really really special. *It was the place that Barry Goldwater went to on election night to wait for the votes to come in. *It's owned by Marriott and rumor has it was J. W. Marriott's favorite place.

It's easy to see why.

No, I won't be seeing Sideways. I can enjoy a movie if bad language and nudity are in context but not when it's based on that.

Does anyone here use Netflix? We've thought of subscribing but I doubt we would find enough movies that interested us.

GR, we are sorry to hear of your loss. Losing a parent is very difficult even if you know it is coming. I know, I lost my father a few years back and couldn't even complete the eulogy. He was with cancer for a long time and even though he made his peace with God, I found it hard to lose him. Our prayers are with you in your time of loss. I pray that you recover from this difficulty and rebound stronger from the experience. Go with God and know that we are your friends and will help you in this time of need.
God Bless you always.

GOOD AFTERNOON, YA'LL

First things first--GR, I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm sure you know your Dad is in a better place! I remember the day after my daddy died, who was always extremely active, as I'm sure your Dad was, a preacher came over and said, "just think, today he can climb a peach tree"! Of course, he was probably already organizing a domino game or some kind of chore for the rest of the folks and making sure they got it done! But, keep in mind that you are in my prayers, also. It's never easy to say "good-bye" no matter the age or condition! We love you!!

Terri, 112None subscribes to netflix and she always seems very happy with it and she seems pretty picky to me!

Stan, is that the one that's coming out with the Porn films http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif One of the big DVD renters is--can't remember which one, but I know it wasn't netflix!

Oh, has anyone seen a review of Newt's book? Rush said he was criticizing the president in it--if that's the case, he certainly would never be considered for my vote. We have enough http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jacka.gif sses doing that--we don't need http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/elefant.gif s doing it! That's my http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twocents.gif on that matter!!

Not much else to say--it's hot here! Low 80s, but I'm sure that will change--that's the one thing we can always count on--really, really hot one day and cold as the dickens the next!!

Ya'll have a good afternoon!

Hi everybody!!

So newt is criticizing the President?? And you did notice that The poodle is in iraq and syria?? Its all a ploy to run for the WH in 2008. No other reason. Newt is distancing himself and criticizing the President and the poodle is trying to make himself look better. Its all politics. I have a surprise for both of them. Katy, I love musicals, too. I bought albums of many of them over the years. Now I'm gradually getting CDs of my favorites when I can find them. Have you seen "1776"? I think you'd like that one.

Kid Rock is a popular vulgar rock-rapper.
The Detroit-based rapper dedicated his first album to songs about oral sex and who was voted the Sluttiest Male Celebrity at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

Kid Rock's first album, "Grit Sandwiches for Breakfast," fixates on sex, including one song, "Yo Da Lin In The Valley," that describes the lyricist's exploits with multiple women in detail. Another similar tune is "Wax the Booty."

Also featured on his 1990 debut album is "Pimp of the Nation," which ironically takes a swipe at Bush's mother. The lyrics include:

Pimp of the Nation, I could be it
As a matter of a fact, I foresee it

Thanks for the all the neat movie replies. I did notice that NetFlix seems to have a lot of musicals.

We want to get an LCD TV so if we do we might join.

I don't think I've heard GOPUSA (Bobby) take a position on Kid Rock being invited to a GOP function.

If you're asking for my personal opinion, my understanding of it is that he may or may not have been invited to the twin's party.

It doesn't bend me completely out of shape. I would think he would probably keep it pretty clean for an inaugural party.

He has gone out of his way to support the troops in Iraq and I believe he also supported the president for reelection. A rap Republican, if he is one, would be a pretty rare creature.

I have no interest in his rap or dirty lyrics but I have seen him on some shows with country singers and he isn't all that bad a singer. Maybe he's growing up a little, who knows.

Btw, I should probably say that I probably would feel differently about other rappers. I just happen to have seen this guy on country music shows. And anyone who supports the troops will get a bit of a pass from me.

Speaking of mud ......and slides...

Though the people who have lost their homes certainly do have my sympathy, they don't have my understanding.

Everyone here knows that the cliffs along the ocean are unstable. There are signs not to WALK on them, let alone BUILD on them.

If you look at some of the canyons that empty into the ocean you can readily see how unstable the ground is. One doesn't have to be a geologist or any other kind of 'gist' - it's visible to the uneducated eye of even an uneducated person as I.

People build here on very precarious hillsides along the ocean as well as inland. Again, one can SEE that it is a disaster waiting to happen.

There was a housing development here back in the late 1970's that we looked at when we considered moving "up" - but one look at the lay-of-the-land and I shook my head "no."

Sure enough about 6 months after people started moving in - the hillsides started giving way. People lost everything.

So, we just stayed in our old but lovable and convenient house. No fancy hills, no spectacular views, no terraced gardens. But at least it stays in one place.

No rain for a while now but we are told that there is much more on the way.

Meanwhile - you will be happy to know that the Tijuana River is flooding which means two things:

1. Mexico doesn't process its sewage but sends it directly out to sea through the River. Tijuana is a very large city - well over two million people. Yep - that's a lot of sewage. The ocean currents move it north, so the entire Southwest Coast of these United States are all contaminated as we speak/type. Don't you just love it?

2. The illegals will be fording the flooded river. No, they don't stop coming just 'cause it's raining/flooding. This means OUR Emergency workers will be up in helicopters at night trying desperately to pull them out of the River. Then they go directly to our hospitals. Guess who pays for all of that? Guess who risks their lives trying to save these people?

The Compassionate People of the United States of America.

Why am I feeling so feisty....I don't know...supper was very good.

Yes, I did like it - in the abstract.

From the article:

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr class="standard"><td>Quote </td></tr><tr class="standard"><td class="QUOTE">We are not a welfare state. We are a free country and freedom means that you can build your house on a cliff or on the shore or even next to power lines. But with that freedom comes responsibility -for your self. Buy more insurance, find storage for your valuables on safer ground, but don't expect me to pay for your lack of concern or foresight.[/QUOTE]

But the reality is that when a house falls down off a cliff then firemen are brought in to rescue people if need be, the police need to secure the site so no one else will get hurt, and to keep further pollution from the tangled mess from happening. So, the taxpayer does end up paying.

The reality is a bit more complicated than the abstract.

In the same vein, of course, one could say let the people trying to cross the flooded TJ River drown. But you know we are not going to do that.

It's just not going to happen.

As for old movies, I watched Key Largo last night in its entirety on Turner Classic movies in glorious black and white.

Bogey and Bacall! And a big Florida hurricane. Edward G Robinson! Oh it was terrific.

My Dad used to bring a 16 mm projector home from work and we would watch movies that he was working on. They were mostly Cold War Training films about the DEW Line and SAC, as Dad worked for Bell Labs, and was responsible for repairing and splicing the films. So as a little girl growing up in the fifties, I watched hours of films about radar emplacements in the Arctic, B52's, missile trajectories to and from the Soviet Union, etc. Last Night, on the turner classic movies, i also saw Dr Strangelove, a movie i had been obsessed with as a young teen, but hadn't seen in years. i was astounded at myself as i recited the movie nearly word for word with the TV. I even knew when the backround music was coming in., and sang along with Vera Lynn in the end with "We'll meet again". I guess i had been obsessed with Dr. Strangelove, because after being raised on B52 movies, i figured it really could have happened!

During the sixties, Dad brought home MUCH more fun movies, like
The Great Race", ALL of Nelson Eddy and Geannette MacDonald's movies, and an older version of The Phantom of the Opera, starring Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster and Claude Raines as the Phantom. The music was from Tosca, and a Russin style Opera that used the music from Tchaikovsky's fourth Symphony. We also had my FAVORITE comedy of ALL TME, Some Like It Hot.

Did you see that FOX cancelled the Mickey Rooney ad in which he bared his butt for the camera. *Rooney at 84 must be getting senile and his wife right along with him.

I see Abbas has already been invited to the White House by the prez unlike Arafat who wasn't even allowed on the porch.

Why the heck is Newt criticizing the prez? * He must be trying for the leftwing vote! *I'm sick of all the politics that being played. *Heard some other senator shooting his mouth off (didn't recognize his name) and saying we must get out of Iraq. *The Senate and House *are full of traitors.

If Newt thought he was making headway with the conservatives he's barking up the wrong tree. *This is definitely politics at its worst!

Re: Memogate........... Mary Mapes knew before she issued the report about the president's service in the ANG that the president had volunteered for duty in Vietnam. *Lt. Bush was turned down because there were more men senior to him in training. *He was not yet considered experienced enough.

I'm sure no Dems/liberals will ever know that.

Got the newsletter all out after getting 3 new articles this morning. *This is the end, though. *I've said, "No". *Up to now I've been allowing people to send in articles 2 *- 4 days after the deadline. *No more!

The destruction from the rain is terrible out west. *I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I saw the evening news. *My gosh, if it isn't raging forest fires it's floods!

Btw, I'm listening to Sax by Candlelight, Greg Vail, tonight. Very soothing.

Basheva, I'm not so sure that Nancy's article should be, or even is, completely abstract. If people are determined to live in dangerous areas then I can see pulling them out of the mud and putting them in a public shelter, but I don't see the value in paying for the multi-million dollar houses sliding down the mountain. There is a time for compassion and a time for common sense.

Yes Stan, I think the porn company will even have a different name so that most people won't realize it is owned by Columbia House. I do have a credit card but it isn't used at CH for anything.

PapaJ - hope you feel better tomorrow.

When I don't feel well - a cold coming on - I have a fresh orange. That always seems to help, even more than orange juice. Don't ask me why one would be more efficacious than another.

I keep oranges in the house just for that reason.

Spring must have sprung when I wasn't looking. Today I bought a basket of strawberries - the first of the season. They were only 99 cents. They are grown here in San Diego county.

Nasturiums are coming up and ready to bloom, geraniums are in bud, birds are getting busy, cat is looking hopeful (she's much to old to hunt), but even she blooms anew in the spring. As do I.

No rain at this time. All's quiet on the Western front, so to speak.

Those big musicals of the 1930's you have been discussing? Several of them were choreographed by my first ballet teacher. She was quite a special lady.

Yes, of course.

And there is nothing in her article with which I disagree, but the reality is that when people make poor choices, even though we are not going to allow them to re-build, or allow them to get insurance (especially government funded insurance, etc.) there is still a cost to all of us.

Even when people comply with zoning laws which were designed to prevent these things from happening, things still happen. Sometimes it is the fault of the original building contractor. Sometimes it is a broken water pipe or an unknown or new underground stream.

I don't think there is anything that happens that doesn't impact others because we really all do live interdependently, even when we don't want to or don't want to admit it.

I think it is incombent upon government (because that is the enforcing agency) to see that zoning laws are in place that are reasonable and consonant with the necessities of the site, that construction practices are such that these things are minimized.

So, I do agree with Nancy's article, but there are other realities that intrude and therefore denial of responsibility on the part of innocent parties is not always completely possible.
