WASHINGTON (GOPUSA News) -- The looting of the DC Teachers' Union by some of its former officers has produced its first conviction. Leroy Holmes, the former $100,000-per-year chauffer for the Washington Teachers' Union, pleaded guilty to money laundering in connection to a probe of over $5 million missing from the union treasury.
The driver admitted to cashing union checks in large amounts, keeping some of it for his own salary and giving the remainder to union officials. Holmes did not report the income to the Internal Revenue Service, but has not been charged with tax evasion.
While facing a maximum sentence of 20 years and a fine of $500,000, Holmes has pledged to cooperate with federal investigators. Other union officials have been accused in an FBI affidavit of stealing, but charges have yet to be filed. Those named include the former president, Barbara A. Bullock, her executive assistant, Gwendolyn M. Hemphill and James O. Baxter II, who was treasurer.
