During an extreme storm, a ship in the far reaches of the ocean goes down without warning and without time to send a rescue message. The 20 men on board are forced to abandon the ship and sail away in two 10-man rowboats. The rough seas are too much of a match for the small boats and they are quickly destroyed as they crash against the rocks of a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, all 20 men make it to the shore of the island safely.
The next morning, the Captain informs all that they must immediately begin building a boat to carry them from the island. One dissident disagrees and says that ships sail by the island all the time and all they have to do is wait for a ship to come in. The Captain then asks for volunteers to help him build a boat. 9 volunteers quickly respond. The other 10 men are resolved to waiting for their ship to come in.
In about 8 weeks the food is almost gone, no ship has come in, and the Captain’s group of men have finished the boat. Since only 10 men have built the boat, the boat is a 10-man boat. As they sail away, the other 10 men are hollering and screaming and calling them names because they would not let them go with them, and because they had not built the boat big enough for 20 men.
