Moore's Bush-Bashing On College Campuses Subsidized By Taxpayers

RICHMOND, VA (Talon News) -- Liberal film producer Michael Moore is making the rounds on college campuses to promote his anti-Bush film and lambast the current administration, while the taxpayers are picking up the bill. Moore is expected to garner $40,000 from the University of Nebraska and a whopping $50,000 plus a security detail at Utah Valley State College, where the annual budget for guest speakers is just $50,000.

The controversial director of the Bush-bashing movie "Fahrenheit 9-11" was also asked by George Mason University to appear at the GMU campus in Fairfax, Virginia on October 28, but it appears that the invitation has now been revoked.

Students, parents and elected officials are outraged that taxpayer funds are being paid to Moore. In fact, conservative Republican Virginia state delegate Dick Black sent a letter to GMU President Alan G. Merten on Tuesday vehemently protesting Moore being asked to speak, noting that the $35,000 fee is outrageous.

I am a student at George Mason University and was outraged to hear that Michael Moore was being paid $35,000 to appear here for the sole purpose of bashing the President. I am happy to report that the GMU administration scrapped Moore's appearance. *I am disheartened, however, to report that I have recieved word that Democrats on campus are still planning to bring Moore in at no cost and are currently trying to find an alternate venue for the liberal filmmaker. I will keep this forum updated to any developments with this story.

Today, on Hannity, a young girl called in and said the high school band in which she plays was scheduled to perform when Dubya visits Allentown, Pa. The American Communist Lovers Union stepped in and threatened a law suit because band expenses were being paid for out of tax dollars. The school backed down. They seemingly have no problem with the bloated pig receiving tens of thousands from Universities around this country which pay for them out of tax payer money but draw the line at a few hundred for playing before the President of the United States. Mason Cancels Moore Visit, Filmmaker Still Plans to Speak

George Mason University Thursday canceled a scheduled appearance by Michael Moore, but a representative for the filmmaker said Moore was examining other options for addressing the Mason community. Mason President Alan G. Merten said the original terms of Moore’s visit, which had been scheduled for Oct. 28, included a provision for a payment of $35,000 and that officials decided that such compensation would have been “an inappropriate use of state resources.” Merten said he was not initially aware of the proposed payment. “Mason is a big, complex place,” Merten said. “Every once in a while, mistakes are made," and said that attempts were made to arrange for Moore to appear at Mason on different terms, but that those efforts were unsuccessful. Once those efforts were exhausted, Merten said Mason “sent a registered letter canceling the appearance," a step that was allowable according to the terms of Mason’s contract with Moore.

While some members of the Mason community were pleased with this response, others and some Virginia legislators were upset by the fact that such a situation arose at Mason. Robert Brown, a sophomore in Mason’s New Century College, said he viewed Moore’s visit as a “great thing” and was sorry to hear that his appearance was canceled. “He’s a person with an opinion,” Brown said. “Everybody should be able to voice their opinion.”

This is pretty big news on campus right now, the Democrats are spinning this into an anti-free speech issue and still plan to bring Moore in to speak.

I don't suppose it entered Mr. Brown's thoughts that $35.000.00 is a lot to pay for opinions!
