Friendly Iraq-war mouser finds home with Springs GI

Denver Post
July 13, 2004

A cat named Pfc. Hammer has rejoined one of the Fort Carson soldiers who adopted him in Iraq, thanks to an organization named Alley Cat Allies that raised $2,500 for shots, sterilization and a plane ride to the United States.

"Only my husband would go to this extreme for a cat," said Sheri Bousfield, wife of Staff Sgt. Rick Bousfield of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

The tabby cat was adopted by the brigade's Team Hammer after he was born last fall at a base in Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad.

Isn't this a precious story. I can see Adam adopting a cat in a place like that http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag4.gif

I may have told this story on here before, but when my daughter was in Afghanistan she and her tent-mates adopted an orange tabby kitten. Because they have Army vets on hand to inspect meat and dairy products, they were able to have the cat checked out and his health was okay. (always a worry that a stray animal over there might be carrying a disease.) Anyway, she said that little cat made life feel like home. Out in the middle of nowhere, far from home, but they had a cat! I think they turned the cat over to the relief troops that came in behind them, and I'm sure it's being spoiled rotten even today.
