What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

I want to live in that picture! Great Father's Day opener, Terri http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif

1. What's your favorite thing to do on Father's Day?

I would say go out to eat, but we never do. We avoid crowds like the plague http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinangelA.gif I will say going to church would be my favorite thing to do on Father's Day. Did it all my growing up years with my dad, and do it now with my dear hub. The best Father's Day present I ever gave my hubs was . . . a son! Born right smack on Father's Day. I'll never top that one http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin5.gif

2. What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your dad?

Lesson, hmmm. If you had said gift, it would be the same gift Ronald Reagan gave to his son Michael~~the gift of knowing the way of salvation. I'll forever be grateful for the upbringing my parents gave to me and for the privilege of living in a Christian home. Nothing ~ Nothing can compare to it.

3. What is your favorite comforting bible verse, poem or saying?

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: Be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." Isaiah 41:10

4. We've been talking about literature a lot lately. What is your favorite genre when you read for relaxation?

I'm reading "The King of Torts"~~I just started it, but am half-finished. I'll have to say fiction for relaxation~~a good suspenseful mystery. Love anything to do with law, fbi, cia, politics, government, victorian ages, as long as it has suspense and mystery. This is why I don't let myself go to the library very often. I can't put a book down once I start reading it. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif Either I do my dailies too fastly http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif or I don't do them at all, if I have a good book that I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEED to finish. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

5. When someone gives you flowers do you prefer a plant or cut flowers? What kind?

I used to think plant, but I'm not too fond of taking care of them, so I'll say fresh cut flowers. Roses smell so good.

6. Would you rather entertain in your home or be invited out?

I like both just the same. I love to entertain when I have plenty of time to prepare, and I love to be entertained also. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

7. What is your favorite kind of vacation?

The kind where you can sleep in, sit on a porch, sipping coffee in the cool mountain air glorying in a spectacular view of the mountains and the reflection thereof on the lake. I want a cabin on that lake you posted, Terri.

8. Do you have pets? What kind?

The best kind a severely allergic person can have (that's what my doc said, anyway) Two goldfish. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fish.gif http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fish.gif

9. What annoys you most? (no politics)

I really am a quiet person http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lookaround.gif and I don't like to have idle conversations with people I don't know who want to tell me their life stories. There's something wrong with the people in my town. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yes.gif They just want to http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/chatter.gif all day long, like they don't have another thing in the world to do! I'm not mean, but I want to be sometimes, just so I can get away. I must have a sign on my forehead that says~~"She loves to listen to idle chatter." I don't mind http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif smiling at people and saying hello, but I'm just not always prepared for the onslaught of everyone's life story. Don't forget, this is just about people I DON'T KNOW! I love to talk to all the people I do know. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

May not be back in here 'til Monday evening. Going to pick up sonny #2. It will be so nice to have him home again. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cloud9.gif

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/2.gif What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your dad?

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/3.gif What is your favorite comforting bible verse, poem or saying?

Psalms ~ 1,2 & 3

1: Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2: But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3: And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/4.gif We've been talking about literature a lot lately. What is your favorite genre when you read for relaxation?

Biographical novels.

Plants!

Either one.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/7.gif What is your favorite kind of vacation?

Any! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif But like Laurie, I love the mountains. Been to the Rockies and the Smokies. Nothing puts things in perspective like driving the winding roads in the mountains and looking out over the beautiful tapestry of the Creator's work.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/8.gif Do you have pets? What kind?

I think they have me. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laff.gif Five cats (outdoor) ~ one comes in at night. Two birds and a horse.

http://www.mountainsnmore.n et/gopusa/trivia/9.gif What annoys you most? (no politics)

People with a "steel trap" mindset. It's one thing to defend your convictions, but entirely a different thing to defend the indefensible. It's a total waste of time trying to reason with them ~ so it's just better to avoid the things you know will only lead to frustration. Sounds good, doesn't it? http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laff.gif

Nice opener Terri, I too, wish I had a cabin on that lake.

I liked these.

Quote[/b] ]It would be interesting to know how this holiday came into practice. (http://www.theholidayspot.c om/fathersday/history.htm) Therefore here is a short history on the holiday, and meaning of the different colors of roses to be worn that Day. *
Father’s Day is celebrated in the 3rd Sunday in June. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Roses are the Father's Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.

The La Slimes is blaming the Bush Administration for the terrorism that is taking place around the world. Frank Rich of the New York Slimes, is echoing the same thing.

McLaughlin Group was just a little bit more pro-Bush this morning. But not much. At the end of the show McLaughlin runs a tally of dead and wounded GIs. He also runs a tally of the dead civilians, He implies that they are killed by the troops. From what I have seen, most of the dead civilians are caused by the terrorists.

Guess this is long enough for now. BBL

Thanks for the comments on the lake photo. My family spent a lot of time at that lake over the last many years. In fact, I first visited it as a child and all my kids have fond memories of it.

Quote[/b] ]What's your favorite thing to do on Father's Day?
Have the kids over to pay homage to Dad. They'll be here later today. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Quote[/b] ]What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your dad?
A work ethic, to keep my word and to pay my bills before they are due.

Quote[/b] ]What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your dad?
There is nothing more comforting than the 23rd Psalm.

Quote[/b] ]We've been talking about literature a lot lately. What is your favorite genre when you read for relaxation?
Mysteries

Quote[/b] ]When someone gives you flowers do you prefer a plant or cut flowers? What kind?
Love 'em all. Gloxenias are very nice and lilys. In cut flowers I like a nice mixed bouquet best. From the garden it's definitely lilacs.

Quote[/b] ]Would you rather entertain in your home or be invited out?
Definitely out.

Quote[/b] ]What is your favorite kind of vacation?
An RV vacation in the mountains.

Quote[/b] ] Do you have pets? What kind?
Two cats which are the only unsatisfactory cats I've ever been owned by and one very nice dog.

Quote[/b] ]What annoys you most?
Definitely other drivers. Especially those who drive below the speed limit or at the speed limit and who hesitate when they should be moving to blend with traffic. Can't stand other drivers. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/it.gif

Charie, I know what you mean about the wind on lakes. That particular one is at the 8,000 ft. level and pretty much protected by the higher mountains around it, but the water is extremely cold even in July or August. Gotta really be careful on high mountain lakes.

Howdy Y'All!

Late arriving due to Fathers Day activities in the household. I'm really blessed with great kids and grandkids and they've made me feel very special this morning. Thus http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallkk.jpgs and http://www.terminweb.com/weblog/images/smallchockk.jpgs are a bit late. Hopefully Stan still has room for fresh ones.

We're getting ready to go get Dad for lunch and then it's chillin' out the rest of the day. Not sure if I'll be able to take a nap after sleeping in this morning, but I'll certainly give it my best try.

Back later for trivia.

Mornin', everyone...

1. Not sure I have a favorite right now. Probably spending time with my FIL, although I think a lot about my own dad, and, quite frankly, wish he was still around. I know he would've enjoyed his grandkids... I just wish they'd had the chance to enjoy him.

2. Don't lose sight of the overall picture.

3. "So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:21-25a)" Most recently concerning my reaction to the murder of Paul Johnson.

4. Politics and history

5. I don't recall ever getting flowers, but, if I did, I'd prefer something I could plant and try to keep alive.

6. Out.

7. Driving somewhere around the country... maybe somewhere cooler this time of year.

8. 1 dog, 3 cats.

9. Normally, I would say kids with the cars with the liud mufflers and thumping bass stereos. After yesterday's convention, though, I would say people who can't see past their own self-centered political ambitions to actually do something that is good for an organization (or the country) in general. Mostly, that would be the obstructionist Democrats, but we've got a bitter minority faction within the YR's here that is doing a d*** good Democrat imitation.

Sadly, I considered just walking away from the whole organization yesterday when it was all over. As much as I enjoy politics, the levels of sniping and nitpicking from this group, which will likely increase as they gear up to try to regain power next year, are discouraging and unnecessary. Fortunately, JD Hayworth was one of our guest speakers yesterday, and he made some excellent points about not being willing to give up the fight, so, here I stay, for now...

I know I wasn't supposed to talk about politics there, but it's the sniping within the party, for the sole selfish purposes of gaining power and furthering their own political careers, that's really, really irritating me.

I had a WONDERFUL TIME in Orlando. Every thing was perfect until I got two miles from my house coming home..snack dab into a Speed Trap!! NOT FAIR! Torey the Dog was thrilled to be picked up by me at the doggie country club where she stays while we were away. I'm told she was very good and ate all her food. They gave her a bath and washed her pillow too. If you get to Orlando anytime soon check out their newest ride at Universal..The Revenge of the MUMMY. It is what they call a "thrill" ride. I went on it twice in ten minutes. It's not your mama's roller coaster.

Charie.."Chosin" was a terrible retreat in the Korean War. Veterans of this particular battle were also known as the "Chosin Frozen". They actually found soldiers frozen to death at their guns. Although it was a "tactical retreat" many of our soldiers died. So in THIS case, the sign wasn't misspelled, but I know what you mean. I hate those "ToNite Onlee" kind of signs too. Lets all do what we can to preserve English as America's language! I'm with you kiddo!

Now for Trivia!

What's your favorite thing to do on Father's Day?
BBQ with Dad and the whole family.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned from your dad?

A plant. Stick anything into the ground in Florida and it will become a tree.

Would you rather entertain in your home or be invited out?
My favorite thing to make for dinner is Reservations

What is your favorite kind of vacation?
Hawaii on a Harley (preferably Kauai, Maui or the Big Island, Heck, I'm Easy. Second favorite..sailing cruise through the South Pacific Islands...Marquesa, Tahiti, Fiji, etc. Yeah right..like I could afford THAT!! (Dad's adventures in WW2 inspires this dream!)

Do you have pets? What kind? Torey the Dog. There can be no other rival for the title of "Pet" She is a 13 year old Jack Russell Border Collie. She has the strength, beauty, and intellegence of the Border Collie and the Attitude of the Jack Russell.

What annoys you most? (no politics) Speed Traps in my neighborhood, and the Florida traffic Law system which is just a big scam to make money. To describe it would take another column. Suffice it to say that it is going to cost me more that two three- theme park tickets (Arabian Nights, Sea World, Universal, Holy Land) in Orlando.

All the resort performers do the music of the 70's and 80's (called Classic Rock as a genre) whick is my all time FAVORITE . I mean such artists as Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Foreigner, Journey, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, etc) I am not allowed to play this kind of music at the resorts south of Jupiter (The northern border of Balm Beach County, more or less) I can get away with R&B of the same period, like Tina Turner, Motown and so on, but my huge collection of Classic Rock sequences languishes away. My Teaching Contractor (Elite Music Instruction) does have a branch in Orlando, but my husband's job is here. So I guess I'm just going to have to be a shining light wherever I find myself! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif As you see, I have very eclectic tastes!
On the National Day Of Prayer last month, I had prayed that God would do SOMETHING that would show America the correctness of Bush's conservative policies in pursuing the War On Terror. I also prayed for a respite from the calumnies and slander and vitriol from the left. My sister (who came to Orlando with me) had sent me an email on that day that she was praying one simple prayer..That the TRUTH would become known. I found out about the death of President Reagan right on this website, right on this precinct thread. After talking about it with my sis, we feel that God took President Reagan home at the very correct and perfect time, and that all three of our prayers were answered that day. I'm not superstitious, but I also DO believe in the often literal answers to prayer. The domination of the airwaves for an entire week of Reagan's funeral, Reagan's legacy, Reagan's policies, Reagan's Triumphs, et al, was WONDERFUL. Nary a peep from the naysayers for a change. Then I was away for a whole week, with lousy TV reception, and too much to see and do to be bothered even turning it on! So God gave America a week without the libs, and I managed to get two weeks, without having to listen to their cr#p. But now it's back to work. I have new energy and I'm ready to rumble. LET'S ROLL!

Before you get all hyper - that's not a bad word - it's the verb form of the noun. And it's more than four letters.

Oops... too late. I ddn't see it, but, given that it was in a collegiate dictionary, that doesn't mean much.

Plus, a bad word can have more than four letters. In fact, some of my favorites have more than four, and can be molded into some very intricate and crudely elegant phrases.

See... I did learn something in my six years in the Navy... and I almost revived that skill yesterday with grandiloquence. I'm still smoldering just thinking about it. Guess I should let the wife and kids feed me something.

Some of the remedies i have tried: Yoga, massage, exercise, darkness, heat, cold, hypnosis, faith healing, deep relaxation, music, biofeedback, aspirin, tylonol, motrin, percodan, percoset, darvon, furenol, dexidrine, Imitrex Injection, Imitrex pills, Maxalt, facials, reflexology, accupucture, accupressure. The only thing that really works is the Imitrex Injections but I can't give myself a needle if hubby isn't home to do it. Seems I can ride a Harley for hours, go on killer roller coasters, and jump out of airplanes. I have even stitched up a wound on my own hand. But I can't give myself a needle . I take the Imitrex pill, put heated herbal packs over my eyes and lie perfectly still for an hour waiting for it to kick in. Yeah I know. What a drag. I am convinced in my heart that God has a special place in heaven set aside for the inventors of Imitrex. Whatsover these folks have done for the least of all (me) they have done for HIM. I'm hitting the sheets! Good night all. Stormy..feel better.

Hey Mary-Lou, welcome home. *I'm anxiously waiting to hear about your vacation, since I don't know what one is anymore!
Glad you made it back safely.

Stormy, sorry about your headache. *Ibuprofen usually kicks mine in the "head" (sorry for the pun). *I take about 3 of them and lie down for awhile. *Pretty soon, all better. *Hope you feel better soon.

Well, I'm gonna take a quick http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/em31.gif cruise through the threads and go to bed. *Yawn http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sleeping.gif ...SYT

Welcome back Mary Lou. Sounds as though you had a fun time.

I hate to admit it, but I have been spelling Chosin the wrong way for 50 years. I think what made me think it was spelled Chosen is that it is the Japanese word for Korea. Chosin simply doesn't look right to me. My brother-in-law received a Navy Cross for heroism at Chosin Reservoir. He was in a howitzer battalion and they had to depress the gun barrels and hold them with their bodies because the Chinese were too close to use them on their carriages. (or whatever those gun platforms are called.) He was also in the Pacific theater in WWII where he received a field commission. He was a southern gentleman in the very best sense of that phrase.

Poor you and poor Stormy. How awful to have bad headches all the time.

SILVERHAIRED DADDY OF MINE

Nope. I could even sing it for you, Stormy! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Let's just hope that these beheadings accomplish what nothing else has been able to do and that's change some minds about what kind of "people" we're dealing with. They are inhuman scum and should be dealt with as they deserve. I hope this catapults the White House and our military into more action. I think the reason this keeps on is because these groups don't see any reprisals. It makes them more and more dangerous. They need to be killed on the spot or captured and an example made of them. How about parading them through the streets and let everyone hit them with their sandals? Or making them wear women's clothes? And then solitary confinement until they're found guilty and then hanged. Gee, there's something to be said for the old-fashioned ways, too. How about impaling, drawing and quartering? Where's Vlad when you need him? See what being well-read gets you? All of these really lovely methods of torture before death. I could throw in a few more but I'm getting nauseous just thinking about them.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads. Hope you had a good one.

Mary Lou, just remember, the police are just trying to keep you from strewing your innards all up and down the highway. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yikes.gif

I also agree with you about President Reagan's death being fortuitous. My friend and I were discussing that very thing. I think we were so beat up with the constant barrage of anti-Bush, anti-military brickbats being hurled that there had to be surcease of some sort, and God gave us Ronald Reagan's death as a respite.

Morpheus seems to be hovering around an awful lot tonight so I may as well go to bed before I'm found face-down on my keyboard in the morning having, no doubt, typed all of Shakespeare's works with my nose.

Tomorrows a work day so all of you who do it, work, work, work, please. I plan to just fool around, myself.
