<span style='font-family:comic sans ms'>Good Monday Morning. Welcome to http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gopusa.gif and the precinct where we can sit and chat about whatever is on our mind while we sip on our http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif and munch on our KK's. Today in honor of our lost former president, I'd like to give you this following excerpt from our Chronicle of America Book that goes from Christopher Columbus to 1988. It's entitled "We shall be like a City Upon a Hill. The eyes of all people are on us." (this is originally from a sermon by John Winthrop, first Governor of Massachusetts, delivered in 1630 aboard the ship Arabella, which had arrived in Salem harbor from England, ten years after the Mayflower had reached Plymouth).

In September of 1796, as he neared the end of eight years in office, George Washington, first President of the United States, prepared his famous Farewell Address. Only a few knew it's historic contents; the President did not deliver it in person to any audience. It was dated September 17, and published two days later in the American Daily Advertiser in Philadelphia, addressed to "friends and fellow citizens."

On the evening of January 11, 1989, the 40th President, Ronald Reagan, also nearing the end of two terms, delivered his farewell to the American people from the Oval Office in the White House. His voice was heard around the world, through the medium of radio and television. In the United States alone probably 60 million people listened. His poignant peroration serves as an introduction to this massive work of history (Chronicle of America).

Here selected from his speech, are some of his words:

"This is the 34th time I'll speak to you from the Oval Office and the last. We've been together eight years now, and soon it'll be time for me to go. But before I do, I wanted to share some thoughts, some of which I've been saving for a long time.

It's been the honor of my life to be your president. So many of you have written the past few weeks to say thanks, but I could say as much to you. Nancy and I are grateful for the opportunity you gave us to serve.
One of the things about the presidency is that you're always somewhat apart. You spend a lot of time going by too fast in a car someone else is driving, and seeing the people through tinted glass--the parents holding up a child, and the wave you saw too late and couldn't return. And so many times I wanted to stop and reach out from behind the glass, and connect. Well, maybe I can do a little of that tonight.

People ask how I feel about leaving. And the fact is, "parting is such sweet sorrow." The sweet part is California, and the ranch and freedom. The sorrow--the goodbyes, of course, and leaving this beautiful place.

You know, down the hall and up the stairs from this office is the part of the White House where the president and his family live. There are a few favorite windows I have up there that I like to stand and look out of early in the morning. The view is over the grounds here to the Washington Monument, and then the Mall and the Jefferson Memorial. But on mornings when the humidity is low, you can see past the Jefferson to the river, the Potomac, and the Virginia shore. Someone said that's the view Lincoln had when he saw the smoke rising from the Battle of Bull Run. I see more prosaic things: the grass on the banks, the morning traffic as people make their way to work, now and then a sailboat on the river.

. . . And in all of that time I won a nickname, "The Great Communicator." But I never thought it was my style or the words I used that made a difference: It was the content. I wasn't a great communicator, but I communicated great things, and they didn't spring full bloom from my brow, they came from the heart of a great nation--from our experience, our wisdom, and our belief in principles that have guided us for two centuries. They called it the Reagan revolution. Well, I'll accept that, but for me it always seemed more like the great rediscovery, a rediscovery of our values and our common sense.

Common sense told us that when you put a big tax on something, the people will produce less of it. So, we cut the people's tax rates, and the people produced more than ever before. The economy bloomed like a plant that had been cut back and could now grow quicker and stronger. Our economic program brought about the longest peacetime expansion in our history: real family income up, the poverty rate down, entrepreneurship booming, and an explosion in research and new technology.

. . . If we forget what we were, we won't know who we are. I am warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.

Let's start with some basics -- more attention to American history and a greater emphasis on civic ritual . . . .

The past few days . . . I've thought a bit of the shining "City Upon a Hill." The phrase comes from John Winthrop, who wrote it to describe the America he imagined. What he imagined was important because he was an early Pilgrim -- an early "Freedom Man." He journeyed here on what today we'd call a little wooden boat; and, like other Pilgrims, he was looking for a home that would be free.

I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind, it was a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind swept, God blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace -- a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors, and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get there.

That's how I saw it, and see it still.

And how stands this city on this winter night? . . . After 200 years, two centuries, she still stands strong and true on the granite ridge, and her glow has held steady no matter what storm.

And she's still a beacon, still a magnet for all who must have freedom, for all the Pilgrims from all the lost places who are hurtling through the darkness toward home."

We've done our part. And as I walk off into the city streets, a final word to the men and women of the Reagan revolution, the men and women across America who for eight years did the work that brought America back. My friends: We did it. We weren't just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger. We made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all.

And so, good-bye, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.

Thank you, President Reagan. Reagan was like the perfect father... firm, strong, commanding, patient, passionate and a gentle teacher.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Reagan defined conservatism as it should have been all along, and should be today. This country has benefited because of him.

Many came before and many will come after but none, IMO, have or will surpass the greatness and dedicated achievements that were realized while he was our President. morning all....Laurie thanks for his last speech to the country...I do remember crying thru the whole thing. He was such a great man...but this I do remember...he had his share of criticism too. Any great man will always attract criticism. I do not want to repeat any of the names he was called...but there were many. I loved him...

I think President Bush and President Ronald Reagan have many parallels. Many!

I did write Mrs Reagan a note on the Presidental Library site. she may never see it...but it made me feel as if I had done something. So many people who pass from this life...and after they are gone..you wish you had written them a note...just to say how much you appreciated them. Many for me.

On Friday and Saturday I was in Richmond for the Virginia Republican Convention, we concluded about 2:00 EST. *Afterwards I went to a private reception at the home of former Gov. Jim Gilmore; during that party everyone learned of President Reagans passing. *It was very emotional to hear Gov. Gilmore speak of Reagan, a man he knew personally, while standing in a room with pictures of the two together.

I spent a few hours last night at the vigil for President Reagan held in Lafayette Park (the park directly behind the White House), it was comforting to be amongst others who loved him as much as I did. *I wanted to share this experience with my kids, I wanted to make certain their generation will carry forward his legacy.

Between the convention and the passing of President Reagan this was an exhausting, emotional, life changing weekend. *I feel spent and energized, sad yet joyful - we cannot allow our own sorrow at his leaving us to dampen our joy in his regained freedom.

Stan, The Chicken Dance is INDEED the Funky Chicken. However this noble remnant of the seventies has devolved into a ritualistic display of decadence worthy of THE MATRIX RELOADED (The dancing scene in Zion).

This morning I was punished for my mocking of the ancient dance. When I'm taking Torey the Dog for her morning constititutional I usually use that precious time to pray for our President, Our Troops, etc. THIS morning, however, I could NOT get "The Chicken Dance" out of my head. The ancient demons of the Visigoths who preside over the ritual were getting their revenge for my scoffery! To all of you who expressed concern over my equipment, Thank You. I haven't turned it on yet and don't have another gig at the same venue till August, so by that time they should have forgotten my cowardice in the face of Mother Nature. Most of my gigs are indoors which is a good thing because in South Florida people spend most of their lives under the cool embrace of AIR CONDITIONING. I just got a digital thermostat for our system which is on its last legs. Installation of a new sytem costs about $4000 (less than a keyboard, but still a lot of money!), so we will nurse this one along for as long as we can! Good morning all.

I suppose what the NY Slims meant was that this strategic killing of President Reagan may not help President Bush. Have they questioned if President Bush was really in France. You know that Bush 41 can fly an SR71 and has flown to France and back before. W. was a little late making a statement when President Reagan died so he may have been delayed at the secret landing strip.

I’m sure that the liberals are all in a panic over this whole thing. A great leader who destroyed communism being honored at a state funeral by a great leader who is battling terrorism. Both tax cutting their way to national prosperity. First ladies of the highest character. The two most honest Presidents in modern history.

What can they do other than hope? They can deny that W is the closest thing to Reagan we could or will ever have again but they can’t denigrate Reagan to make the similarities less impressive. President Reagan has rattled liberal teeth once more.

Flower, I bet Mrs. Reagan will read all of those notes in the months to come.

Last night I saw Tom B ask President Bush a question about how average American have not suffered during this war the way Americans suffered during WWII. President Bush had no answer but to ask him how he would have us suffer. Tom had no answer but to say that gas rationing wouldn’t be appropriate. The liberals want more suffering in this country. They forgot about the national suffering in the days after 9/11 and want the average person to suffer until they vote for a dem who will hold their hands and lead them back to the days of Carter socialism with double digit inflation and interest rates.

Good morning all...Another day at hand...we had FOUR major storms roll through last night...complete with Tornado warnings...wind, rain, Golf ball size hail in some parts...Beautiful day today tho...I had shoved all my flower pots under the picnic table etc..so they will live for awhile longer...LOL..

I saw the Tom B interview of Our Guy...I thought President Bush did very well....has anyone heard any of the usual put-downs yet???

I'm finding out at work just how very loved Ronald Reagan was to the average citizen in our Nation. The whole building is abuzz with talk of Ronald Reagan -- *all of it good, respectful, and loving. Now, if we can just get the building manager to lower the flag to half staff.

I read an editorial speaking of how President Reagan's critics would refer to him as a "reckless cowboy". Anyone notice just how well this country seems to do when we turn our leadership over to "reckless cowboys"?

My mother always said when she was beset by bills: "Just be glad if you can pay them."

I have applied that philosophy to chores.

I have laundry to hang out - be glad I am able to do that.

I have a house to clean - be glad I have a house and can still clean it.

I have a supper to make - be glad I have someone to share it with.

I have windows to clean - well, it's better to have windows than not to have windows.

Yesterday was an emotional roller coaster - be glad I have emotions to help with the ride.

Good mourning, GOPUSA. I know we're all a bit saddened that Reagan died. Personally, I sad for the family he left behind, but I am also grateful that he died, for his family, as well as he, need not suffer through Alzheimer's anymore.

President Reagan, though he is gone, still has one more campaign in him, I believe, through the body of George W. Bush.

Reagan's fight against communism is no longer at the fore, but now the fight against terrorism has replaced it. Just as the assassination attempt on Reagan early in his Presidency helped shape him, and his vision of the world, so too did the assassination attempt on America on 9/11 help shape George W. Bush, and his vision of the world.

Some would argue that the Bush we see now isn't the same Bush we saw campaign in 2000. I would have to agree. This Bush is, by and large, a better one, just as Reagan, though great already, was made better his near-assassination.

God Bless the memory of Ronald "Dutch", "Gipper" Reagan, the Reagan family, George W. Bush, and America.

The death of President Reagan has brought back memories of that time. I remember how sad I was when his time was up...and that I was not particuarly enamored with Bush 41. I just thought that NO one could ever take the place of RR. I voted for 41 but was never really impressed with his time in the WH..but I was devestated when clinton beat him in the election. For 8 years I never listened to what he said or looked at him on tv. Thank God and Greyhound he is gone.
When I first saw Bush 43...I thought oh just a chip off the old block..but I was wrong. He may be some like his father but he has his mothers fire! I was in Reno the day of the Inagural Parade and when seeing the protestors boo The President of the United States...I was horrified.. I felt sorry for The President and the First Lady...I took more time to watch him and learn about him. I have been impressed ever since..and defend him at any chance. I didnt remember until now how Reagan had the same group to contend with. I had just forgotten. I think President Bush has many ways like Reagan...although not as good a speech maker,, but I do remember them calling Reagan a bumbler. So I guess W is in good company. At least President Bush is not the slick mealy mouthed poltician we have come to see in Washington. I think he is honest..and forthright and the press cant handle it nor him. He may be a cowboy...but HE is my President...You go George!

Also the Presidential Prayer Team has a lovely tribute as well.The left is really showing it's evil heart during this event. I pray that the eyes of America will be opened by this, just as they were immediately after 9/11. If America was united with the same SPIRIT that prevailed in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, I believe the Islamists would be defeated already. Either that or they would be bombed out of existance. I really and truly believe that all the naysaying, criticisms, carping, whining, and divisiveness of the left are undermining our Nation's ability to defeat this evil. I wish all of the new networks had a person who we could talk to about this type of reporting. I happen to see this type of reporting as treason. They know that they are lying.

Reagan adored his wife, and she adored him.

Reagan had children who were "difficult" but who have come to realize the wisdom and goodness of their dad.

Reagan served as Governor of one the Union's most prominant states .
Ditto for George.

When Reagan came into office there was a major recession brought on by a weak democratic predesessor. It took time to fix it but he did.

Reagan initiated tax cuts to fix the economy and it worked.

Reagan came into office during a time when there was a worldwide threat of annihalation and the end of civilization as we know it. He worked to bring this evil system to an end.

Reagan called the USSR the Evil Empire. He was totally excoriated by the media for saying that.

Here is an example of journalism that slides under the radar in a way that the reader might hardly notice....

In US News & World Report (which is not as lefty as most of the news magazines) last week had an article about the ongoing events in Iraq. It talked about the insurgency and how everything President Bush has tried to do to quell it has failed. Then it states that the efforts in Falujah and Najaf have been successful because they were handled differently by the American generals. That the American generals used means other than military and that proves there are many ways to get a solution to a problem and that President Bush needs to learn this.

Let me parse that for you if I may.....

When things go wrong - it's President Bush's faulty ideas.

When things go right - it's the American generals who are trying new and innovative things.

Excuse me? Do you think the American generals on their own were able to make deals, have truces, broker other means to take care of the militias?

I bet President Bush had to okay every one of those truces, deals, etc. He only gets the blame, never the praise.

What absolutely wonderful tributes you all have written for President Reagan. Each of us, in some way, has been made better for having had him lead us those eight years. Years that have not as yet been matched, and may never be. He was the "quintessential" definition of the word leader. He was graced with alacrity and an ability to reduce the most lengthy discourse with an aphorism, leaving his opponents defenseless.

The story about his encounter with Desmond Tutu comes to mind. After a lengthy abritration with frustrating results he was asked the next day by one of his advisors, "how did it go with Tutu, Mr. President." Hi everyone. We got our DirectTV hooked up yesterday and the first thing we saw was CNN doing interviews with people who knew President Reagan and that was the first we had heard of his passing. *It was a sad day indeed. *I agree with Terri though when she says that we really lost him a long time ago when his Alzheimers took him away from us. *My mother passed away from level 5 dementia (extremely rapid form of Alzheimers) so I know what it's like to watch bits and pieces of a person disappear on a daily basis. * IMHO, I firmly believe that President Reagan was the best of my generation. I was born in 1960 when Eisenhower was still president. *Kennedy was said to be great and I know my mother cried when he was assassinated but I think that Reagan was awesome.

BTW - I can't answer most of the Reagan questions on yesterday's trivia. But I can tell you that breakfast is my most favorite meal of the day.

I don't have a Bush-Cheney sticker on my car but around here it's dangerous to have any Republican stickers or even Support the Troops stickers on your car. *I would love to show my support with stickers or signs but would have to stay out of Seattle to do it. *

Did anyone hear about the really negative comments that Danny Glover made about President Reagan? *My local radio station said that he had said something that was "reprehensible" but I wasn't sure what the content was. I suppose Jon Alvarez is aware of it.

The one really good thing that I see for her is the reunion with Patty. They were more or less estranged for many years and now Patty seems to be her mother's strength. That is a beautiful thing to see.

Everyone, please remember to sign our condolence and thank you letter for Nancy Reagan.

I know what you mean. During the 1990's I was both teaching and taking ballet classes at a local college campus. A very liberal college campus. I had a huge sign in the back window of my car and I thought - uh oh - better say goodbye to the car. Every day when I parked my car in the huge college lot I really didn't think I would find the car in one piece when I returned.

But, every day - there it was unharmed.

I actually went further than that. In the classes in which I was "taking" rather than teaching, I wore a huge Republican Convention t-shirt (I worked as a volunteer when the convention was in San Diego) over my leotard. You couldn't miss it - the shirt was huge and that writing was all acoss the shirt.

I did have a couple of students who muttered things at me. But, but, but....I had many more students who came up to me very quietly and whispered that they were really conservative republicans and agreed with me. And, would I please not tell anyone about them?

I found this on the one hand very sad that they felt so intimidated, but on the other hand I felt good that we had conservative republicans among the youngsters.

I am too old to be intimidated.

Yes, I did hear about the article written by Patty Davis. It will out on the news stands Friday, as a special edition. Fox had the editor of the magazine on and confirmed this. I didn’t hear how many copies were going to be issued. This will be a collectors item in the next year.

I just came from that brain waste called demounderground and if I had a wife she would be telling me "Harry, your blood pressure!" If I believe these folks Ronald Reagan was the cause of aids, and the most evil man ever.

I admit my own experience with The Great Communicator was much like my experience with my parents. I was a liberal in those days, and although I did not hate Reagan (thought he was a 'nice' man), I 'knew' that he was clueless. I kinda felt the same way about my parents.


Then I hit 30, and I learned a few things about the world and about mom, dad, and Ronald Reagan. I hit a sudden wall that showed me that my parents weren't clueless, and that *my political and personal philosophies were extremely clueless.

About Ronnie, I realized something. He was 100% right and I was 100% wrong. From that day forward, I became, was, and am a conservative.

Ronald Reagan, thank you for serving this nation with far more honor than those who even in your death who vilify you deserve. You showed us a better way than what the elitists want for America. It just took some of us a little longer than others to see that.

The more the media looks at President Reagan the more President Bush reminds us of President Reagan. That can’t be good for the dems. I guess that is why Lurch gave up on his campaign and went into hiding at the DNC head quarters in DC.

Lurch is still running his ads of deception. I just saw one showing a pump jack running, which implies that he will drill but the left knows that it really means that he would pull the plug on those PJs.

They were just talking on Brit Hume about Reagan being a uniter and how Bush said he was going to be and hasn't been...That just drives me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!... .The Dems decided on "day one" that they were going to be as nasty and difficult as they possibly could...there is no way President Bush could have done anything to bring on all this "togetherness"You can only reach out succesfully if someone else reaches out also...and they would die befor they gave an inch on anything...Their goal in life is to keep anything prodictive for this country from happening...and throw as many road blocks in the way as they possibly can...The war in Iraq would be so much farther along if they weren't giving them the idea that the US is not behind our president....Man I need to go get a Rolaid...LOL...A

Top 'O' The day to one and all: We just got back from the UNC hospital where the wife's daughter had her chemo port removed. Everything went just fine and she went to sleep as soon as we got her home. I must say that I was extremely impressed with the UNC Hospital, clean, orderly and efficient.

Things didn't go so well today in the parade float corner. I'm thinking that if people would do what they said they'd do and forget about other people's jobs, things would be a lot easier on my nerves. >Don Knotts twitch here<

It was 85 and humid today. You see, we get our summer all at one time. (I guess) I'd love to see it just be nice and dry and about 75 degrees (or even 5 degrees cooler).

One of my favorite Reagan quotes I had printed in our newsletter: Politics is said to be the second oldest profession. I think it bears a close resemblance to the first.

I think the reason the Reagans stayed married and in love for so many years was because their first consideration was each other. I don't think that the children even came first. This could have caused some of the trouble the kids went through. Perhaps a feeling of exclusion.

I read a biography about John Charles Fremont and Jessie Benton. They only had one daughter that lived and she said she'd never marry because she didn't want to be hurt the way her mother was when Fremont went on his exploring expeditions. They worked on everything together when he'd come back, from proofing his journal to drawing maps. A little historical note for those who might not know it: John C. Fremont was the first Republican candidate for president and you can believe Jessie was his most ardent campaigner.

They still don't know what causes it or how to prevent it. There was a rumor going around at one time about alumminum cookware, but that turned out to be a false lead. It can hit anyone, including these liberals who mock and scoff at Charleton Heston and Ronald Reagan. If I were superstitious I would say that they are calling this curse upon their own heads with thier vitriol. But I'm not like that. I wouldn't wish this even upon them, as evil as they are.As I've said, this may change a lot of Americans when it comes to voting in November. Let's pray it turns the tide.

JFTR, I've had a Bush-Cheney 2004 sticker, and a Support The President and Our Troops sticker on my car since 2003. I also added the W 04 oval bumper sticker to my front bumper. Y'know, M-L, honesty and truth go a long way with us common folks. That was President Reagan's biggest asset in 1984, and I trust it will also be an asset for President Bush. Let 'em spew their vitriol. It's just like the proverbial digging your own hole deeper and deeper and deeper... People know the truth when they hear it. They also know lies when they hear them.
