http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hat.gif Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day originated in the aftermath of the Civil War, during which more American soldiers died than in any other war before or since. *It has become a day on which the dead of all wars, and the dead generally, are remembered in special programs held in cemeteries, churches, and other public meeting places. *In 1971, Congress designated the last Monday in May as the national Memorial Day holiday.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. *After the Civil War, grieving citizens around the nation began holding memorial ceremonies, decorating the graves of Civil War soldiers with flags and tributes. *Waterloo, New York, is officially considered the "birthplace" of Memorial Day because it was the first to make the practice of honoring the Civil War dead a citywide event when it held its first Decoration Day in 1866.

General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the veterans' group the Grand Army of the Republic, made a formal proclamation designating May 30, 1868, as a day of remembrance of the nation's war dead. *The holiday was originally intended to honor the Civil War dead. *Unfortunately, that was not the last conflict that American soldiers lost their lives in, and after World War I, the holiday's purpose was expanded to include all Americans lost to war.

Popular tourist attractions on Memorial Day include:
*The Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC
*Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC
The General John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro, IL
The Colonel Eli Lilly Civil War Museum in Indianapolis, IN. *

If you can't get to a historical site in person, many have Web sites that offer "virtual tours" as well as a chance to learn about history. *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hat.gif

Other popular ways to celebrate Memorial Day include visiting your local veteran's cemetery to lay flowers on a grave, or to visit a veterans hospital or VA association and talk to the veterans there. *The tradition of wearing poppies in honor of America's war dead takes its origin from the poem "In Flanders Fields."

http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/usflag22.gif In Flanders Fields

written in 1915 by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Flanders, in the north of France, was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the World War I. *One of the few things said to have survived the bloodshed was the poppy. *John McCrea, a Canadian doctor serving on the battlefield, wrote this poem after treating the battle wounded and burying the dead. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/usflag22.gif

Okay...I was all set to post in "Memorial Sunday" and it was locked. *Did I miss what that means?

Anyway, I'm getting ready to hit the hay and I thought "I'll just check to see if anybody has been hanging close to home like me today." * Sure 'nuff, lots of you have been staying home - must be the gas prices!!!

pRIM and Flowerpower, I'm so glad to hear that someone else has BIRDS. *Many times I have wished for a closed in porch to let my two have some freedom, but for now the best I can do is take them out of their (very nice) cages right after their breakfast and let them play on their play stands for several hours each day. *They are both clipped, but they can still glide and that's how the Amazon "attacked" me this morning. *Both of my birds are pretty young. *Sundance (Senegal) is 2 1/2 yrs and I raised him from a baby; Choo Choo (Amazon) is just a year old and I've had her since she was 6 months. *I'm looking forward to some private posts if you guys want to compare notes or brag a little. *

Also, I seem to be the only Sagittarius in the bunch. *Is that so? *Anybody else?

I'm so glad Terri tied a can to that http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/jacka.gif 's tail - Now, that's what I call a Kibosh!!! *You could tell he was only trying to start trouble with that smarmy, condescending attitude. *After his post about grad school, that cleared it all up for me. *Whatever independent thought he ever had was removed by his brainwashing in college.

So, I'm off to bed. *I'm looking forward to tomorrow. *My brother is a vet so I hope to spend some time with him.

'Nite all.

Good morning all.

OR, I’m half Sagittarius and half Scorpio. Luckily I have a huge head for the two personality traits to share. As a child they battled for power but over the years they have allied themselves against the rest of the cosmic influences.

I’m also some what of a bird person. My brother and I raised several foundling baby birds and set them free when they were grown. My wife has done the same. Once you are identified as a bird rescuer the whole neighborhood brings you baby birds to care for. I remember one that we had in San Antonio; A ring necked Dove that the girls named Pippy. Once it was grown we put it out in the back yard and it stayed there for about a month. It would sit around the back door and if anyone went out it would fly onto their head or get on the ground at their feet and go in circles. Then one day when we went out she was talking to a punk male dove. We told her that they could live around the house as long as they wanted the best bird food but he insisted on a human free relationship. She came back a few times and the girls thought that every dove they saw was her. We also raised a Blue Jay there but it never acted very friendly and was gone the second we opened the cage. A Mocking Bird that the wife took from a cat was grateful and never mocked us.

RIM, was Terri mean to a liberal trouble maker and I missed it?

Good Morning All: Stormy has already let everyone know that I am also an Aries - what she didn't let out, was that I married an Aries. A word to the wise, don't mess with this household http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The Memorial Day coverage on FOX is quite good, they even showed a cemetary in Italy that contains about 8000 American servicemen. A young man put it quite well, "Most people don't realize what these men gave so we may enjoy what we have".

My stepdaughter will be arriving in a little bit to help us share the Ribs and all the other goodies Nell is fixing. It looks as if we are due to get fireworks in the form of thunderstorms, but all of the activities will be inside. Have a great day and be careful if you get on the highways.

Good morning Laurie, Original Rebel, pRIM and GR. Hope you're all well and ready for the Big Day.

I don't think I'm up to the big day today. Standing out in a http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lightning.gif storm in an open cemetery just doesn't sound like a rational thing to do. Yesterday, Colin and I managed to get all the graves cleaned up and decorated. I was sure glad he was with me. He cut all the sod around the markers while I scraped lichens and raked. The town cemetery is full of jack pine so every year there's a lot of debris on the plots, pine cones, branches and lots of dead needles. There's great grampa, up to his ears in pinecones!! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

There's one http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lightning.gif storm after another passing through, interspersed with about 2 minutes of sun. All in all, a very dreary day. Very possibly a day for >gasp!< SEWING!!

It's another gloriously beautiful day here - ho hum.

Good Morning to Everyone!

The beaches and parks will be filled today with residents and tourists from all over the world. So, smart residents will avoid those places.

I have raised a number of baby birds. One was a mockingbird that when it was grown and flying well I set free. Subsequently, whenever I was out hanging the laundry (yes, some of us still do that) it would come and visit me. Did that for several years. To this day we are in the center of a mockingbird's territory and I like to think that it's the descendant of the bird I raised.

The cat was not pleased by the entire episode.

For me, chores today as usual. A long walk and ballet class for my exercise. Supper will be all the stuff we brought home from the restaurant yesterday that we couldn't finish.

I have a huge entry I have to make in our catalogue database of a vhs/dvd library - that should take me a couple of hours. We have one of the largest dance libraries (privately held) in the country - and a database to match. My husband (a retired electrical engineer) is deep into a project of putting the vhs onto dvd. For dance it has to be especially high quality work.

Well, that's it - nothing very exciting.

Enjoy the day all. Prayers for the safety of our military all around the world. May the good Lord keep them safe and bring them home very soon.

Happy Memorial Day to all!

I'm getting a late start this morning. *I'm just getting going, and Charie is ready for a http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sleepy.gif !

There was a really good program on History channel last night about the dedication of the WWII Monument, interspersed with the history of that era. *I had missed seeing the actual dedication on Saturday. *It was heartwarming to see so many vets able to be there and finally get the recognition they so richly deserve. *They really ARE the "greatest generation" this nation has known, and I hope that this recognition inspires the current "doubters". * *Seeing the program on the mall made me homesick for that area. *I can't tell you the number of times we went into the city for the 4th of July celebrations, evening concerts at the Capitol or one of the monuments, or just spent the day walking around seeing all there is to see there. *It is truly an inspiring city!

It's been a long time since I had a domestic bird probably because we've had cats for the past 25 years. *My last up-close bird encounter was when one of my cats caught a hummingbird which I was able to rescue unharmed. *The poor little thing was scared motionless from his ordeal with Jack (the cat), and he laid on his back in my hand for a few moments while I examined him for injuries. *When I touched his little feet, he flew away -- must've been ticklish! *Anyway, I've always considered that to be a really special experience -- holding a hummingbird in my hand. *We let Jack know in no uncertain terms that hummingbirds are not fair game, and that he needed to stick with snakes and mice. *Which, to our knowledge anyway, he did. *

I looked, but somehow missed the row out in the threads yesterday. *It was late and I was half asleep. *Personally I don't mind a little honest, respectfully conducted debate, but the name calling gets really old really fast. *

We don't have any big plans for the day because my husband is on call, and likely to be called in to the hospital. *We *had planned on going for a bike ride and picnic in the canyon until we realized he may not even be around. *So I guess it'll be more yard work and ribs left over from yesterday.

Everybody have a great day!

I'm still buzzing with delight that Rolling Thunder endorsed our President, Way to go, My Brothers!

I did a gig at a retirement complex Saturday night. As a tribute to the WW2 Vets, I sang a medley of 3 songs..The White Cliffs of Dover, We'll Meet Again, and I'll Be Seeing You. A contingent of old ladies got mad at me because they couldn't "line Dance" to it. I'm probably going to catch hell from the agent. It seems that there are some people who can't think beyond "The Chicken Dance" or the "Electric Slide". I saw some "Kerry" bumper stickers in the parking lot. Go Figure. Oh well, I can always come to the forum for my daily dose of sanity.

I love the post about Arlington National Cemetery. Did you know that the mansion (Arlington House) was the home of Robert E. Lee? Lincoln had asked Lee to lead the Union Forces, but Lee couldn't take arms against his home state of Virginia. Lincoln was so incensed by Lee's refusal that he directed that the Union War dead be buried in Lee's front yard, thus reminding the Lee family every day of Lee's refusal. Pretty soon the house became unlivable with all the graves around it and the Lee family moved out. There were 620,000 casualties in the War Between The States. Memrial Day was originally founded for them. Sadly, some of the forces at work that caused the greatest crisis of our country are still brewing today. May G*d give us strenth to overcome!

I haven't heard "Flanders Fields" since the fourth grade. Do you think any kids nowadays even know about Flanders Feilds , or even WW1, for that matter?

One of my little students was talking about helicopters. He said ,"Miss Mary-Lou, my Dad and I were able to go up in a helicopter that went all the way back to...what was the name of that war that we lost?" I triet to hide what I felt inside. I said "Alex, that helicopter was from the War in Vietnam. And We didn't lose the war. Our soldiers WON every battle in that war. It was the newspapers and the TV and the college students that protested that lost that war. It was people like John Kerry who undermined the morale of the men who were still over there that lost that war." To which, the plucky eight year old said "And that GUY"S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif"
Out of the mouths of babes, I guess.

I watched the dedication of the WW2 monument yesterday. They were showing kerry as he made his appearance. I did NOTICE that not many were extending their hands to shake his.

Mary Lou I also heard a story about Lee-Custis mansion today. He was in war..and the taxes were not paid so the union took his mansion and grounds to bury the Union dead so it was meant to be and was a slap in the face of Gen Lee.
They say Mrs Lee saved many of their things by packing them on a train. Its a sad story as is all other wars.

Quote[/b] ]…Most of us would put our families before our careers. Most of us wouldn't deliberately accept a job in a war zone. You may believe that soldiers have some gene that makes them different from the rest of us, but research shows that more than 80 percent of the people who join the military actively seek non-combat positions. That suggests they're like the rest of us. They have no desire to get shot at. They want to come home to their families at night. …

The Arlington House, I believe was originally called the Lee-Custis Mansion. It belonged not only to the Lee family but to the Custis family. This was the family (by marriange - she was originally a Danridge) of Martha Custis Washington. Her family was far more wealthy and well known than the Washington's.

Ipara:

I am going to try to answer you as the least (by a country mile) of the technical people in my house - I am a dancer and we only count to 8 (or four twice on bad days). But here goes.

The problem is that VHS degrades after about 20 years and our library is quite rare and precious. So, that's the necessity for us to convert to DVD.

I believe I remember my husband saying (he's not home at the minute - attending a board of directors meeting at the neighborhood Starbucks) that each side of a DVD holds about 55 minutes. He buys some that record on both sides. I believe he also buys them online in bulk (I am not sure how much bulk - but not two or three at a time.)

He has three recorders and players all the same exact manufacturer - one recorder/player sits connected to the computer and the others are connected to the TV (I think - LOL).

He found that he couldn't use our regular desk top computer for this. You might be able to use it for normal DVD conversion but for dance it had to be absolutely top quality since any "blip" would interrupt a pirouette, grand jeté. etc. So, he bought a computer that is dedicated to this task exclusively. He had to turn off all - ALL - extraneous activity on the computer - such as the clock. Even the clock would record a "blip" on the DVD. So, that computer does nothing but record DVD.

If you are interested in any exacting technical stuff further than what my poor brain has remembered, please let me know and I will ask him for specific technical information.

Original Rebel, I am saggitrius, 11/24. Every few years it falls on Thanksgiving, and the Grandkidsw think it's because of me that they're suppose to be thankful. I straightened them out tho.

Watched the Memorial Day show on 13 last night. It had some beautiful moments, except I ccould have done without Ossie Davis. When they honored all the forces, it was great., and the end with all singing GOD BLESS AMERICA

Speaking of memorials and days there of; would it cruel to remember the liberals who have fallen a foul of Terri on the forum?

Guess where I saw Lurch laying something on the ground? That’s right, the Vietnam Memorial. I couldn’t see what he was putting on the ground but it didn’t appear to be very important to him. It may have been more of his medals, a letter from a dying Vet, or something from the bottom of his shoe. It was hard to tell from his expression.

I guess you have seen that the Saudi special forces let the terrorists go free.

http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/red_eyes.gif Afternoon all!

I've goofed off all day. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif Only worked three hours (didn't have to go in, but I promised I would for a couple of hours) and then puttered around, took a http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/bedtime2.gif and listened to http://smilies.sofrayt.com/fsc/headphones.gif and puttered some more. It was great. http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/w/thumbs.gif

I've really enjoyed reading all the Memorial Day stuff. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yes.gif It has always been an important day, but I think this year it just seems more poignant. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/usflag22.gif

Looks like the per barrel cost of oil is going to go back up over $40. Seems as if the rise in cost is due to all the people that deal in oil are afraid there will be a shortage. Since they are all afraid, we have to pay more - doesn't make much sense, but I don't deal in oil. Just happy with the mileage I get with my little diesel http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Been laying around most of the afternoon, digesting all those ribs, slaw and baked beans. Didn't eat enough to hurt myself, but I did eat enough to get real lazy http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rotflo.gif

Have a great day and I'll see you later.

Hello everyone!

Just before my grandfather passed away, he had told me that we were related to Admiral William Sowden Sims. *So I have been doing research to see how we are related to him. *As I was looking online, I found this quote from him:

Quote[/b] ]In such an hour as that with which we are now confronted, when so much depends upon the individual efforts, our hearts swell with pride as we learn of the thousands of America's best, staunch and true men who are so willingly forgetting their own personal welfare
and linking their lives and all that they are with the cause of
liberty and justice, which is so dear to the hearts of the American people. *All honor to those who are giving themselves as such willing sacrifices, and may God grant that their efforts may be speedily rewarded by a world condition which will make them realize that their efforts have accomplished the desired result, and that the world is better and happier because of them.

[signed] Wm. S. Sims

Here is one from Roosevelt:

Quote[/b] ]"I wish all success to 'The Defenders of Democracy.' *The men who are in this war on the part of the United States are doing the one vitally important work which it is possible for Americans to do at this time. *Nothing else counts now excepting that we fight this war to a finish. *Those men are thrice fortunate who are given the chance to serve under arms at the front. *They are not only rendering the one essential service to this country and to mankind, but they are also earning honor as it cannot otherwise be earned by any men of our generation. *As for the rest of us, our task is
to back them up in every way possible."

[signed]Theodore Roosevelt

AMEN to that! *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif

We are still so happy that we got a phone call from Baghdad. *My husband's father is safe, and for that we are grateful. *We need to keep our troops in prayer. *Today is a day to be with friends and family, and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. *

Part Three was new, so we watched it first, and then backed up to watch the other two. Man oh man! I don't think Peter Jackson meant it to be an allegory to the present day but I found myself finding relevance in every scene. I read the books 35 years ago so it felt brand new but had a hint of familiarity. It was like seeing the story with new eyes after what we have been through for the last 3 years. Saurimon reminded me of Bin Laden with his scraggy beard and his evil eyes! Of course when Tolkein wrote LOTR, Bin Laden was just a little kid wailing away in some Madrassa in Saudi Arabia, so no real connection. I especially liked it when the bald eagles came swooping out of the sky to save Frodo & Sam. Way cool. I KNOW I"M NOT SUPPOSED TO READ INTO THE MOVIE but who *cares! It was very cathartic and the good guys won. It's nice to have the good guys win once in a while, isn't it?

I'm http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dead.gif http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dead.gif http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dead.gif I tell you! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dead.gif We sewed and cut out frock coat parts from 12:00 until 10:15. Is there any political news today? Good. I don't want to hear any anyhow.

It was http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cloud.gif ing and http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/lightning.gif so much off and on today that I didn't even look for a memorial service this morning. We even had a beautiful rainbow because of all the goofy weather, though.

I am going to take a quick peak in the forum and look up Morpheus and see if he's ready.
