The trivia question is a little tricky ~ The answer is probably Ernest Rutherford, in 1919.
However:

"The first person to propose that matter was made
of atoms, and then write it down, was a Greek philosopher
named Democritus. But he had no experimental proof of his
notion. Then, a number of scientists, starting probably with Newton in
the late 1600s, proposed a corpuscular, or atomic, model. But it
wasn't until the late 1700s/early 1800s that John Dalton proposed
that all matter was made of atoms and actually used it to explain
a bunch of experiments that had been done on gases, and to calculate
atomic weights of elements. However, he still hadn't PROVED that
atoms existed...he just showed that the atomic concept was useful
and helped explain a lot of data. Probably the best direct probe
of the atom was first done by Rutherford and his student, C.T.R. Wilson,
who invented the cloud chamber and used it to show that when thin
gold foil is bombarded by helium nuclei (alpha particles), the particles
are occasionally deflected by a very large angle, but usually pass
straight through. This gave rise to the realization that the gold
was composed of atoms, with a tiny nucleus at the middle which
could occasionally collide with an alpha particle and send it flying."

Did anyone see the video clip of "Patty http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/withstupid.gif Murray(sp) speaking at a high school gathering ~ expounding on the virtues of OBL? The Dems are getting a taste of their own medicine. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rotflo.gif

It's back to brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr cold around here today with temperatures in the 20's and swirling wind. Cross dressers? ummmmmm...nah...I'm not gonna ask! LOL

Mark, I got my RNC card in the mail yesterday too. I think it's going back today in return mail with a note "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif .....just had to get my http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/fire.gif in for today!

RIM....I saw Murray the Mouth in her HS speech last night.....and then the insufferable mini mouths trying to defend her sleeze. It is fairly funny though watching them chase their tail.

Which reminds me.....did you all see the BOR segment with the Mexican trying to blame the US for Mexico's problem? She was motor mouth extraordinaire spewing lies and blame everywhere but where it belonged. BOR apologized to the audience for subjecting them to her vile sputum.....and then cut her mike. Oh...justice....swee t justice.

I'll be out most of today....then hockey game....then dessert with friends. I'll hop in when I can in between "doings". Hope you all have a fabulamundo Friday!

lpara....is today your sister's surgery? Please let us know.

WELCOME new friends to http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gopusa.gif Come on in! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif

One more thing.....

Could someone explain to me why high muck-de-mucks from North Korea are going to meet with Bill Richardson (the new Governor of NM and former Klintoon lackey) about "policy"? The rumors I hear are that Powell knows and approves(?) of this? ahhhhh...more "bi-partisan" touchy feely good stuff for the dems from our compassionate heart? Morning All: Bill O'Reilly rocks. From the look on her face she could still hear what was going on after he cut her mike off. I knew we were the bad guys, but I didn't know we were responsible for the corruption in Mexico.

HELP: I caught the tail end of something on FOX this morning - sounded as if Pelosi is moving to get the Mexican ID recognized in the US - if so I'm sure shes crazy and wants to destroy the US.

Got bunches to do today - no jewelry show and not as much fun, but its got to be done. I'll see you later.

There's lots of news this morning in addition to what is posted and linked to above. Here's a couple of headlines.

7,000 more Marines got orders for the Gulf yesterday and there is worry that Iraq may have bomb jamming weapons.

Illinois Governor Ryan may be going to commute a lot of death row sentences as he leaves office. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sarcasm.gif

RIM, we'll be waiting for that photo of Mr. RIM's cross dressers. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin2.gif

Yes, Patty Murray said all those things in support of bin Laden and now she says it's being misinterpreted. Poor Patty. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nopityA.gif

Laurie, where is your sister having this surgery? *I guess she isn't close enough for you to visit her. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *She has our prayers too and so do you. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/grouphug.gif

I did see both the motormouth woman who must have taken lessons from the Iraqis and Colmes http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/melt.gif down. He was funny. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laff.gif

About Richardson, I understand that NK asked to speak with him and that he cleared it through the State Department, unlike Clinton and Carter do things. As long as he sticks to current US policy I don't think that's terribly unusual. Maybe they think he has the authority to make a deal. Wrong!

Good Afternoon All: Laurie and Bob, glad to hear things are working out the way you wanted. Keep us up to date.

North Korea is one arrogant country - saying that if the UN places sanctions on them it would be a declaration of war. What are they going to do, take on the whole world. Sounds like a lot of posturing to me. They may bluff SK or Japan, but the rest of the world - I think not.

Since I'm running late, as usual, I guess I had better stop and take care of the wife and feed the dogs. See you later.

GOOD AFTERNOON ALL!!!!

I just got the best message I could have this day! My dad, as you all know (or most of you, due to my talking about him) has been through a lot the past year, really, the past few). Well, the latest is that his soon to be ex-wife (trust me, this was legal in man's eyes only), had filed a protective order against him, which is like a restraining order, but she was also wanting things like spousal support (even though she worked and made as much money as he did), and use of one vehicle with him still paying the bills for it.

Well, it went to court today, and the order was thrown out! The judge ruled (after some Matlockesque questioning, from what I can gather) that she must not have been too afraid of him, seeing as how she never left the house when he came in, and she left her daughters there alone with him and other things. She was denied everything.

I just thought I'd share that bit of good news with you all. I feel God has brought him back to us, away from her, and God once again proved His blessings today. (In that county, it is not uncommon for the woman to get everything, no matter if she was abused or not).

The weather was beautiful today. Actually got in the high 70s. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif But, like RIM said, it shall be colder next week.

Hi Bobby. Glad to see you here, but know that you couldn't possibly be dressed well without that all-important "fashion statement" file you decided to put back. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Here is a joke for all of you, but especially for Saberific. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Got it in my e-mail today from my dad, who is also a bit upset about illegal immigration.

No FLg....the punchline should be that Mexico just decided not to rebuild at all and just send the 100 Mexicans left in the country to Sarasota! LOL

HI All! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wavey.gif SO much good news today from ya'll! Laurie.....SOOOOO glad to hear that things went well with your sister! I'm so glad! And BOB! It's so great to see you! I'm happy to hear that your wife is home and recovering. We've all been thinking about you. And ANGELUS! Great news for you too! I'm hoping that your new found relationship with your father can continue to grow and be positive!

Had a wonderful time....natch....at the jewelry show. It's so much fun to wander through all the baubles and beads and buy way too much, of course, with the excuse that it's for the store. I find that when I see something I like, I buy one for me....one for the store...one for me....one for the store! LOL

Anyway, I'm heading out fairly soon for the next event.....the roller hockey game. UGH on this one though. My son is playing against a team that can only be described as filthy dirty. I can start worrying now about him getting out of that game without any blood on the outside of his veins!

Hope you all have a grand Friday night!

Evening All! *Special hellos to Bob. *Glad you were able to make it back and that your wife is doing well at home! *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif *Hope that continues! *Thank you everyone again for your prayers and thoughtful words. *Relief is SUCH a great feeling!

Glad to hear of your good news too, Angelus. *Hope Jakob continues to do well with the therapy, too, FLguy! *He is SUCH a cutie! * http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *Good joke too! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif *I read it to my husband he http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laff.gif 'd too!

I haven't heard about Shaq ~~ http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/doh.gif to him!

What did make me feel bad tonight when I heard it on the 6 pm news on FNC with Tony Snow~~the two pilots who accidentally killed the Canadians in Afghanistan are being prosecuted for manslaughter. *It was a mistake and a TERRIBLE one, but it seems to me that they certainly did not kill these Canadians on purpose and it was a terrible accident that the military should be standing behind them. *What does this do for the morale of the rest of the military if they know the higher uppers won't back them up if they make a mistake which is bound to happen again. *Also, now that they know they will be prosecuted, pilots will hesitate too long and possibly get killed themselves. *This really bothers me because it looks like the higher uppers are more concerned with keeping relations with a country who doesn't seem to be helping us much anyway, rather than taking care of their own. *Again, loss of life is so devastating. *I truly empathize with anyone who has lost a loved one, but I don't believe in sacrificing our own for diplomatic reasons.

I also think that since NK has told the US if they sanction NK it will be wwIII~~then we should immediately sanction NK. *I am sick and tired of being pushed around by dictators (who have bad hair) . *Reckon the NK dictator is related to Traficant?

Well, enough letting loose. *Hope you all have a great night! *Hope all sonny #2's blood stays in his veins! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrinangelA.gif

Good Evening from the land of the US Military - NC. About all the local stations have carried for the past two days is, who is deploying where. We live about 20 minutes from Seymour Johnson AFB, one hour from Camp LeJuene and one hour from Fort Bragg. LeJuene and Bragg already have personnel in SW Asia and are sending a lot more. Seymour Johnson AFB is the home of the 4th Fighter Wing who fly the F-15 Strike Eagles and were some of the first planes over Bagdad in 1991. The last time we lost two planes - two crewmen were killed and two were captured, but released after the surrender. They are scheduled to leave in the next few days. Businesses in Goldsboro, Fayetteville and Jacksonville get hit quite hard when so many service personnel, deploy. I was talking to one of the pilots, yesterday, and he was dissappointed that he would not be going - he is still in training.

Sounds like the muslims really got a big catch when they got Shaq. Big in size and money. Of course it is said that their mission is to spread over the earth and convert people to Islam - looks like they are succeeding.

Watched Peter Jennings tonite and he had an interview with two students from the arab world - they both said that after they were questioned by the INS that they had decided to leave the US as soon as they got their degrees. One came from France and said he never felt French, but when he got to the US he felt at home immediately, but now he is dissappointed with the US. At least we have promises from two of them to leave or will they be like our esteemed movie stars and have a change of heart.

Have a great evening.

Der Alte, I think NK is posturing and they will shake us down for whatever they can get. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

Angelus, I'm glad to hear that you got such good family news. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Floridaguy, what good news about Jakob. I've heard that some people get wonderful results from diet changes. I sure hope it continues to work for him. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/grouphug.gif
