Congress Ignored Reports of Prisoner Abuse

Democrats howling for the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for not informing them of reports of prisoner abuse in Baghdad are ignoring the fact that concerned parents of an accused soldier informed 16 members of Congress - top Democrats such as Senators Hillary Clinton, Edward Kennedy and John D. Rockefeller - and the governor of Virginia of the burgeoing scandal as far back as February 26th of this year.
None of these people acted to disclose the detailed information contained in the letters.

While the media has created a firestorm about the abuse allegations at Abu Ghraib prison, only one TV network, MSNBC, disclosed the names of the members of Congress when one of the letter writers, William Lawson, mentioned them during a telephone interview.

As a resident of Minnesota, I'm ashamed and embarrassed (but not surprised) that one of my Senators (Dayton) is as stained and covered with slime as that which covers other well know hypocrites such as Hillary Clinton, Teddy Kennedy, and Robert Byrd. Shame, Shame, Shame!

And these are the ones who are so "outraged" at the news about the abuse. What a pity most of the world will never know that these members of congress were to "busy" to look into this at the time. I understand that Byrd's office e-mailed the man that he didn't accept letters of less than so many words. Pity, pity, pity.

Quote[/b] ]No further mention of the names was made by MSNBC
Whoever mentioned the names, probably got called out about it. http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/notalk.gif *

Quote[/b] ]Here are the names, all Democrats except for Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, Sgt. Frederick's congressman:

Sens. Kennedy,
Clinton,
Rockefeller,
Jack Reed,
Mark Dayton,
Robert Byrd,
Bill Nelson,
Evan Bayh,
Mark Pryor,
Ben Nelson,
Joseph Lieberman,
Daniel Akaka,
Paul Sarbanes,
Gov. Mark Warner and
Rep. Roscoe Bartlett.

Quote[/b] ]Byrd's office would not even accept the letter e-mailed to him on the grounds it was too long.

Bartlett said he was looking into the matter.

Sarbanes said he had written the the "appropriate officials."

Rockefeller begged off on the grounds that he was barred by privacy rules.

Lieberman is the only one of these members of Congress who has defended Rumsfeld and the world's mission in Iraq.

In fact, Reed and Dayton were nearly abusive in holding the feet of Rumsfeld, Gen. Richard Myers et al. to the fire last week - and here we find that they knew of the abuse allegations months ago.

They could only have been feigning outrage, since they have been long aware of what was going on at Abu Ghraib; the e-mail letters fully alerted the 16 Democrats and Governor Warner of the prisoner abuse accusations.

Quote[/b] ]Moreover the U.S. Central Command told the media of an investigation into abuses on Jan. 16, just days after a report by a whistleblower.

"They told everyone in the world there were allegations of abuse and they were being investigated," Rumsfeld told reporters. On March 20, he added, Central Command "announced not only allegations, but they listed the types of abuses."

Quote[/b] ]Lawson, a 23-year Army veteran, and other relatives of Sgt. Frederick, told those he wrote that they feared he and the other accused MPs were being made scapegoats "to save some general's carrer."

You tell me, was this or was this not a democratic plan to try to have the most negative impact politically upon our President.

I believe things were being taken care of right from the onset of the original internal complaint, as could be seen initially by the *transfer of the female(?)(can you tell?) general in charge of the Brigade.

Am not too familiar with lots of these dems, but what excuse did Clinton and Kennedy come up with when their names were made known? Or hasn't anyone had the intestinal fortitude to ask them?
Think it would be a good idea to have someone ask them this question the next time they are pontificating at some fundraiser.
It probably wasn't a "politically opportune" time to exhibit "outrage" when they first learned of this. Maybe no TV cameras in range!

Hypocrites, one and all - not to mention worthless!

righton, I think that you have hit part of it on the head, but the rest of it is that if they had said anything, it might have been political suicide, because it could have been covered up as a political ploy and denied and buried. they couldn't have that.

what do you expect though from someone that can't remember anything in front of a judge, and someone that can't keep his bulbous red snoot out of the bottle??

ARGH I detest Mark Warner!!! *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Mark Warner is unfortunately the governor of my home state, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and he is a far-far-far left liberal! *He just put through a $1 BILLION dollar budget increase for 2005, and it passed both houses here! http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tearhair.gif

He is out next year (in VA you cannot hold that office back to back) we are already working on getting a strong conservative Republican back in the Governors mansion in Richmond.

ARGH I detest Mark Warner !!

The democratic party has always said they are the party of the working people. We know of course this is a non-truth.
Just goes to show you how much attention they pay to people letters and to the people who put them in office.
I can report that I received a letter from Sen Zell Miller...and not a form letter either, but he is a donkey of a different color.
I have sent email letters to several...never a response except the auto response..I figure it goes in the spam mailbox.

Of course all these fine dimocraps will have an excuse for this. They always do...

Why would any of these spineless jellyfish even want to acknowledge the fact that they knew about this alleged abuse all along? *They obviously were waiting for a politically opportune moment where they could carp on Bush and exert maximum force on the media to make a huge stink about something they colluded to keep quiet about in order to feign outrage when it was finally 'exposed' in the media! *This is so blatantly political it makes my stomach churn... *http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/barf.gif

Every senator on the list isn't worth a bucket of spit, save for Senator Joe Lieberman, whose position and statements supporting the Iraqi war has been consistently pro-Bush policy and pro-Troops. *

Senator Lieberman http://www.gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yelclap.gif should be commended for having the intestinal fortitude to stand up for his convictions on these matters in the face of withering criticism from his own party for his support of Bush's Iraq policies. *

Rush mentioned something on the radio the other morning that I had completely forgotten about.

Does anybody remember a few years ago, the stink that the people made re Maplethorpe's so-called art - Virgin Mary in elephant dung, Crucifix in urine, etc.? The National Endowment of the Arts, I believe, was the grantor for this "art" display

I wonder how many of the dumbdems exhibiting "outrage" at the prison pics were the ones who defended TAXPAYER monies being spent for this garbage when Americans were complaining?

Did they show the same disgust when this "art" was displayed? NOT! If it's anti-Christian, it's OK, I guess.

Dung and urine is what they have been wallowing in for so long, they feel right at home.
