Thank you to those in uniform who have given so much for this country that we all love, and reflection on what we have lost and what we have gained. This year our thanks go also to the Firemen and Policemen who died trying to save the victims of the World Trade Center, to the heroes of Flight 93, and to all the innocent victims who died. We will always remember.

Lets enjoy our families, remember those who are gone, and remember to pray for those who are fighting for our country and our way of life.

Father Denis Edward O'Brien USMC

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us the Freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us Freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the Freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, who serves beneath the Flag,
who salutes the Flag,
whose coffin is draped by the Flag,
who allows the protester to burn the Flag.
It is the soldier, not the politician,
who has given his blood, his body, his life,
who has given us these FREEDOMS.

The flame that burns the brightest
Is the light of the eternal human spirit
A beacon of Love, Justice and Peace
That will never be extinguished.

It will triumph over the forces of darkness
And illuminate for the whole world
The true path to freedom
Through goodness, hope and love.

In Memory of A Veteran
http://home.earthlink.net/~thillhousesprint/gopusa/aknauta_egausmc.gif
General Lewis B. (Chesty) Puller

Puller, Lewis Burwell (26 June 1898-11 Oct. 1971), Marine Corps officer, was born in West Point, Virginia, the son of Matthew Puller, a grocer, and Martha Leigh. Puller received a public education and, interested in military history, attended the Virginia Military Institute in 1917.

Impatient to fight in World War I, he joined the Marine Corps the following year but was retained as an instructor at Parris Island, South Carolina.
In 1919 Puller graduated from the Officers' Training School and received a second lieutenant's commission, but postwar cutbacks forced him onto the inactive reserve list.
Determined to serve, he immediately rejoined the marines as a corporal and shipped off to Haiti to serve with the gendarmerie, a joint U.S.-Haitian constabulary that served according to American policy at the time to intervene on behalf of Caribbean regimes to restore order as necessary.

Puller, as an acting lieutenant, distinguished himself in several skirmishes with Caco insurgents and received a medal from the Hatian government.
He returned to the United States in 1924, advanced to second lieutenant, and two years later attended the Naval Aviators' School at Pensacola, Florida. He failed to win his wings and subsequently served two years at the Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor.
In December 1928 Puller joined the marine expeditionary brigade in Nicaragua.

Between 1928 and 1933 Puller served as a captain in the Nicaraguan Guardia Nacional. He clashed repeatedly and successfully with rebels under Augusto Sandino and acquired his first two Navy Crosses.
Puller interrupted these activities briefly in 1931 to attend the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, then returned to Nicaragua for more fighting.
In January 1933 he sailed for Beijing (Peking), China, to head a mounted marine detachment, the so-called &quot;Horse Marines,&quot; guarding the American legation.

Puller then transferred to the cruiser Augusta under Captain Chester W. Nimitz in September 1934 to commmand the marine detachment.
In June 1936 he returned to the United States and taught three years at the Basic School, Philadelphia Navy Yard.
He married Virginia Montague Evans in 1937; they had three children.
Puller then rejoined the Augusta in September 1939 before transferring to the Fourth Marines at Shanghai, China, in May 1940.

Puller rose to major in August 1941 and was assigned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he took charge of the First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division. His tour in China had placed him in close proximity to Japanese forces, whom he observed closely and came to respect for their discipline and endurance.

Anticipating what might follow, he was one of the first marine officers to train his men in jungle fighting and camouflage techniques.

Combat in the Pacific theater in World War II reinforced Puller's reputation as an aggressive and hard-hitting infantry officer.

Commencing in September 1942, his Seventh Marines reinforced the First Marine Division on Guadalcanal and fought in the August 24-25 defense of Henderson Field. For three crucial hours Puller's half-battalion withstood an entire Japanese regiment at night, killing 1,400 Japanese and losing only 70 Americans. Throughout the engagement, Puller actively moved down the line, encouraging his men, and his tenacious defense won him a third Navy Cross.

The Seventh Marines subsequently fought on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, where on 16 January 1944 they overcame fanatical resistance, stormed fortified positions, and won Puller a fourth Navy Cross.

He next transferred to the First Marines in February 1944 and led them into battle at Peleliu in September 1944.
Two months later Puller was recalled to the United States to train recruits at Camp LeJeune. Promoted to colonel, he then assumed command of the Eighth Marine Reserve District at New Orleans in 1946 and two years later headed the marine detachment at Pearl Harbor.

With the onset of the Korean War, Puller was reassigned to combat duty. In August 1950 he again commanded the First Marines and
fought at the decisive Inchon landings in September. By this maneuver, General Douglas MacArthur virtually cut off North Korean
forces besieging Pusan and forced their immediate withdrawal.

The marines next took Seoul after savage house-to-house fighting and pursued the Communists northward. In December 1950 the First Marine Division, suddenly cut off and surrounded by large numbers of Chinese at Chosin Reservoir, commenced their legendary withdrawal.
Puller's First Marine clung to the village of Koto-ri against tremendous odds, enabling the Fifth and Seventh Marines to fight
their way to Hungham and safety. Puller's steady conduct resulted in his fifth and final Navy Cross.
He was promoted to brigadier general in January 1951 and served as assistant commander to the First Marine Division under General Oliver O. Smith.

In May 1951 Puller returned stateside to assume control of the Third Marine Brigade at Camp Pendleton. He rose to major general
in September 1953 and the following year became head of the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. Puller was also serving as deputy camp commander when he suffered a mild stroke in January 1955.

He retired that November a lieutenant general. In 1956 Sergeant Matthew McKeon was tried and found responsible for the death
of six recruits while on a nighttime training march in a swamp.

Puller gained some notoriety by coming out of retirement to testify on McKeon's behalf, and reiterated his long-held position that
tough discipline and realistic training were essential to all marines. He died at his home in Hampton, Virginia.

Puller was one of the most decorated and colorful officers in the Marine Corps. Jut-jawed and salty-tongued, with a bulldog
demeanor, he earned the moniker &quot;Chesty&quot; because he always walked with his barrel chest conspicuously thrown out. He was a fierce, demanding, and vocal proponent of physical fitness, yet consistently
displayed a compassionate concern for the men under his control.
When his son, Lewis B. Puller, Jr., lost a leg to a land mine in Vietnam, the old general wept by his bedside. Aggressive,
inured to hardship, and a harsh taskmaster, Puller epitomized the traditions of his service and was an icon to a generation
of marines. His renown was such that the Marine Corps commandant, 43 generals, and 1,500 former and active duty marines attended his funeral.

Thanks Terri - I did have a very nice day.

Aknauta - I'm glad you posted Puller's Bio. He was a very good man. Coming from a Marine Corps family (dad and both brothers), it's nice to see him honored.

Happy Memorial Day, and thanks to all who have given of themselves and of their families for our freedom.

ps. Don't know why I'm up - I woke up at 3:30 am, and can't get back to sleep! I went to sleep late, too, because of my noise neighbors!

<span style='color:red'>HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY EVERYONE!!</span>
[color=hunter]Here's the poem we printed in our church bulletin yesterday:

No, Freedom Isn't Free
(Author Unknown)

I watched the flag pass by one day., it fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform, so young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert, he'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil? *How many mother's tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down? *How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? *No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night, when everything was still. *I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times that taps had meant &quot;Amen.&quot;
When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children, of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands with interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington. *No freedom isn't free.

Hope everyone is having a good day with family and friends.
I spent 4 hours in a friend's pool and I'm paying for it already!! *One big red tomato!!http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif

I'm sorry that I'm so late coming here. *I had all sort of plans for things for your Memorial Day but alas, two doctors appointments and other things kept me hopping. *I'm home now from a very long executive meeting which was supposed to be a short one and now here's my offering...

Since I live in the city where Col. John McCrae was born and grew up, I thought it fitting to post a little bit about him.

John McCrae was born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada on St. Andrew's Day, November 30, 1872 and his birthplace is now a very interesting museum in this city. *He *is remembered as one of Guelph's most famous sons.

McCrae was more than a poet, and was in fact a doctor, soldier, author and artist. *His poem, &quot;In Flanders Fields&quot; is one of the most famous poems used to commemorate the endings of the modern wars in which Canada had a part. *These include the Boer War, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and many peace missions since.

It was in the city of Guelph that he spent his entire childhood, youth and much of his early manhood attending Guelph Collegiate Institute. *He was a member of the Highland Cadet Corps (http://www.museum.guelph.on .ca/mccraecadet.htm) which was affiliated with the high school and *at the age of 15, McCrae became a bugler in the local militia regiment of artillery commanded by his father, David (http://www.museum.guelph.on .ca/mccraedavid.htm).

Colonel McCrae's life was largely one of military and humanitarian service to his fellow man and much can be learned from soldier who cared for people.</span></span>

* * * * * * * In Flanders fields the poppies blow
* * * * * * * Between the Crosses, row on row,
* * * * * * * That mark our place; and in the sky
* * * * * * * The larks, still bravely singing, fly
* * * * * * * Scarce heard amid the guns below.

* * * * * * * We are the Dead. Short days ago
* * * * * * * We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
* * * * * * * Loved and were loved, and now we lie
* * * * * * * In Flanders fields.

* * * * * * * Take up your quarrel with the foe;
* * * * * * * To you from failing hands we throw
* * * * * * * The torch; be yours to hold it high.
* * * * * * * If ye break faith with us who die
* * * * * * * We shall not sleep,
* * * * * * * though poppies grow
* * * * * * * In Flanders fields.</span></span>
