Fifty-eight years ago, on June 6, 1944, Allied (American, British, Canadian) naval forces, air power, and ground troops landed on the Normandy Coast. It was the beginning of the push to liberate Europe from the tyranny of Hitler.
It gives me chills to think of those brave men, many of whom lost their lives for people who were not their own. We must always remember and honor them because many of those they liberated have forgotten.
http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/srib001.gif Be strong!
It matters not how deep entrenched the wrong,
How hard the battle goes, the day is long:
Faint not, fight on!
Tomorrow comes the song.

We have some great articles from our GOPUSA columnists today. You'll find the first four in the GOPUSA Web Site and Eagle (http://gopusa.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/forums.cgi?forum=11) forum. I hope you'll read the ones that interest you and comment there.
<ul> Linda Chavez has an article on "Winning the Hispanic Vote in Texas". This is especially appropriate since the Texas State Convention is this weekend.
Alan Keyes is writing about the poison that is being taught to our children in "Sugarcoating Poison".
April Shenandoah has been spending a lot of time in airports lately and we all know the frustration that brings on. "Airport Searches: The Biggest Show in Town"
Mike Bayham is commenting on the new movie that everyone is talking about in his "The Reality of All Fears". [/list]
Then there is a really good, not to be missed, article from Thomas Segal. It makes me furious to realize what some of our veterans are going through just to be heard. Be sure to check out "Military Community Discovers the Arrogance of Congress" posted in
Our Military and Veterans (http://gopusa.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/forums.cgi?forum=30) forum.

Terri ~ you really know how to pick 'em. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/teeth2.gif I just read the 2002 Supplemental "Pork" Bill and now I don't even need http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cup.gif to get me wired. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif *
Looks like they are still hammering away at Arafat's digs ~ it must look like Swiss cheese by now. *I'd like to see them capture him and exile him to "tim-buc-tu" and if the next guy in charge has a hissy fit, "poof" him. *Of course this isn't going to happen ~ with a billion muslims in the world, most of whom support him. *Notice I didn't say "all". http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
FlGuy ~ Nope! Didn't even get a sprinkle yesterday. *It thundered a couple of times and moved on. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif *I'm going to South Carolina for vacation ~ it's the wrong time of year for the mountains if you are going for the leaves, but I'm just going to visit family and enjoy. *My brother lives in Tennessee and I might slip over there to say hi. *I'm an "impromtu" traveler ~ whatever floats my boat at the time. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
D-Day ~ http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif ~ that was the year before I moved to Florida from California. My parents drove all the way from LA to Miami. And no, it wasn't in a covered wagon. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif We had a 1936 Ford ~ "state of the art". http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif All I can remember is "Texas is very hot in September". :o The radiator kept boiling over and we would stop at creeks and rivers and fill containers of water to use along the way. Can you just see that today ~ now we have a cell phone and call AAA. Ahhh! Progress. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif
Have a great day! See you all after work. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif</span></span>

Hey guys! I just popped in to put in a link to my letter. They changed it some, but what I intended is intact. It did lose, however, some of the impact I intended. I'll post my original in the education forum, and you can tell me which you like better. NEA serves itself, not teachers (http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20020606-25005994.htm#5)

HI http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gopusa.gif
SO....without having the benefit of having browsed all the news yet this morning....I bring you the first news item of the day that I ran across and it stopped me in my tracks. HERE (http://gopusa.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=6&topic=234) Seems mr arafat has, once again, claimed victory as he waves his fingers in a "V" to a cheering crowd and proclaims that this will make the "palestinians" "more defiant". That, of course, translates easily into "more bombings". Mr. Sharon? Exactly how much more murder and mayhem will be allowed before the hammer of justice is brought down hard instead of just waved around? IMO, this is just a military version of negotiating with a terrorist.
I'll be back after I've read more news.....and SueElise's article!! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yelclap.gif

Here's a very interesting tidbit not worthy of its own thread, but interesting none the less: THE VET SAYS.. (http://www.worldnetdaily.co m/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ ID=26890) Apparently, a former White House vet says Clinton's pets were just props and that Buddy and Socks were banned from the residence. I didn't know this, but apparently Buddy was not the first dog in the Clinton homestead to get loose and be run over by a car! And....the big news (HA!) is that Billy has gotten another chocolate lab and named it "Seamus". If the past is any indication, this dog will be living a life of hell on earth with that bunch.

Hi Everyone!
RIM, it truly is amazing what some politicians will add to a bill that is supposed to protect the country from terror. I hope that if anyone recognizes something for their state that they will write their Senator and express an opinion. The article is in Congress.
Saber, I guess they blew a hole in Arafat's bedroom but that's about it. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/doh.gif
SueElise, good letter! Why did they change it? I wouldn't like that. Either print my letter or don't print it but don't change it. Did they ask you if they could?
The Clintons aren't home enough to have pets. Hopefully there is an employee there who will bond with the dog.

RIM, your trip from Calif made me think about my first car - a 1937 Ford. My father had worn it out at least twice, but to me it was the greatest thing on earth. Luckily, he was a mechanic and helped me rebuild it. Back in those days I was one of three seniors in high school to have a car. WOW. Now you go by the school parking lots and it seems as if everyone has a car and a lot of them I couldn't afford. I'm doing my part to conserve fuel and break the dependence on foreign sources - I drive a 2001 VW diesel that gets 34mpg/city and 44mpg/highway.
Hope everybody has a great day.

SueElise, I thought your article was very very good. I will say, however, that around here at least, the teachers get paid what IMO are ridiculously high salaries for 9 months of work. I believe the latest average teacher salary in our HS district is ๡,000+...with many much higher than that. And NEVER in all these years have I tried to reach a teacher by phone after the "closing" bell of the day that even ONE of them is there. They are driving out of the lot at 2:45 before the students are even on the bus. The NEA union has fought a very good fight for the teachers in this district and they still scream about their pay. Numero UNO reason why my taxes are truly through the roof and about to go into the stratosphere.

THE ASSOCIATED Press and Reuters said the new Cabinet spot, which must be approved by Congress, would include a new agency that acts as a clearinghouse for terrorism intelligence.
* * * “This is a sweeping transformation, the largest since World War II and (former President Harry) Truman,” one official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters. The official said the plan was not limited to intelligence gathering but was a wide-ranging reorganization of the way the government protects the United States from potential attacks.
* * * Bush plans to announced the restructuring 8pm EST Thursday night. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/bird16.gif

Although not a personal fan of much of his presidency, compare a Democrat like him to a typical Dem today such as Daschle. I think it is safe to say that their party has gone way downhill.
RIM, I thought at first you were going to say that covered wagons weren't invented yet, http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif but then realized my mistake when you mentioned about the radiator. Also, isn't going to SC and TN a bit like going to Wauchula or Zolfo? http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Sue Elise, Thank you for your activism, and please continue your efforts on behalf of conservatives, in the education arena or elsewhere.
They should have got Arafat when they could, but as I predicted last night, they are concerned about his possible replacement with someone even worse or unknown (IMO). Regarding the Clintons, animal abuse should come as no surprise on the long list of things they perpetrate in their daily lives, all the time. If you live with Chelsea, Hillary, and Bill, a "dog's life" really is a dog's life!
Terri, Read most of GOPUSA this morning, including the articles you mentioned. Mike Bayham needs to get a real job instead of being a movie reviewer. Didn't he just do one on Star Wars II a little bit ago? Is this political? http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif (I am busting his chops because I know Bayham well). Also, I finally watched the 2001 Year in Review last night. Very moving, and very well done, like all of GOPUSA's endeavors. Floridaguy, things were very different in the party of the Democrats in Roosevelt's time but the seeds were there. Even then they were becoming the party of big government.
KT4CCC, I thought Ridge would get a cabinet post. There is a lot of pressure from Congress to give him this so they can bring him to the hill and grill him. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/doh.gif And maybe he should be formally in the cabinet.
Speaking of grilling on the hill the hearings are underway. Time to posture, time to grab as much face time as possible, time to make outlandish accusations. :turquoiserolleyes: *That the disgraced Patrick Leahy should be chairing this hearing is disgraceful. The man has already proven his inability to handle secret material. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Der Alte, cars have sure changed a lot over the years.
Saber, teachers here don't make nearly that much on average. It's still a good salary but much lower than that.
FLguy, maybe Bayham has a nightjob reviewing the movies. :o
Welcome judy_wesselhoft http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Judging from your interests, I am sure you will find a thread in here to discuss those issues, as it has come up several times the last few days. I am hoping Ridge gets a Cabinet position, too.

Did you know that it is also the anniversary of the first large-scale battle fought by American soldiers in
World War I in Belleau Wood?
On this day in 1949, George Orwell's novel of a dystopian future, Nineteen Eighty-four, is published. The novel's all-seeing leader, known as "Big Brother," becomes a universal symbol for intrusive government and oppressive bureaucracy.

Yes Terri, that song is hauntingly beautiful. It is one major reason I love the music of Garth Brooks. He isn't afraid to show solemn remembrance or powerful emotion in songs, and he isn't afraid to digress from trivial things that people like B.S. (Britney Spears) sings about.
I have that C.D. Now, is it just me, or if one judged by the song lyrics (in general), does Brooks seem like a Republican?

Good afternoon all ~ Garth Brooks is ok, but Toby Keith is :1luvu:
Watched a little of the "Senate Judiciary Hearings on Terrorism". *Coleen Rowley seems to know where are the bodies are buried. :o *Hopefully the committee will garner some useful knowledge and actually do something about it. *It seems that everything in life revolves around acquiring power. *Then as O'Brien in 1984 said, it becomes "power for power's sake." *Too many chiefs and not enough indians. :turquoiserolleyes:
angelus ~ glad you got to spend the day with your honey. *http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Also, a warm WELCOME TO http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/gopusa.gif to our latest new members, Judy Wesselhoft, Sam Yuska, & GGDeal! Jump right in ~ we've got lots of interesting topics to discuss.
DerAlte ~ I know what you mean ~ when I was with the Dade County Schools there were only a few high school kids with "clunkers". *Now the parking lot has more student cars than teacher's cars. *And like you say, some are pretty pricey. * *
FlGuy ~ There's NO PLACE like Wauchula or Zolfo.:mr_yuk: *Well, except maybe Arcadia. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Looks like Arcadia might get some rain this evening ~ at least that's where the thunder is coming from. *We can hope. *Sorry your AC died ~ we have a remedy for this from the olden days you might like to try ~ it's called a "FAN". http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *(I know ~ who needs hot air - at any speed) http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
lpara ~ Greenville :o is right where I'm headed. *However, I cut my teeth on Miami traffic so Greenville should be a piece of cake. *Orlando is pretty scary too. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif And driving anywhere in Florida between November and April is putting your life in jeopardy ~ if ya get my drift. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mdr11.gif *I'm just a spring chicken compared to what's here in the winter. :o
JFTR ~ a "good" teacher is worth every penney they can get. *But nobody wants to keep throwing money at a broken system. *A CC teacher with supplements combined with the option of summer school makes very good money. *If you figure in the paid holidays and short work day (usually about 7 hours) which includes a lunch and planning period, the hourly figure is not too shabby. *Unfortunately this applies to poor teachers as well as the proficient. *Sue E ~ I've said it before, you are to be commended for hanging in ~ maybe with people like you the system will eventually change. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/twothumbsup.gif
Better close up shop ~ the thunder is getting closer. *Don't forget to watch the President tonight. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif

It seems she has turned loose a known terrorist conspirator by the name of Awadallah(sp) that we were holding. He says we need to email our congressmen PDQ and let them know what we think about it. This is beyond ridiculous. She needs to be impeached. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif I don't think I've ever seen O'Reilly this mad. :o

Good evening all. RIM, my secretary was smart; she brought her electric fan. :turquoiserolleyes: Was 90 inside my office when I left today. Welcome GGDeal. Terri, I just read/saw the new Lynn Cheney book this evening at our Republican Executive Committee Board meeting (our state committeewoman brought it to show off). I plan to get a copy for my 2-year old (the older boys wouldn't be into it by now). Conservative Gal, you could just post more next time to make up for it. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif RIM, as far as I know, it did not rain in Arcadia today, but it is supposed to rain all over the place tomorrow in SW Florida, from Highlands to Sarasota, Manatee to Polk, so get out your galoshes. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/yelclap.gif You do have galoshes, don't you?

We did hear most of the President's speech on the radio on the way to the party. It will be interesting to hear what all of you think tomorrow. It sounds as though this is going to be a huge department. I know something is needed but.....
The party was a huge success! It was her second one of the day and I think it all got a little overwhelming for a 6 year old. She was too snowed under with other things to look at her books much tonight but she will as books are really her favorite things.
Hi Tisha! I'm sure it is hot where you are. Lots more to come too.
