It's Official: NYC Council Opposes War

WNBC
March 12, 2003

NEW YORK -- In a vote that elicited a range of emotional responses, the City Council approved a resolution Wednesday opposing war with Iraq except as a last resort.

The 31-17 vote in the city hardest hit by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks came after months of behind-the-scenes debate about whether the council should take a position, particularly given the city's position as a symbol in the war on terrorism.

"If we're going to be looking for a fight, let's fight poverty, let's fight firehouse closures, let's fight racism and sexism," said Yvette Clarke, a Brooklyn Democrat who supported the resolution.

But Queens Democrat Alan Jennings said that after losing one of his closest friends in the World Trade Center attack, he was in no mood to vote for an anti-war measure.

Oooh... this was ALMOST Special Report status, but I just didn't nearly have enough information on Yvette Clark. Rats.

Yes, lets RAGE on poverty, Yvette. I'm feeling your pain. For the first time in your Democratic life, let's all address an issue that ALL AMERICANS suffer from - TERRORISM.

Poverty and firehouse closures didn't quite bring down 4 planes, the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

Instead, let's fight Muslim Extremists, who we can only convince them that Allah is not quite on their side by soundly kicking a little booty. Let's fight a guy who LIKES to start wars BEFORE he can plan his own. Let's fight a man whose policy is violence and intimidation, tortures and hurts women as a country when N.O.W. and WRG's won't even TOUCH the female issue, much less decry anything.

Yvette, no doubt, got in her sports car to get a latte'. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tinfoil.gif

Why do you think the story doesn't mention the fact that the NYC Coucil is made up of 47 Democrats and 4 Republicans?

I found this hit close to home. Our neighboring city (I live in the township, right up to the city line) passed a very similiar resolution just this week! I wanted to go over and shake every one of them until their teeth fell out! What gives them the right??

Hi Terry,

She needs a lot more than a wine cooler... She has a right to her views, but when she votes in her elected position.. she should consider how the people she is voting for feel about the subject of the vote.

I believe that the voters of NYC would be well advised to remove from office all council members who voted for the anti-war position, *at the next election regardless of party!

"Peace at any price" has never been an acceptable idea in the United States of America.

Having been a City Councilwoman myself, what astounds me the most is that these elected officals are wasting valuable time voting on National Foreign Policy, when in these days of rampant Federal and State budget cuts, there are certainly many more crucial items to be dealt with. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tearhair.gif

The quote from Councilman Gale Brewer..."Based on what we know..." is the most telling. *These politicians, protestors, Church leaders are all basing their protests on what they hear in the media, and we all know how reliable that is. *These people are making protestations on National policy without the information that is privy to the President and his staff.

The hubris! * Has everyone forgotten how to reason? http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/banghead.gif

What p be off so much is these are the people who probably lost someone in the attacks if this had been November of 2002 and teh vote come up I could have seen it when Duyba and friends did not have alot of the facts made public. But today in light of all the facts and issues it really angers me. i stood and watched Tower Town fall and I balled with FD *PD AND PA and they so called concil people stated they were sorry to us, know I see there were never really sorry.

Ok stupid question if NYC has so many dems in the council how come a Repubilcan can become mayor?

It must have something to do with their 15 minutes of fame. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shake.gif

Good question, Mark. NY politics are beyond comprehension.

Ooohh.. an excellent point, Drewman!

The headline SHOULD have read:

13 Democrats Support War with Iraq - 34 Remain Ignorant

Wow - Democrats supporting war should be a headline in itself! http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Once again, I hear that America is taking "preemptive action." *Actually, we would be merely taking up the war where it left off. *

Saddam, in 1991, was totally defeated and agreed to an armistice to spare his miserable life. *Saddam violated the specifics of that truce: *never to support terrorists, destroy his WMD, not to develop new weapons. *These are a few among other specifications of the armistice resolution.

No, Democrats and other challenged folks. *We are not launching a preemptive war. *We are merely disciplining an errant government who violated an armistice. * The "first" Iraqi war never stopped. It temporarily paused to while Saddam was given a chance to comply to the terms of the armistice.

Let's roll!
