Good Morning to everyone in the GOPUSA!

I hope you had a great weekend. My was very busy. E-mail traffic is normally light on the weekend, but this time I received over 400 e-mails from folks concerned about Bush's position on the immigration issue. During Friday and early Saturday morning, they casts hundreds of votes for immigration on the poll. We definitely plan to focus on this in future news and op-ed pieces.

They were also concerned that GOPUSA "suddenly pulled our poll" when we saw that "immigration had become the top issue". I don't know how many times I was asked "Why did you pull the poll? What are you afraid of?"

Since most of these folks are new to the site, they had no idea that our polls run from Sunday morning until the next Saturday morning. That's fine. What's dissappointing is that folks would jump to conclusions without even checking with GOPUSA for comment first.

There was even a web site that posted our poll results as of Saturday morning, and then commented on how the poll suddenly disappeared.

Oh well.

On a lighter note, our family saw Spider-Man this weekend, and it was great! I'll probably go see it again.

Have a great day,

Bobby

RIM, you are probably at least halfway through your day and I'm not really awake yet. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Bobby, I may have inadvertently contributed to the confusion about the poll. Polls are new to our site, in fact, I believe that was the third one. I didn't realize you were closing them on Saturday morning and thought it was down for some technical reason.

So now that we have the schedule down correctly let's all go vote in the current poll! *:cheesy:

As to the immigration issue, I believe those folks who are concerned would find that many of us here at GOPUSA are also very concerned about the President's stand on this issue. I hope that everyone is letting their representatives and the White House know their feelings on this issue.

Bobby

Yep, that was just our third online poll. So... I guess we can cut ourselves a bit of slack until we get all the procedures worked out.

I completely agree with your comments. Living in a border state (Texas), this is a big issue. We need to hear more about it.

I had a long-winded all set yesterday and I "poofed" it someway! DUH!

ANYWAY, I had a wonderful weekend recovering the economy at the garage sales and flea markets. Terri, I'm not one to shop for anything in particular....I just love the hunt and inevitably find a few "treasures" amongst all the junk! I found a number of real bargains on some stuff on Friday...and then concentrated on spending all my money on flowers at the flea market! I do mean FLOWERS!!!! Between my friend and I (me??), we bought so many flowers that my Jeep was COMPLETELY full. We even had to hang some of them on the coat hooks....and we had them hanging from the sun roof ridge! Oh what a sight we were..and now our gardens are really full of color and springtime is in our blood! (Now we had just better pray for no more nighttime frost!!)

OH, and Terri, you had asked me earlier about my having koi. I have a wonderful indoor koi pond. I cannot recommend enough that everyone should save up for a koi pond. It is THE most relaxing, enjoyable "hobby" I can imagine. A few years ago, a beautiful http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/teeth2.gif great blue heron came and feasted on my most beautiful koi fish and I nearly had a stroke. It just so happened that this happened at the same time I was gently "pushing" my husband on the idea of a porch. We kind of combined the two things (fish eating birds...and the porch) and decided to enclose the pond IN the porch. As you can imagine, we LIVE our lives out there and it is THE BEST!!!

Sorry about all the "personal" chit chat. I haven't done "news" yet today, but I notice a few mentions already about "immigration". If I even think about it, my bp starts pounding in my head. For me, it is right close to the top of my list of "idiocies". Let's just say it's my burning "hot button" and I can lose all sense of civility on the subject, but I'll try very hard to be a good girl on the subject.

RIM...how's it going with the "pile driver"? Does she realize yet that you do, indeed, run the place and that she had better be kissing your beeehind? LOL

Bobby, thank you's to you and Terri and all the rest of the people that I know are working "behind the scenes" to make this a really great place for conservatives. You all give us such a nice place to "sound off" and rant away...all in the confines of friends. Thank you.

Good Morning Everyone!

(I had to hurry in here to say that while it's still morning!)

Terri, Council Housing is housing that is owned by local government. In Northern Ireland, we lived in "Housing Trust" housing when we first went to live there but it was no lower in rents than if we rented from a private individual. It's very prevalent over in the UK.

I expect that if a person wasn't working, they would get lower rental rates but my husband had a good job on the police force.

Here's something from the Socialist Party (yuck!!) over there about Birmingham tenants' victory (http://www.socialistparty.o rg.uk/News2Frame.htm?id=n2 491) and here's a wee write-up about Manchester's Housing (http://www.manchester.gov.u k/atoz/hservices/housing.htm)

Busy day here in Ontario. Lots of running around to do but I'll be back later!

Terri

I've posted an update on the Colorado Senate race in Campaigns. Anyone else have any info on how things are going in your states?

Saber, I probably should go to garage sales and flea markets. Maybe one of these days I will. I love the idea of an indoor pool on the porch. It would be relaxing to watch the fish swimming around as long as I didn't have to clean the pool. That's why there is no acquarium in this house. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sulkoff.gif

Don't apologize for personal chit chat. The Precinct is a combination of all the things we want to talk about, personal, political, what have you. It's nice this way. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Aberfoyle, thanks for the explanation. The term "council housing" was new to me. We do have what is called "public housing" here, mostly in big cities. It is subsidized by the taxpayer. It contributes greatly to creating ghettos.

Saber
05-06-2002, 01:22 PM
Oh, I wouldn't have an aquarium either....unless I could pay one of those aquarium companies to come and clean it every week! The pond doesn't have ANY of that once you've got a stablized ecological system. I throw in some "good" bacteria until the plants become established for the season and take over the duty....and put in string algae combater chemicals in the spring when the water warms up. Oh yeah, I clean the filter about once a month (which takes about 2 minutes)....other than that....I feed the koi out of my hand...and sometimes I even get in the pond and "swim" around a little with them. They are an absolute pleasure, and the pond is VERY DEFINITELY a bp lowering "medication".

Saber, the pool sounds wonderful. It must be big. I could probably handle changing the filter but we don't have an enclosed porch to put it on. It would be wonderfully relaxing but I guess I will just keep petting the cat to lower my BP. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

We are all immigrants.
The real anger is that today immigrants don't assimilate like they used to and many of them come from cultures that have no historical connection with human freedom. This frightens many people who think they can protect themselves by halting immigration. However, slowing it down is probably called for and we need to re-introduce into our schools (where the immigrant children go) the historical basis of our country. Teachers should be required to teach why our country is great, what the principles are that made us great and inculcate pride in the USA.
Failure to do this only contributes to the disintegration of our country and it's founding principles, whether we have immigrants here ... or not.

OK, I'm off my high horse... http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Ok guys - I need your input.

Friday I gave an oral quiz in class - a kid who normally doesn't turn anything in turned in a quiz with a sketch on it.

The sketch was labelled - it was him standing with a gun and bullets going toward the other figure - me in a truck. There were "ha ha s" written on it as well.

I turned it into the school, and he's suspended right now - I don't know for how long. It is a felony offense in Virginia (it's considered a threat), but I have to press charges, and I don't know what to do. All I know is that I don't want this kid back in my class.

I have him twice a day - English and math. He's a 17 year old freshman, court ordered to go to school because of truancy. I know he has an explosive temper, but I've never seen him fight with anyone, and this is the first time I've seen anything like this from him.

What do you think?

Aknauta
05-06-2002, 06:50 PM
Sue Elise,
First things first, find out if he is on any prescription drugs. There is evidence that many of the school killers in the last few years have been on Ritalin.
If he is clean of drug use then consider speaking up in his behalf. My pop psychology would say that he is using attention getting behavior as a method of asking for help. Often kids don't have a good grasp of what current modern society considers extreme behavior and think it is only being naughty (which in the old days it WAS just being naughty).
RIM, gourgeous flag...well done. Do you need my address? http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Terri

Sue Elise, it's a tough call. I don't believe young kids should be suspended because they draw pictures of guns. But this is an older boy and it sure sounds like an implied threat to me. I guess I'd want to know if the kid has a record and what he has done. If he's been violent before you'd better sign that complaint and get him out of there for good. If your school doesn't know or won't share that info the police officer who takes the complaint probably will. His intent is important too. If he stays cocky and defiant about it then he will just cause more trouble.

The conservative voices rising against Colin Powell seem to be increasing. Today both Rush and Sean Hannity are predicting he will resign within a few months at most.

Sue E ~ Terri is right. Find out as much about this kid and his past as possible. Whether he has a history of problems, suspensions etc. Ignoring warning signs could be very dangerous. Nobody wants to think that a 17 year old would intentionally do something stupid, but it has happened. Even if he doesn't have a record or was only joking around he needs a good dose of adult reality to his backside. I know, that's not PC. But PC is what got us to the point we are today ~ an ounce of prevention and all that, ya know.

Hi Sabre ~~ Sorry, I left out Ill. I guess because it isn't a border state it doesn't get the press that we do down south. But from what you have told me, you have just as big a problem as we do here.

That wasn't a flag you saw in the rear window of my car. I had made a small throw, red/white/blue and being a patriotic conservative http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flag17.gif I wanted to make sure everyone knew it. http://gopusa.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif The flag in the picture is about four times as big as the throw.

Terri ~ it looks like we'll all have to be more careful about opening our mail boxes. I just heard about the pipe bomb in Colorado :o. I just can't believe what this world is coming to. :turquoiserolleyes:

Thanks guys, for the advice. I just got off the phone with my dad, and he said pretty much the same. I was already planning to ask for his school records, but he suggested asking about court records (which I know he has since he a repeated truant) and asking for a school psychologist to evaluate him. I also need to find out how his parents responded. One thing I am sure about - I will not have him back in my classroom.

Do whatever you have to do SueElise. Don't let anyone try to sweep this thing under any rug...and don't be intimidated by anyone saying it's being blown out of proportion. No doubt he'll say he was just "joking" when the weight starts to fall on him. I have ZERO trust in any school psychologist, especially in an instance like this. He's got a school job and may say, or be leaned on to say, that this kid has no deep seated problem in order to keep the school "in the clear" if you get my drift.......

Michigan is another state that has a big problem with immigrants.

RIM, I guess we just have to be more careful everywhere.

Sue Elise, be sure to let us know what happens with this boy.
