A Dubious Anniversary
By Kay R. Daly
Septembe 27, 2004

Get out the party hats and the noisemakers! Pro-abortion forces nationwide this Tuesday will celebrate the four year anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration approval of RU-486 (Mifeprex), otherwise known as the "abortion pill." Heaven knows a more efficient method of eliminating unborn children was just what this world needed. No fuss, no muss, just pop a pill and eliminate the problem.

Alexander Sanger of Planned Parenthood called the RU-486 approval "the biggest thing since the birth control pill." Indeed, it may be so. Clearly, the idea was to make abortion less invasive, surgical and difficult so that more women would choose that option with greater ease. In this pill-happy society, taking a pill has less of a psyche imprint than traditional abortion procedures. It makes the whole ordeal just a bit less climactic and a bit more antiseptic.

Apparently, the less thought about the consequences of casual sex, the better. Take a birth control pill and bed down with whomever, whenever, wherever. Take an RU-486 the day after a sexual tryst to eliminate those nagging little consequences of a lack of forethought.

Truly we have gone down a pathway that has devastating consequences. Consequences that cannot, by the way, be eradicated with a pill. In this blind, self-absorbed pursuit of so-called equality we have accomplished nothing more than the slaughter of countless unborn children, reoriented a generation of women to new, questionable definitions of self-respect and devalued sex, marriage, and life itself.

It used to be that a damaged reputation, sexually transmitted diseases or heaven forbid, a pregnancy, were deterrents for young women tempted by sexual advances of hormonally- charged young men. But the shame of out-of-wedlock pregnancies has vanished almost completely. And a compromised virtue is merely a charmingly antiquated notion.

Unfortunately, though, there are realities that cannot be aborted with a pill. The law of gravity dictates that if you leap off of a building, you will fall to the earth. Similarly, there are basic biological differences between the sexes that are not going to be "equalized" by the wholesale brainwashing of a generation of women that sexual promiscuity is "no big deal."

But the road to equality cannot be found through a bedroom door. There is nothing "equal" about waiting by a phone hoping that he'll call after a one night stand. There is nothing "equal" about praying that your period will arrive. There is nothing "equal" about losing a man's interest because he has gotten all he has wanted from you. There is nothing "equal" about buying a pregnancy test at a drugstore and praying that the second pink line doesn't materialize. There is nothing "equal" about lying on a table spread-eagled listening to the searing sounds of a vacuum sucking out the tiny parts of your child.

It is a sad reality that many women today view sexual liberation as empowering. Abortion is viewed merely as a continuation of that issue of "control" over one's body.

Control, and indeed, self-respect, is in saying no before the consequence phase even begins. If you don't want to crash to the ground when you step off the rooftop of a building, then have the self-control not to take that last step.

If feminists truly wanted to empower women, they would spend every last dime of their bulging treasuries to teach young women where the real power lies. For once, promiscuous men wouldn't be the major beneficiaries of the abortion agenda.

It should be noted here that it is not only liberal, pro-abortion females who have been taken in by the sexual revolution. Come on conservative gals, 'fess up. How many hours have you spent comforting a conservative, pro-life friend who has been sleeping with or living with their boyfriend only to grow more frustrated and baffled because there has been no marriage proposal?

Women seem to have failed to realize that a man's love and respect is not enhanced by the ease with which he can bed down his target of the hour. And becoming a wife without the ring only puts off the necessity of a marriage proposal off indefinitely. Why cut off the escape hatch, currently unencumbered by divorce lawyers?

At the end of this equality rainbow is supposed to be happiness, comfort, security, etc., correct? So far, the sales of Prozac, self-help books and billable hours of shrinks don't seem to be suffering. Indeed, there are even websites popping up on the Internet for women to declare their pride and lack of regret in having an abortion. Maybe this can be categorized under "If We Say It Often Enough, It Will Be True."

How tragic that we have come to this point where consequences for our life and death decisions have been relegated to the pharmaceutical industry. The less we have to deal with the pain of responsibility and the more we can blame the reality of our circumstances on external forces, the better we can cope. Have we really come a long way, baby?

Danco Laboratories, makers of Mifeprex, put out a press statement on the second anniversary, hailing the 100,000 women who had "chosen Mifeprex", or RU-486 for their "non-surgical abortion." In fact, according to the jubilant Danco Laboratories, Mifeprex has been used by nearly one million women worldwide, excluding China, with a trend line indicated increases in usage.

Er, Happy Anniversary.
