Heinz-Kerry: 'Shove It, You Idiot Scumbags!'
By Robin Mullins Boyd
September 23, 2004
The First Lady of the United States has always stood as a role model and an icon in American culture. She is a representative of the United States of America around the world. The First Lady is in the public eye and under public scrutiny from the beginning of her husband's campaign. She remains a public figure until her death.
Feminists abhor the image of the First Lady as a June Cleaver type woman. They say that the current impression of the First Lady is a "plastic" woman who trots after her husband. Despite this, most people prefer that the First Lady behave like a lady. After all, she is the First Lady of the United States, not just the President's wife.
Teresa Heinz Kerry wants to be our next First Lady. While on the campaign trail, she has used demeaning and insulting language to describe those that do not support her husband. At a MoveOn House Party, Teresa passed out "Asses of Evil - Bush, Cheney and Ashcroft" buttons. At a press conference during the DNC Convention, Teresa told a reporter to "Shove it" when he questioned her "anti-American" remark.
At a Kerry campaign rally, Teresa responded to hecklers yelling "Four More Years" by saying, "They want four more years of hell". She told reporters that people that do not support John Kerry's health care plan are "idiots". Teresa's latest description of those that do not support the Kerry/Edwards ticket was "scumbags". Meanwhile, John Kerry and his staffers stand by and laugh. They shrug off her comments with statements such as "she just speaks her mind" and "that's how strong women respond". The media laud her "openness" and admire her for being a "breath of fresh air".
First Ladies have demonstrated their moral strength while maintaining a sense of decency. They have been examples of grace and fashion. First Ladies are known for carrying themselves in a way that would make Mrs. Manners proud. Jackie Kennedy demonstrated such strength after her husband was assassinated - holding her children's hand and standing with firm resolve. Whether you like her or not, Hillary Clinton was instrumental in expanding the role of women in politics. Laura Bush was a calming influence after the horrific events of September 11. We cannot forget Eleanor Roosevelt, Mamie Eisenhower, Pat Nixon or Nancy Reagan when discussing First Ladies.
No one votes for President based solely on the First Lady. But the behavior of a candidate's wife can cause some voters that are on the fence to swing to the other side. If the candidate's wife behaves at State dinners like she does on the campaign trail, it would be a diplomatic crisis. Someone needs to remind Teresa Heinz Kerry that the First Lady is the First Lady of ALL Americans. Even the ignorant scumbags.
