Liberals have been doing a great deal of harrumphing over revelations that the Pentagon may have paid Iraqi newspapers to publish positive stories about the American presence in their country. To paraphrase Sen. John McCain to Tim Russert on Meet the Press, if the stories are true and that is what it takes to get the news out in Iraq, so what?

Indeed. In fact, a much more sinister form of propaganda is being spread right here in the land of the free.

It has become almost an article of faith among conservatives (myself included) that the so-called mainstream media are about as biased in favor of the Left as they can be and still call themselves American. But occasionally, one of them stuns me with a statement so blatant that it takes my breath away. A recent example was so palpable that it could provide the cornerstone for yet another sequel to Bernie Goldberg's best-selling media exposes` Bias and Arrogance.

Reporting on President Bush's trip to the Southwest for a policy speech and photo-op on the issue of out-of-control illegal immigration, NBC White House correspondent David Gregory made this statement: "The president has had to repackage his message to please his anti-immigrant base."

The statement so stunned me that I repeated it to myself three times - twice silently and once aloud - then immediately wrote it down. I then looked at the words I had written and wondered to myself: Could a sophisticated, educated reporter for a major American network really get it so wrong? Is David Gregory really that ignorant? Does he really believe what he is saying? Yes, yes and yes.

If you are a conservative, ask yourself this question: Are you "anti-immigrant?" Do you know anyone who is "anti-immigrant?" I'm sure there are Americans, especially in time of war, who would like to shut down our borders altogether, thereby denying entry to anyone under any circumstances. However, the only political base these people comprise is that of David Duke, and that is a very small base.

Gregory's statement is an indication of the attitude of the overpaid elites who talk to one another at Manhattan cocktail parties and then decide what news to report to the masses - and what to think about it. Examples of this elitism abound: Newsweek's lies about treatment of prisoners at GITMO, Dan Rather's insistence that forged documents actually tell a true story, and The New York Times' relentless pounding of Abu Ghraib into the consciousness of the nation, to name just a few. But David Gregory's statement gives us a clear idea of what the elites think of those who believe in enforcing our immigration laws: we're anti-immigrant.

The blurring of the line between legal and illegal immigration has been going on for some time by the advocates of open borders. I first saw it manifest a few years ago at a conference on immigration. Speaker after speaker spoke of corporate America violating the rights of "undocumented workers." One even said that employers were being unfair by treating legal workers the same as those who were "undocumented." The room got very quiet when I suggested that perhaps the reason employers make no distinction between legals and illegals is because our government has virtually erased the line between the two.
