Answered Prayers: The Downfall Of Governor Spitzer
By Carol Devine-Molin
March 26, 2008
Now here's where the story becomes even more fascinating: According to the Miami Herald, GOP strategist, lobbyist, and adept political fixer, Roger Stone, had his lawyers advise the FBI in a letter dated 11/19/07 that Governor Spitzer was canoodling with high-priced call-girls, information that he obtained from a "social contact in an adult-themed club". Reportedly, the letter also stated that ''The governor has paid literally tens of thousands of dollars for these services. It is Mr. Stone's understanding that the governor paid not with credit cards or cash but through some pre-arranged transfer.''
Previous news reports in mid-March indicated that Spitzer's bank had alerted federal authorities to his suspicious transactions, which, in turn led to the discovery of his ties with the Emperor's Club [prostitution ring]. Frankly, it's unclear how and when the actual chain of events played out as the Feds pieced together incoming information from a variety of sources on the Spitzer investigation. But it's noteworthy that Roger Stone: a) provided the FBI with pivotal input on L'Affair Spitzer in a timely manner, and b) acted as a consultant to Republican Senate Leader Joseph Bruno until the summer of 2007. Despite his unorthodox methods, at the very least we have to acknowledge that Roger Stone fought the good fight in efforts to oust Eliot Spitzer from the governorship.
