The Story You Haven't Yet Heard About Bowe Bergdahl's Desertion

By Michelle Malkin

Michelle MalkinFive years ago, I publicly raised questions about Bowe Bergdahl's desertion from Blackfoot Company, 1-501 Infantry (Airborne), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

A few weeks after his so-called "capture" in late June 2009, three conflicting accounts surfaced: U.S. officials told the Associated Press Bergdahl had "walked off" the base with three Afghans; the Taliban claimed on its website that "a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison" and into their arms; and Bergdahl claimed in his Taliban "hostage video" that he had "lagged behind a patrol" before being captured.

I asked on my blog: Were the AP's sources mistaken? Or is the disturbing first account the right one? What about the "three Afghans" Pfc. Bergdahl reportedly "just walked off" with after his shift? Who are they? What's going on?

Five years ago, one of the brave soldiers who risked his life to search for Bergdahl answered my questions, and I published his statement on July 20, 2009: "I know the story and the accounts that he was drunk or that he was lagging behind on patrol are not true -- this soldier planned this move for a long time. He walked off the post with a day's supply of water and had written down before that he wanted to live in the mountains. ... He is an embarrassment to everyone who has worn the uniform."

After news broke this weekend of President Obama's trade of five high-level Taliban commanders at Gitmo for Bergdahl's "freedom," I heard from another soldier who served on the search team. "Many of my brothers died because of Bergdahl's actions, and this has been a very hard day for all Geronimos," he told me after documenting his proof of service. Other journalists ignored his attempts to get the truth out. My source still holds a highly sensitive position, so you won't see him all over the cable news shows. But he wants all of you to know the hell he and his comrades have been reliving:

"I was assigned to 1st Platoon of Blackfoot Company," based out of Forward Operating Base (FOB) Salerno in Khost, Afghanistan, he said. "Bowe's platoon was assigned to conduct security and stability operations out of FOB Sharana and other locations in Paktika. The untold background that led to Bowe's situation involves an article and pictures published by Guardian reporter Sean Smith." One of the battalion leaders punished soldiers, including Bergdahl (who had been photographed snoozing in his armored vehicle), with extra guard duty assignments for conducting operations in an unprofessional manner at Outpost MEST (OP MEST).

"Bergdahl was already disenchanted with the war effort," my source said, "and I think the extra duty was the last straw for him." On the morning of June 30, 2009, "Bergdahl completed a guard shift, removed his equipment, weapon and sensitive items, and left OP MEST with several Afghan security forces personnel. He took a compass, a couple bottles of water and two knives and his journal. His exact intentions may never be known, but he willingly walked off OP MEST and was secured by enemy forces not long after."

My source, who had been up the previous night on a separate raid, was "shaken awake" on the afternoon Bergdahl disappeared. "We were told there was a DUSTWUN (Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown), and to pack for a three-hour assault. We received a brief that Bergdahl was missing, and we were going to get him. ... Sometime after dark we boarded CH-47's to assault an objective thought to contain Bergdahl. We never made it to the landing zone, as the helicopters took very heavy fire on approach to the objective and had to divert."

The soldier's Focused Targeting Force (FTF) platoon was not told that it was being diverted to OP MEST. When they landed, he said, "We thought we were in enemy territory, so I recall my friends and I screaming 'Vehicles' and preparing to engage with the LAW and SMAW-D rockets we carried. We soon realized the lights were from RG-31 and Maxpro MRAPs, friendly vehicles, and de-escalated the situation. The CH-47's had dropped us off at OP MEST and did not relay that information."

With that near-disaster over, the soldier recounted: "We averaged 18 to 22 kilometers a day on foot, clearing house to house, room to room looking for Bergdahl. ... We even went as far as rappelling down wells and crawling through tunnels to look for him." The standard procedure for recapturing Bergdahl was not "normal," the soldier noted. "He was very good with knives, and trained to throw and fight hand-to-hand with knives. We did not know the mental state of Bergdahl at the time. All we knew was he left on his own, he caused us lots of hardship, and if we entered a room and saw him, we would put him down because he could attack us."

On the morning of July 4, 2009, the soldier recalled, "we assaulted several objectives looking for Bergdahl. ... We executed the mission without incident and were waiting to be exfiltrated. Our aircraft were in sight when they turned and flew in the opposite direction. At the time we did not know why, but we were stranded. The enemy took advantage of Bergdahl's capture and attacked numerous outposts that morning."

"Combat Outpost Zerok was almost overrun, multiple soldiers were wounded, and PFCs Justin Casillas and Aaron Fairbairn lost their lives fighting that day," the soldier told me. (I wrote about their deaths in my July 8, 2009, column, not knowing they were related to the Bergdahl mess.)

My source continued: "We learned later that our exfiltration aircraft were diverted to support COP Zerok, and that the situation there was so dire that at one point there were two Apache gunships on station that went Winchester, meaning they expended all ordinance and ammunition, but they would not abandon the soldiers still fighting, so they resorted to low-level unarmed passes to distract the enemy. Bergdahl's actions undoubtedly caused these events. We spent the remainder of Independence Day walking in the desert ... waiting for aircraft that did not come for many, many hours."

He continued: "A few days later, we (FTF) conducted a daylight raid on some tents looking for Bergdahl. We took heavy small arms and RPG fire on approach and ran off the CH-47s in contact. Our entire element engaged the enemy, who turned out to be a Taliban shadow governor and his bodyguards. ... Multiple people died that day. ... All of this happened because Bergdahl got tired of playing soldier. The remainder of that deployment was focused on recovery efforts. Countless members of the brigade were wounded, and we lost good friends, among them PFC Matthew Martinek and 2LT Darryn Andrews. I have no doubt these great men would be alive if Bergdahl did not leave."

In addition to Andrews, Casillas, Fairbairn and Martinek, PFC Morriss Walker and Staff Sergeants Clayton Bowen, Kurt Curtiss and Michael Murphrey died as a result of Bergdahl's abandonment. That's eight dead American soldiers (not six, as the rest of the media have reported) betrayed by selfish Bergdahl and reckless President Obama.

My source did not mince words: "The fact that our government negotiated with terrorists and our enemy is incomprehensible. The fact that they exchanged five war criminals for a traitor is sickening. The worst part for those of us that suffered through that time is that PFC Bergdahl is being hailed as some kind of hero. He was automatically promoted to Specialist and Sergeant, ranks he does not deserve and did not earn. I have no doubt he will receive back pay for these past five years, a substantial sum. There will be book deals, and his family are celebrities. I am glad he is safe, and happy for his family, but he should return home to face a court martial."

Are you listening, Capitol Hill and America? The Bowe Bergdahl mess isn't just a story about one deserter, but two. There's the muddle-headed lowlife who left his post and brothers behind. And there's the corrupt commander in chief who has jeopardized more American soldiers' lives to "rescue" Bergdahl by bowing to the Taliban, while snubbing the surviving heroes and the eight dead American soldiers who lost their lives because of him. This cannot stand.

If you have not figured it out yet.
This Obama will do anything and everything he can to damage or bring discredit to the U.S.
Do not believe that these failed policies, incompetence, lies, immorality and deceptions are not a deliberate calculated attack on the U.S.A.
Obama is a perfect example of the enemy from within.

Of course Bergdahl is being hailed a “hero” by the President and his crew. Apparently in their book anyone who turns against the US is a hero because they have no use for patriotism, loyalty, honesty or sacrifice. The guy deserted his post and caused the deaths of eight good men, so he is a perfect example of “heroism” for our preening president and his mindless followers.

I was a young teen at the time, and I remember Vietnam and how horribly the returning soldiers were treated by the leftist sob sisters when they came home. These very young heroes were called murderers and baby killers. They were spat upon and ridiculed. This incident smacks of that same attitude. The only difference is, instead of stupid hippies, it is the president of the United States doing the hypothetical spitting on the real heroes. He chooses to ignore the brave men who died trying to rescue this sorry excuse of a man, and lionizes the deserter instead. (Did anyone vet this guy’s story before Obama went all willy-nilly illegally releasing a deserter while letting true heroes rot in foreign jails? If I were a conspiracy theorist I would wonder if that’s exactly why Obama did choose this man, and rushed through the trade while ignoring the checks and balances. He was giving the enemy everything and costing them nothing, all the while trying his best to make a sympathetic hero out of a deserter.) All in a day’s work for our nincompoop in chief.

Now Bergdahl’s former roommate and Ballet teacher has come out to say the guy she knew was interesting and nothing like what the media is trying to paint him. Ballet Teacher?? Military warrior??? What has Obama done to our Military and our men but turn it’s strength into a Russian version of the Nutcracker, where the former potent gonads of our men now look more like Eggs Benedict ARNOLD.

Are you people not getting tired of the same old scenario that occurs when our incompetent Demander-in-Chief takes over the handling of any government problem. The fortunes of the undeserving rule breakers always get enhanced as the fortunes of the law abiding rule followers is diminished in kind. Just how much more damage to the good of this nation and the good people thereof can we block over the next 2 years we legally have to endure him and his foolish idea of control disguised as governance? Watch his overconfidence turn to fear when and if a veto prove Republican Senate majority materializes in the fall. Is there any better reason to vote Republican? Try thinking of the word survival.

He’s a self-absorbed, legacy creating fool. Taking another ‘shellacking’ in the mid-term is of no consequence to him at this point. I personally want us to capture a veto-proof majority in the Senate – this will expose the country to how ruthless this man really is – which will ultimately damage the Democratic party for years to come.

When will the insanity stop! Obama is bringing us to our knees on purpose with his anti-colonial agenda. For the father of Bergdahl to speak in Arabic on national TV to his son is a disgrace. What ever happened to our honor and pride in this country. Does being free mean anything goes….. I’m certainly tired of the whole thing. By the end of this mans terms we won’t have anything of the Constitution left.

That young man needs to be present and testify at Bergdahl’s court martial; the American people deserve the truth of this matter (among many, many others)! The US Army will properly follow procedure according to the UCMJ in this highly political issue and ensure justice, provided the Administration doesn’t somehow interfere. No matter the outcome, it belies the fact that this president negotiated with terrorists! That fact is unforgiveable. God Bless America.

Most of what we gain from our conversations with our choir members herein is prima fascia true. Some is hyperbole, and some is bat-scat crazy! But through it all, I’ve maintained to myself that in the event of a worst-case-scenario, whereby Obama fulfills the conspiratorialists’ most dire suspicions and predictions, our saving grace would be our own military. With that in mind, this situation bears serious scrutiny! Watch closely and record which way the Army goes on this issue! Can the administration bring to bear enough pressure to prevent a thorough military investigation of this case? Or will our military conduct an open, fair and factual hearing; with the chips falling where they may? The unfolding answers to those salient questions will give us some clues regarding the extent to which we may be able to rely on our military to protect our Constitution and our freedoms! What a terrible way to have to look at our future – all the consequence of the devious, untrustworthy and disloyal man who is now our president. Never thought I’d ever have to consider these kinds of possibilities in my lifetime, and I take no conspiracy-driven relish in it!

So all you conservatives who sat on your hands or didn’t vote for Mitt Romney because he was a Morman are now reaping the fruits of your apathy. It should now be obvious that we have some hidden kingmakers who sold BHO to the American public like a bar of soap. They had to have known of his background and beliefs, but used the weakness of our electoral process to stick us with a ringer.
If the actions of BHO don’t show us the weakness of our system, nothing will. We need every voter to be identified and verified with the president’s ability to issue edicts curtailed or eliminated. In addition, Lobbyists need to represent only one client and pay a huge licensing fee proportional to the money they spend.

The 2012 election was as honest as one of Stalin’s and yet the media still continues to cover up corruption obvious to everyone else. Read the fine print and use your common sense. In the last 5 years we’ve spent 9 trillion dollars on fluff with nothing to show for the spending.

Once again, Malkin is spot on. There seems to be several things afoot here. One, after hearing remarks from obama’s obedient and destructive lap dog, Harry Reid, I believe that if this played well, it would serve as a segue into emptying Gitmo of its Taliban and El Qaeda murderers. Two, it’s a distraction to Benghazi and VA scandals.Three, it seems likely that the narcissistic obama believes that he would be seen by most Americans as a hero having come to the rescue of Bergdahl. With that said, if obama truly believes that trading five very high ranking bad-guys for a very low ranking suspected traitor is a good swap, I would like to play poker against him. Additionally, the Lyin’ King continues to show his disdain for our military men and women and the citizens of the United States whom he considers to be too stupid to see through his donkey dust.

This failure of a social experiment will take years to undo with incallcuable costs attached. It is a tragic enough situation we find ourselves in but, for those who served in other conflicts, those who fought in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Canal Zone and not against Muslims but mostly Communists, this degeneration of our military by design and by politicians who have enabled it to occur is sickening. The reduction in respect and capabilities in our Armed forces is not acceptable but, we are making it so by not DEMANDING THAT THOSE WHO DEFEND OUR FREEDOMS BE TREATED IN A REPECTFUL, AND HONORABLE FASHION AND NOT AS A DESPICABLE GROUP WHICH WOULD BE TOTALLY DISBANDED IF THIS POISONOUS PRESIDENT HAD HIS WAY! There are 28 million veterans in this country. The present and ongoing VA scandal is but one of many; all not seriously addressed by either the congress or the president but, IT SHOWS THE PERCEPTION OF THIS PRESIDENT AND HIS ENABLERS IN CONGRESS; ALL OF WHOM SHOULD BE FORCED TO RESIGN IN this disabled Vietnam Veteran’s estimation. They take the SAME OATH to defend and uphold the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic: NOT to become such or to enable those inimical to us in any fashion as is done in my eyes every time we deal with aid in any form to Islamic nations who in reality are ALL inimical to OUR VERY EXISTENCE!By ignorance, you will only allow this serial abuse to continue to our ETERNAL DETRIMENT and the eventual loss of every right and the elimination of all personal CHOICE! Vote, sensibly and with liberty in mind or, be prepared to LOSE IT!

All Republicans and those Democrats that have some semblance of a conscience should get together and have Obama arrested as a criminal, a traitor in the White House.

mightyjn, the amount of egg on the face Obama and co would get if they DID allow the army to prossecute Bergdahl, imo is so big that he will never let it happen, OR will pardon him should they do so.

Bergdahl is a traitor, plain and simple. He should be put in a hard labor camp the rest of his life. Obama and trash Susan Rice labeling Bergdahl a hero. The low information voters who voted for Obama the communist for a second term, are America haters as is Obama. Obama should be tried for treason and put in a hard labor camp with Bergdahl!

I agree with you except one part. He should spend the rest of his life at the end of a rope. But that’s a different war story.

….and I hope zerO understands how many military and veteran votes he just tossed out the window.

But wait. You folks have it all wrong. Obama said that it (releasing Bergdahl) was the humane thing to do since he was not well. Of course, that was a lie. Too bad he didn’t think about the four Americans at Benghazi and their health. But it was more important for him to prepare for his trip to campaign for the presidency in Nevada the day after Benghazi. The terrorists got their way in Benghazi, and now they’ve gotten their way with the Bergdahl situation. Do you see a trend here?

Is there anything Barack Obama has not done, that deserves him to be Impeached, ASAP??? They man is running wild and no one can stop him!

The Deserter Sgt. Bowe latest fiasco, reminds me Hillary cry before Congress, “WHAT DOES IT MATTER”… Is anyone in Washington going to do anything about it… Don’t think so, this last blonder will join Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS, the VA scandal, etc., etc., etc.

No one in government has shown yet, to have the Steel ***** required to kick Obama out of the WH. And we continue to live in shame since Jan. 2008.

GOD SAVE OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE, THERE IS NOT SAVER AT HOME!

Leave it to the Obama Imperial Governement to come out with 3 different stories about deserter Sgt. Owen and then, and coming out with a similar number of lies, and cover-ups till the story die down, like the IRS, EPA, the VA, the Fast & Furious, the Bengazhi Murders Scandal, etc.

Wish to sincerely thank,. Michelle Malkin for her hard and relentless work, always front-and-center, and in Obama’s face, for TELLING THE TRUTH TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, about all of Obama’s Imperial Government, and Liberal Democrats Lies, Cover-ups, racism and bigotry against Americans, whenever they have no intelligent arguments to defend their ongoing philosoply of “spreading Missery, Racism, and Bigotry”!

    THE TRUTH IS MARCHING HOME…
