Elder: History Lesson - Under 'Fascist' Bush, Democrats Feared Tyranny

By Larry Elder

Once upon a time, a group of people known as the "Democrats" expressed great fear of tyranny by government.

This was a time long, long ago, when a man from a place called Texas, representing a people known as the Republicans, occupied the White House. Leaders of the Democrats feared tyranny by the Republicans and called the man from Texas racist, oppressive and tyrannical.

To refresh your recollection, we offer a few examples from the distant past:

Billionaire Democratic contributor George Soros. He said the George W. Bush White House displayed the "supremacist ideology of Nazi Germany" and that Bush's administration used rhetoric that echoed his childhood in occupied Hungary. "When I hear Bush say, 'You're either with us or against us,'" Soros said, "it reminds me of the Germans." Soros later said: "The Bush administration and the Nazi and communist regimes all engaged in the politics of fear. ... Indeed, the Bush administration has been able to improve on the techniques used by the Nazi and communist propaganda machines."

Former Vice President Al Gore. He said: "(George W. Bush's) executive branch has made it a practice to try and control and intimidate news organizations, from PBS to CBS to Newsweek. ... And every day, they unleash squadrons of digital brownshirts to harass and hector any journalist who is critical of the President."

Former two-time Democratic presidential candidate and civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson. After Congress passed new anti-terrorism laws following 9/11, he said: "We are in danger. The extreme right wing has seized the government. Tonight, (John) Ashcroft and the CIA and the FBI and Homeland Security and the IRS can work together. So look out, because without a definition of who is a terrorist, anyone can be. ... Martin Luther King could have been. ... The right-wing media, the FBI -- they are targeting our leadership."

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee. He said: "What we are dealing with right now in this country is whether we are having a kind of bloodless, silent coup or not. ... (President Bush) is trying to bring to himself all the power to become an emperor -- to create Empire America." An Iraq War opponent, McDermott said, "The President of the United States will lie to the American people in order to get us into this war."

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who sits on four Senate committees, including Armed Services and Commerce. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she said, "George Bush let people die on rooftops in New Orleans because they were poor and because they were black."

Entertainer and liberal activist Harry Belafonte. When asked whether the number and prominence of blacks in the Bush administration suggested a lack of racism on Bush's part, Belafonte said, "Hitler had a lot of Jews high up in the hierarchy of the Third Reich."

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, former presidential candidate. He characterized the contest between Democrats and Republicans as "a struggle of good and evil. And we're the good." Shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks, Dean actually mused about an "interesting theory" he'd heard -- that G.W. Bush had prior knowledge of 9/11 yet took no action to stop it!

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. In 2003, Albright said she thought Bush had already captured Osama bin Laden -- but that Bush was not going to reveal this until just before the 2004 election to get maximum political benefit! She later claimed she was joking, but Morton Kondracke, who overheard the comment, said, "She was not smiling when she said this," and that others in the room heard it, too, "and they didn't think it was a joke."

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., sitting member of all six subcommittees of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He compared the newly conservative-controlled Republican House of Representatives to "the Duma and the Reichstag" -- referring to the legislature set up by Czar Nicholas II of Russia and the parliament of the German Weimar Republic that brought Hitler to power.

An anti-gun New York newspaper published a report and interactive map with the names and addresses of gun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. Shorty after this, an anti-gun columnist for a prominent New Jersey paper said: "(I got) a nasty note from one of my most progressive friends who says ... 'You're a fool because when the right wing takes over the government, we're gonna need guns. ... And then there won't be guns to fight them back."

"Words matter," Obama once said.

During the Bush years, Democrats feared, or at least claimed to fear, the possibility of tyranny -- precisely the purpose of the Second Amendment. If these Democrats were even remotely sincere, why wouldn't any self-respecting patriot want the right to keep and bear arms to protect against thugs like that? Indeed, why not mandatory gun ownership -- at least when Republicans control the White House?

You warned us. We believe you. The threat of tyranny is ever-present.

Good quotes Larry! Is the notion of hypocrisy present? No way…not this administration!

Democrats have long been the party of fear because as one prominent Dem said years ago” fear is a powerful motivator”.
The Demorats get a lot of mileage out of this tactic so they will ride it until the horse drops dead. The news media will support and elevate the tactic so it is a win-win.

Obozo is a Marxist…as is Soros, Hillary, Ried and Pelosi to mention a few. Last time I checked Marxism has not turned out well for the countries or the citizens of those countries.
These idiots really do not see the light!

For anyone who doesn’t believe that the Democrats are the party of fear, doesn’t know American History…. Who originated the KKK?, Who used their National Guard to prevent school integration? What Party provided the Grand Klegal, who was also a US Senator for an eternity?

Remember…it is only Tyranny if done by the Other Guy. So many Liberals are happily supporting all of these anti-rights and anti-freedoms actions by Obama and his administration. As if somehow THEY will be among the select few not to suffer under Tyranny. Just like how a select few (party leadership) didn’t suffer under Communism. Wait until the sad day when these Liberals discover that the rights they demanded government take from others…are also taken from them. Of course, by then they won’t have the means (guns) to do anything about it!

it used to bother me when i see the media give a psaa to democrats if they do wrong. the media would and will trash a republican without hesitation. tell lies at the drop a hat. and the bad part is, most will believe what they say. this article says how the media traehes republicans. well, if they would get off their azzes and speak up they might get heard. this adminstration has trashed this country and it’s people. they have sold us out to other countries. has imbarrassed us in speeches to other world leaders and their people. but yet none of this gets reported to the people. the media deserves the “Darwin Award”, because we “Would” be better off without them in our lives. if the medias were unbiased then maybe things would be diffrent. but, they’re not. but until the republicans get up and start talking to THEIR PEOPLE nothing will get done right. we are heading toward a civil uprising in this country and maybe thats what the democrats and “their medias” want.

When I read the comments from these Democrats during the Bush administration, it solidifies the fact that Democrats are evil and hypocritical.

I agree with “johnt” that the Republican party needs to take the fight to the people. I contacted my Congress critters a few weeks ago and suggested they take a page from Obama’s community organizing playbook and learn how to take the truth to the people. Democrats are vicious and Republicans always seem to want to take the high ground.

Of course the Democrats were afraid of tyranny under Bush. After all, he was raised by communists, hung around with communists in school, hung around with communists after school, married a woman with communist beliefs, buddied up to foreign communist leaders, and filled his Czar Hall with communists.

No … wait a minute … that’s THEIR guy: Barack Hussein Obama (or whatever his real legal name is).

Lets call it what it is… the Sociopathic Party…
It’s time to get the word out and expose the association of sociopathic personality disorders and liberalism. These symptoms are exactly the description of Obama and nearly all in his administration. What’s even worse is, they recommend if you come in contact with someone with these personality traits, that you call your local police dept. because they are extremely dangerous !

    THE MALIGNANT PERSONALITY:

These people are mentally ill and extremely dangerous! The following precautions will help to protect you from the destructive acts of which they are capable.

First, to recognize them, keep the following guidelines in mind.

    (1) They are habitual liars. They seem incapable of either knowing or telling the truth about anything.

    (2) They are egotistical to the point of narcissism. They really believe they are set apart from the rest of humanity by some special grace.

    (3) They scapegoat; they are incapable of either having the insight or willingness to accept responsibility for anything they do. Whatever the problem, it is always someone else’s fault.

    (4) They are remorselessly vindictive when thwarted or exposed.

    (5) Genuine religious, moral, or other values play no part in their lives. They have no empathy for others and are capable of violence. Under older psychological terminology, they fall into the category of psychopath or sociopath, but unlike the typical psychopath, their behavior is masked by a superficial social facade.

If you have come into conflict with such a person or persons, do the following immediately!

    (1) Notify your friends and relatives of what has happened.

Do not be vague. Name names, and specify dates and circumstances. Identify witnesses if possible and provide supporting documentation if any is available.

    (2) Inform the police. The police will do nothing with this information except to keep it on file, since they are powerless to act until a crime has been committed. Unfortunately, that often is usually too late for the victim. Nevertheless, place the information in their hands.

Obviously, if you are assaulted or threatened before witnesses, you can get a restraining order, but those are palliative at best.

    (3) Local law enforcement agencies are usually under pressure if wealthy or politically powerful individuals are involved, so include state and federal agencies as well and tell the locals that you have. In my own experience, one agency that can help in a pinch is the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service or (in Canada) Victims Services at your local police unit. It is not easy to think of the IRS as a potential friend, but a Swedish study showed that malignant types (the Swedes called them bullies) usually commit some felony or other by the age of twenty. If the family is wealthy, the fact may never come to light, but many felonies involve tax evasion, and in such cases, the IRS is interested indeed. If large amounts of money are involved, the IRS may solve all your problems for you. For obvious reasons the Drug Enforcement Agency may also be an appropriate agency to approach. The FBI is an important agency to contact, because although the FBI does not have jurisdiction over murder or assault, if informed, they do have an active interest in any other law enforcement agencies that do not follow through with an honest investigation and prosecution should a murder occur. Civil rights are involved at that point. No local crooked lawyer, judge, or corrupt police official wants to be within a country mile if that comes to light! It is in such cases that wealthy psychopaths discover just how firm the “friends” they count on to cover up for them really are! Even some of the drug cartel biggies will scuttle for cover if someone picks up the brick their thugs hide under. Exposure is bad for business.

    (4) Make sure that several of your friends have the information in the event something happens to you. That way, an appropriate investigation will follow if you are harmed. Don’t tell other people who has the information, because then something bad could happen to them as well. Instruct friends to take such an incident to the newspapers and other media.

If you are dealing with someone who has considerable money, you must realize that they probably won’t try to harm you themselves, they will contract with someone to make the hit. The malignant type is a coward and will not expose himself or herself to personal danger if he or she can avoid it.

Based on this advise, what if that relationship consist between the people and the government? What does a country of 300 million do if it is being controlled by a small group of 535 sociopaths (Congress) which has total control over the freedoms the people have been granted at the birth of the greatest country and born out of the need to escape the very tyranny that is destroying it? Who does one call if the police and even the military become a part of it?
How about universal background checks and psychiatric evaluations on our politicians? Do not give up your weapons to sociopaths. It did not work well for Germany.

Aside from the Sen McCaskill, Harry Bellafante, Albright and newspaper comments, I think the other statements listed here are accurate… or at least interesting fodder for legitimate debate. (And FYI: I did not mention the Dean comment because musing that something is an “interesting theory” is hardly an indication that he agrees.)

The Bush admin assumed powers far beyond what was intended. Covert and unsupervised operations became rampant, assassinations (and other acts of war) were carried out without Congressional review (see the JSOC), the media was intimidated and manipulated, US citizens’ rights were violated and the public was purposely deceived. And Federal spending became reckless. As more people realized this, it created much of the backlash that carried Obama in the ’08 election.

However, instead of changing course, the Obama admin consolidated and institutionalized the executive powers that Bush grabbed… and expanded on them.

By merely not investigating and prosecuting the Bush admin for criminal acts, the Obama admin has guaranteed that future Presidents will not relinquish these powers and feel they can act with impunity.

Further, I expect the conduct of the Drone program and the Libyan war (among other acts) would shock and dismay the framers of our Constitution.

Corporate media is silent- and it’s not a case of liberal or conservative complicity. It’s a corporate thing. With so many billions of Federal dollars going to the military – weapons, bases, nation building overseas, training foreign guns, private security, the oil and other resources flowing from these disputed areas – the media conglomerations, some of the biggest companies in the world, know which side their bread is buttered on.

It is actually the liberals that are raising their voices in protest. The ACLU sued this admin to learn how people get on the President’s hit-list. Liberal-favorite Glenn Greenwald, as one example, is very outspoken against the admin’s abuse of power and “war” against whistle-blowers. But liberals are dismissed by MajorMedia.

It’s time for those who consider themselves “conservatives” to act like traditional conservatives. I’m talking in-line with Bush Sr’s “Peace Dividend” mindset. Speak out against rampant military spending – any legitimate discussion of excessive Federal spending needs to start there; and against the assumption of Executive Power under the guise of fighting terror.

I wish Mr Elder and others would stop making this a personal attack on the President and start questioning efficacy, budget, and effectiveness of our State Dept and DoD.

Maybe those who throw terms like “fascist” around should know the meaning of the word….because George W. Bush might have been many things, but “fascist” was NOT one of them. So….for all those proud progressive pundits out there who continually cast clueless commentary for all the world to wallow wondering what they might have meant to mean…I offer this for your education and edification:

According to Merriam-Webster, “fascism” is a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition. Also, a philosophy of government that stresses the primacy and glory of the state, unquestioning obedience to its leader, subordination of the individual will to the state’s authority, and harsh suppression of dissent. Martial virtues are celebrated, while liberal and democratic values are disparaged. Fascism arose during the 1920s and ’30s partly out of fear of the rising power of the working classes; it differed from contemporary communism (as practiced under Joseph Stalin) by its protection of business and landowning elites and its preservation of class systems. The leaders of the fascist governments of Italy (1922–43), Germany (1933–45), and Spain (1939–75)—Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, and Francisco Franco—were portrayed to their publics as embodiments of the strength and resolve necessary to rescue their nations from political and economic chaos. Japanese fascists (1936–45) fostered belief in the uniqueness of the Japanese spirit and taught subordination to the state and personal sacrifice.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds an awful lot like the current resident of the White House to me and all those he’s in cahoots with. He’s doing everything he can to undermine our Constitution, capitalism, Congress and our trinitarian form of government, with its legislative and judiciary branches that complement and balance the executive branch.
