Napolitano: Silencing General Petraeus

By Andrew P. Napolitano

The evidence that Gen. David Petraeus, formerly the commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the author of the current Army field manual, Princeton Ph.D. and, until last week, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, was forced to resign from the CIA to silence him is far stronger than is the version of events that the Obama administration has given us.

The government would have us believe that because the FBI confronted Petraeus with his emails showing a pattern of inappropriate personal private behavior, he voluntarily departed his job as the country's chief spy to avoid embarrassment. The government would also have us believe that the existence of the general's relationship with Paula Broadwell, an unknown military scholar who wrote a book about him last year, was recently and inadvertently discovered by the FBI while it was conducting an investigation into an alleged threat made by Broadwell to another woman. And the government would as well have us believe that the president learned of all this at 5 p.m. on Election Day.

We now know that the existence of a personal relationship between Broadwell and Petraeus had been suspected and whispered about by his senior-level colleagues and by his personal staff in the military, who worried that it might become publicly known, since before the time that he came to run the CIA.

We also know that when he was nominated to run the CIA, that nomination was preceded by a two-month FBI-conducted background check that likely would have revealed the existence of his relationship with Broadwell. The FBI agents conducting that background check surely would have seen his visitor logs while he commanded our troops and would have interviewed his military colleagues and regular visitors and those colleagues who knew him well and worked with him every day, and thus learned about his personal life. That's their job.

And that information would have been reported immediately to President Obama and to the Senate Intelligence Committee, prior to Petraeus' formal nomination and prior to his Senate confirmation hearing.

In the modern era, office-holders with forgiving spouses simply do not resign from powerful jobs because of a temporary, non-criminal, consensual adult sexual liaison, as the history of the FDR, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, and Clinton presidencies attest. So, why is Petraeus different? Someone wants to silence him.

Petraeus told the Senate and House Intelligence Committees on September 14, 2012, that the mob attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, three days earlier, was a spontaneous reaction of Libyans angered over a YouTube clip some believed insulted the prophet Muhammad. He even referred to that assault -- which resulted in the murders of four Americans, now all thought to have been CIA agents -- as a "flash mob." His scheduled secret testimony this week before the same congressional committees will produce a chastened, diminished Petraeus who will be confronted with a mountain of evidence contradicting his September testimony, perhaps exposing him to charges of perjury or lying to Congress and causing substantial embarrassment to the president.

It's obvious that someone was out to silence Petraeus. Who could believe the government version of all this? The same government that wants us to believe that FBI agents innocently and accidentally discovered the Petraeus/Broadwell affair a few months ago and confronted Petraeus with his emails a few weeks ago is a cauldron of petty jealousies. From the time of its creation in 1947, the CIA has been a bitter rival of the FBI. The two agencies are both equipped with lethal force, they both often operate outside the law, and they are each seriously potent entities. Their rivalry was tempered by federal laws that until 2001 kept the CIA from operating in the U.S. and the FBI from operating outside the U.S.

In one of his many overreactions to the events of 9/11, however, President George W. Bush changed all that with an ill-conceived executive order that unlawfully unleashed the CIA inside the U.S. and the FBI into foreign countries. Rather than facilitating a cooperative spirit in defense of individual freedom and national security, this reignited their rivalry. FBI agents, for example, publicly exposed CIA agents whom they caught torturing detainees at Gitmo, and Bush was forced to restrain the CIA.

Isn't it odd that FBI agents would be reading the emails of the CIA director to his mistress and that the director of the FBI, who briefs the president weekly, did not make the president aware of this? The FBI could only lawfully spy on Petraeus by the use of a search warrant, and it could only get a search warrant if its agents persuaded a federal judge that Petraeus himself -- not his mistress -- was involved in criminal behavior under federal law.

The agents also could have bypassed the federal courts and written their own search warrant under the Patriot Act, but only if they could satisfy themselves (a curious and unconstitutional standard) that the general was involved in terror-related activity. Both preconditions for a search warrant are irrelevant and would be absurd in this case.

All this -- the FBI spying on the CIA -- constitutes the government attacking itself. Anyone who did this when neither federal criminal law nor national security has been implicated and kept the president in the dark has violated about four federal statutes and should be fired and indicted. The general may be a cad and a bad husband, but he has the same constitutional rights as the rest of us.

No keen observer could believe the government's Pollyanna version of these events. When did the CIA become a paragon of honesty? When did the FBI become a paragon of transparency? When did the government become a paragon of telling the truth?

We know it was not a spontaneous demonstration which got out of hand, it was lied about, and what really happened was known all along.

So the cover has been blown on that story

Yet, they are still covering something up

What ever it is, it is something which will expose Obama to his base as someone entirely different than he pretends to be

Conservatives are concerned with who breaks the law

Liberals are concerned with who betrays ideology

He has done something which will not only cost him their support, but will cause them to actively work against him

And all the king’s give away of contraceptive, and all the king’s granting of amnesty will not put Humpty-Dumpty back together again

Welcome to the world of 2nd term Democrat Presidents. Just more valuable resources and Government money and Government life force mis-spent on investigations of the corruptions engaged in the first term of incompetent Presidents who instantly become Lame Ducks upon being elected for a second term. America will again waste energy for 4 more Clintonian years in self-flagellation and political internecene warfare and recriminations that COULD HAVE been used to alleviate real problems. Thanks American uneducated Liberal voters who again place themselves and their free stuff over the general welfare of the Country.

Could be that’s exactly why he was hired to head the CIA, The administration knew he would be OKd by the Senate and they also knew they had information that they could use as leverage on him if needed.

I absolutely believe that this is the case.

So now we have all of these institutions apparently corrupt to the core:

      The Executive Branch
      The Legislative Branch
      The Judicial Branch
      The national media
The intelligence agencies (Petraus & pals)
      The education system

And Obama is in the process of adding the U.S. Armed Services to that list.

Even many American churches have fallen into the pit of corruption and degradation (heard of “Chrislam” yet?).

Good luck to all of us even beginning to fix this. The communists and Muslims must be drooling over their impending victory over the decent who do remain in this country.

Anyone in the government should know that anyone with a Weak Leg should Not accept or apply for a new position, cause if u do sooner or later it will come and bite you in the butt. Maybe Patreaus got a contract he could not refuse. He should have told his wife himself, and then refuse the contract. Its always better to go down today (if u have to) for something u did. then to go do tomorrow for something some else someone else used you for. You always know if you have a weak leg. I agree, it appears like that is why he was selected for the job.
One-half of trouble of this life can be trace to saying Yes too quick, and Not saying NO soon enough. GOD bless Patreaus, AND HIS FAMILY.

General Patraeus is being blackmailed by the Obama administration, they control his future and his retirement check, if he does not say what they want him to say they will just back date the dates of his affair to before his retirement and court martial him leaving him with a Dishonorable discharge and no retirement or VA Benefits.

Thanks for your comment. More than likely so. When Obama canned General Stanley A. McChrystal he was able to keep his pension. It may interest you to see what that great General is doing now for an added income. I do believe it makes his retirement check look like his childhood allowance.

“General Patraeus is being blackmailed by the Obama administration, they control his future and his retirement check. . .”

I don’t accept the idea that a 4-star general who has served in the military since 1975 would be denied his retirement pension just because some fraud president decided to blackmail him. If Obama had that authority, he would deny salary and benefits to Republicans because he views them as his enemies.

My son is in the Navy, and since the election, I am just sick to think about his deployments. When our soldiers and veterans ask for help, can we trust anyone to help them? I think not :,(

This is just another example of “knee-capping” Chicago style. Petraeus was seen as a potential political rival to VP Joe Biteme, who is floating the idea of a presidential run in 2016. Politics is paramount in this administration, even over national defense, because that’s ALL they know.

He’s a purported blue collar “union” guy (wish most of us would love to see his blue collar paycheck monthly..guys dripping in cash!)…which is less then 15%-18% percent of the voting block. I can’t see a nation voting for him, even in the best of circumstances.

This puzzle is not the creation of Obama, but he is an intricate part of it. Some pretty sharp minds have gone to work on figuring it out, and some of them are here posting.
Where is the Battle Room and who are the Planners, and for what reason ? I can smell the trouble, we have had trouble, and the tactics are really good but when we do finally find out what is going on it will be total shock and disbelief.
Obama held a news conference Wednesday and his craft art of shuffle-speak went into full gear saying nothing, but it was good. The news media can take whatever he said and use it to please Obama. This gives Obama encouragement. Obama knows that he is now through with the voters so he doesn’t have to bother with them any more. Hang on folks, we ain’t seen nuttin yet.

God has a purpose for evil power to punish: this leads to great evangelism. Evil has to run its course when evil leaders rule a nation. Think how fast Christianity spread even under the rule of the Roman Empire.
Proverbs 29:2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn….
Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.

I was shocked and dismayed as self proclaimed Obama supporters stated “he has spent the least outta Clinton and Bush combined”…”that he is savings lives with Obamacare”…”he is the best economist ever by curing our markets (housing markets increasing, wall street under control and doing well”. When faced with actual CBO numbers and facts, they went doe eyed in the glare of truth and began to ramble and fall apart.

Drones…Utopian drones who will believe just about anything they are spoon fed by this type of democrat/socialist/global village leader wanna be….. willing and wanting to follow the hope and dream instead of living and dealing within reality and facts. Watching that segment last night squarely seated my mind to ‘one must be delusional and or not living in the real world’ to have voted in anyone who reigns as Obama does.

Truly opened my eyes of the every day Obama voter.

No, I don’t watch much TV anymore…even FOX has bought into the stupidity we saw plastered all over the national airwaves this past week.

I have a son who is part of the multitude of “under-30 voters” who cast their vote for the destruction of this great nation. When confronted by his younger sister on the ignorance of his position, he responded that SHE should take off her blinders and rejoice in the fact that Obama was “going to hook her up” with tax returns, free education, free health care, free birth control and a free cellphone.” …And we are NOT a family of “color”…although we are Native American, to a degree (my paternal grandmother was three-quarters Osage Indian). This generation is addicted to all things “free.” Responsibility (be it fiscal, sexual, political or personal), loyalty and discernment mean absolutely NOTHING to them.

We have raised too many generations of children, beginning with those in the 60′s, that have come to expect (for free) all that for which their forbears fought and died. Our education (indoctrination) system no longer even attempts to mask their liberal bias. To hold anyone to a higher standard of conduct, education and/or behavior has somehow become “racist”.

For Peacemakertx: I feel ya..I do. We’ve (my husband and I of 28 years and still going strong) raised three beautiful daughters. Our eldest is a teacher…who is going back to school to become a OT specialist. She’s fed up with the public school system already, in a state (California) that won’t give her (or her counterparts new in the field) a a full time job. It’s been nauseating to watch. Our second daughter, also college educated, works within Massage/Holistic Health Prac., and she too is ‘fed’ up with insurance, policies, laws, that make working within her valuable field nearly impossible. Our youngest, whose still trying to get through her first double degree, is being turned away on priority lists to finish up that last 5 (yes, five little classes) due to our state being a test case for the Obama Admins. Dream Act!

Frustrated and angry, all three girls tell us they are grateful that they didn’t fall under the delusional spell that their willing counterparts/associates fall into. What do they attribute this too? A mother and father who didn’t tell them what to think…but taught them how to think.

I feel your pain… it will come around I promise you. This younger generation hasn’t felt the slap of reality yet. Those of us who lived through the beginning years of the 80′s remember all to well the sting and slap of reality.

Best advice I can give any parent is this: Teach your children critical thinking skills. They don’t have to believe you, their teachers or their friends on any information. Teach them to research it out for themselves so they KNOW the information and reality of any topic/subject. The rest just kinda happens naturally.

My belief? The second largest group born since the baby boomers will end up moderate centrist who are fiscal conservatives with a slightly more liberal social policies than traditionally found in generations past….but not by much.

Hang in there… I have hope for time to heal all wounds…and edify the minds of our youth.

Reply to mystic: You sound like one of Job’s “friends” in your reply to peacemakertx, bragging on your own “excellent” child-rearing skills when she is sick about her son’s voting for Obama and all that that implies. According to the Holy Scriptures, when you are training up a child, you should also teach him/her WHAT to think and if he departs from those teachings for a time, he WILL return. (Critical thinking skills are important as well, of course, but that’s what algebra is for.)

To peacemakertx: I have experienced the “going away” and the “returning” of a child in my own family with many agonizing years in between. And even to the extent that we humans fail to train our children up in the way they should go, broken-hearted, beseeching prayers for our adult children are never too late. God sees our tears and “puts them in His bottle”. Obama can be both the worst and the best thing that’s ever happened to this nation, for he will surely bring it to its knees.

For Georgia: Had to read and re-read your post so that I reacted accordingly. Yes, I took a more intellectual, non religious stance in the post I directed to Peacemakertx…nothing wrong with giving the intellectual facts first and await if someone is inline with a religious equality before delving into such topics.

It did sadden me that you thought I was bragging. I stated a point in fact of raising three children. I stated a point in fact of the results of their specific upraising and where their trails and tribulation are on a environmental/work case sensitive parameter. Again..that’s not bragging, it’s fact.

That we also happen to be Christian, that we also taught by example and inlaid those beliefs along with intellectual honesty and a non dependency in believing everything you here (ie go find the information for yourself…take no information at total face value without ‘knowing’ the information first hand.) does not make us “Job’s” friends…it merely makes us real life parents struggling to teach our children the best way possible so that they will become strong, intelligent, moral and ethical people.

Teaching to ‘know’ the information is the BEST tool any parent has. With that tool, critical thinking becomes a necessary practice (even outside of algebra : }) I find this especially true within the public school arena…which tell our students/children what to believe, what to think, and imo, is most certainly highly agenda driven by the left, PC crowd who praises everyone for just about anything.

The more of us who come together and share information that edifies, works and or brings about positive change is most certainly for the betterment of not only our current environment, but for the future generations that see us talk the talk and walk the walk.

Thanks for your punditry though… all views are important imo.

    rwjacksr and mrwilson–

You are exactly right.I smelled trouble at Petraeus’s initial statement that the video was “the CIA’s best information at that time.” Clearly this liason was being held over his head. What’s interesting is WHY, then, even after he spoke as instructed did they out the dirt anyway? He’s too smart to not have known the video lie was going to unravel. So how does his resignation keep him from telling the truth now? I can’t imagine future book sales, speeches, and interviews wouldn’t make Petraeus’s pension irrelevant, and frankly, his speaking honorably on behalf of those dead men would make him a national hero–AGAIN.

Maybe we should start a fund FOR General Petraeus as a show of our support and a plea for his help in exposing the huge and convoluted tangle of lies this White House has perpetrated. Sadly, as arrogant, angry, and thin-skinned as Obama is, his machine might have concocted all this JUST to avoid exposing his gross incompetence or cowardice on that night. I am praying that Gen. Petraeus will act honorably and reveal some huge missing piece,if only for those brave men who died, even while realizing that their “commander-in-chief” had hung them out for election success. How disgusting. My guess is that Obama and machine wasted too much time deciding how they could best spin the attack, and by the time they came up with something, dug up the circulation of this video, it was too late to send anybody. They couldn’t face the press without deciding what the line was going to be. The alternative explanation for not sending help is extra hideous: to do anything at all would be to acknowledge that they were all watching and knew at all. It’s possible they decided right then Petraeus could make it stick and they threatened to expose and fire him if he didn’t. They promised to release only the documents referencing video-related unrest. It’s possible Ms. Lamb and others in the CIA saw what was coming and so did not lie from the onset, revealing the watching it in real time. They might’ve done so either in allegiance to Petraeus or to avoid perjuring themselves.

I WOULD like to help now who the brain behind the machine is though; I really don’t think Obama is that smart–remember his inability to think and speak intelligently extemporaneously?–not much there. But somebody has a very long-term, well-executed plan–apparently also with a far-reaching arm of a little black book info on almost every possible “problem” they might encounter.

As for WISHING that the public’s finally KNOWING the truth would dim the Obama sheen, or result in impeachment, or even get proper coverage by the press, it’s very wishful thinking. Many “well-educated” people and the whole of academics voted him back in (they forgot whatever they learned in Economics –Western Civilization and European History too.)And all of those NOT suffering any in this economy or NOT paying attention enough to GO VOTE also elected him again. Our only hope is in Petraeus’s testimony. There is a reason they ousted him–I just hope he intends to reveal it.

To paraphrase what a friend sent me the day after election: Obama is but ONE fool, limited now to 4 years. Our much greater problem is that we must be a nation of fools to vote him back in. It’s a truth we can’t escape. Pray for Petraeus to do the right thing.

Did you ever hear of George Soros? He has enough money, brains, and power to do about anything he wants to, to this country and Obama’s is just the puppet sitting on his knee shaking his head yes or no and grinning like the idiot he is. Soros is the man behind the party controlling everything! Watch our gas prices raise to over $9.00 a gallon while Soros controls his oil wells in South America. When this happens Soros controls everything in this country through Obama. We have been warned this will happen. Obama has already shut down exploration on plublic lands.

A 4-star general with a sterling reputation, but with something to hide, would make a fabulous CIA director for President Obama. He would have to say exactly what his boss wanted him to say and cover the boss’ tracks. The commentators (also on FOX) who say the general’s sexual affairs are none of our business must be living on another planet. I will be curious to see if anything drops out of the committee meeting tomorrow. Somehow I doubt it, but I can hope that there is some truth that will change the course of the current administration.

A general with over 37 years of service as a good commander and leader values his reputation more than his retirement and benefits together, The General if court martial’d would be given a Dishonorable discharged with loss of retirement and VA benefits but his concern is he would loose his honor as a soldier and a commander only a veteran would understand what this means, you may as well die as to be branded an unfit soldier.

I absolutely understand Petraeus would rather go through every bit of this than to betray the honorable Military. Do you think he was asked to leave because he was unwilling to perpetuate the current Libyan lie any longer and they threatened this exposure to try and keep him at his post? So when he resigned despite their threats they had to go ahead with it? I imagine he said, “No–go ahead and expose what you want. I won’t be blackmailed into dishonoring my soldiers.”? Or do you think he left and brought all this on himself for something unrelated?

“Isn’t it odd that FBI agents would be reading the emails of the CIA director to his mistress and that the director of the FBI, who briefs the president weekly, did not make the president aware of this?”

“Odd” isn’t at all the word I’d use.

“Unbelievable” is closer to the word I’d use, just like “unbelievable” is the word I USED when Obama and his henchman tried to make us believe that the terrorist attack against our Benghazi consulate was just a spontaneous attack as a result of that video.

One must think to the future beyond this one situation. Obama kept this secret until after the election. Now it is time for him to smear as many high and middle ranking military as possible, as a precurser to serious military cutbacks. i.e., the military is a bad organization anyway, so let’s get rid of it. However, we are going to need a strong military, and it needs to be saved from Obama.

I was sitting here watching “The Five” on Fox waiting on the dinner bill and finally came to the conclusion that the liberal tub of guts Bob Beckel will mumble any cockamamy thing that seeps into his weak mind to protect Obama from anything said against him. What he doesn’t seem to realize is that he is nothing more than red meat for the other four on the panel that have more brains in their individual little fingers that he has in his entire 300 pounds of blubber to show that he’s nothing but a weak excuse for a commentator and a source of easy joke lines for Greg Gutfield. Why Fox keeps him around escapes me unless it’s so they can prove their “Fair and Balanced motto.

I don’t know about anyone else but I do not believe any of this. I think the General was black mailed by the Chicago thugs that run the White House. How could a General who becomes the head of the CIA have an affair and it’s never reported when they had to check him out thoroughly for such classified information as that which he would receive. This is down right scary. What has become of our United States since Obama took office? Where are the American people? Was this last election even legit? I am certainly beginning to wonder about this election along with a lot of other people.

There are a lot of things going on that are very putrid. I am at the point of NOT believing anybody in the administration and 3/4 of the congress. No one seems to want to stick their neck out and get to bottom of anything. The only brave people are our military. When I say military I mean the boots on the ground and the fighting ones. I am not sure about the high ranking officers. I was married to one that was good for nothing. He never saw a day of battle in his life. A lot of them like to pull rank and are very arrogant. The sergeants and lower ranking officers win the wars. I am not saying all of them are like that but too many are. I don’t respect Colin Powell at all! Swartscoft, Ollie North, The Seals, etc. I love! Somebody has to have the guts to come forward and say enough is enough! This is worse than anything ever happening during Watergate. I truly believe lives are threatened or at stake somewhere in this mess besides the four who were already murdered. It is a huge cover-up starting at the top.

We need to do a lot of praying to the God we recognize as the Christian-Judeo Lord our founding fathers based this country on. Not the Muslim one. We have strayed so far from where we came I am afraid we may never get back under His protection if we don’t do it now. He is our best source of strength to keep America strong and to help take destructive evil sources down.
