Bozell: Candy Crowley Self-Destructs

By Brent Bozell

Just how badly did CNN's Candy Crowley destroy her first (and hopefully last) attempt as a presidential debate moderator? More than 65 million people saw that she is to debate moderation as CNN is to "news."

Barack Obama made a fatal mistake when he lied, claiming he'd labeled the Libya attack as an act of terrorism. The look on Romney's face said it all: Mr. President, here comes checkmate.

Then Crowley leapt to Obama's defense, declared a lie a truth, changed the subject, and Obama was free.

It was a travesty.

Let's get beyond the perennial partisan toe-taggers Rachel Maddow (touting Romney's "political disaster") and Ed Schultz ("The president destroyed Mitt Romney on foreign policy"), who credited Obama. Look at those who gave the bouquet to Crowley for saving Obama.

That night on PBS, John Heilemann of New York Magazine insisted the subject of Libya would have been disastrous for Obama. "The worst hand that the administration and President Obama have to play in this debate was on Benghazi, and because particularly of Candy Crowley's follow-up on that question, it allowed Barack Obama to win an exchange that I didn't necessarily think it was possible for him to win."

Obama shouldn't have won, but Crowley saved him.

The next morning, Current TV host Eliot Spitzer told Current TV host Bill Press that Crowley caused the "emotional highlight of the night" by declaring Romney was wrong. "I think that really deflated what otherwise should have been on the Benghazi issue a moment when Romney could have hit it out of the park. But instead he took the step too far. Crowley came in as sort of the voice of neutrality and took the victory away from Romney."

Crowley crushed Romney. Even Spitzer wouldn't defend Crowley as staying within a moderator's role.

Crowley knew exactly what she'd done: validate a lie. Time for damage control. Within minutes of leaving the journalistic crime scene, Crowley was back on CNN admitting that Romney was right "in the main" -- whatever that means -- but he chose "the wrong word" by focusing on Obama's cursory use of the term "these acts of terror." If Romney was correct, why not just say it?

Again, Crowley rallied behind Obama -- even repeating her verdict when the president egged her on to "say it a little louder."

So let's say it a little louder: Team Obama engaged in a massive cover-up, hiding and denying what it knew about this deadly terrorist attack for weeks. Even Heilemann and Spitzer admit that this scandal  should  be a "homerun" for Romney. Journalists know that the White House lied horribly day after day, and -- with a few exceptions -- have enabled that badly disguised cover-up.  Obama claimed nobody cares about finding the facts more than he does. It's lie after lie at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Crowley knows full well that it's Team Obama that needs to be held accountable here, not the challenger. Back on September 30, Crowley herself pinned down Obama spinner David Axelrod on this point: "Why did it take them until Friday [September 28], after a September 11 attack in Libya, to come to the conclusion that it was premeditated and that there was terrorists involved? John McCain said it doesn't pass the smell test, or it's willful ignorance to think that they didn't know before this what was going on." Of course, Axelrod shot back that Obama in the Rose Garden called it an "act of terror."

How does Crowley square her October 16 performance with her September 30 performance? Try this theory: after liberals savaged Jim Lehrer as "useless" for somehow allowing Obama's first-debate fiasco, they've successfully worked the refs, both Crowley and Martha Raddatz, to push back at the "lies" of the Republicans.

Journalists now know Obama lied repeatedly about protests outside the consulate in Benghazi. In a September 20 interview with Univision, Obama said of Libya, "I don't want to speak to something until we have all the information.

What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests.

There were no "natural protests." The story line had changed the day before when Matthew Olsen of the National Counterterrorism Center cracked under congressional questioning and said, "the facts that we have now indicate that this was an opportunistic attack." On the 20th, Obama spokesman Jay Carney suddenly jerked his knee and declared, "It is, I think, self-evident that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack."

"Self-evident?" If so, then Team Obama is guilty, period.

Instead, so many in the shameless media are still trying to pin the tail on Romney. They'll do anything to reelect Obama. Just ask Candy Crowley.

MSM Crowley is the poster-child for liberal MSM so-called “journalists” who probably couldn’t come up with an original idea or question if her life depended on it. when you have someone with questionable “credentials” and sub-par intelligence act as moderator, it is the equivalent of having judge and jury consist of convicted felons. Can anyone really be surprised by the outcome? Perhaps her next “plum assignment” should be interviewing Big Bird. :-)

It also speaks well of Mitt Romney’s sincerity, when he says he will work with Democrats to get some thing done, because from the look on his face one could tell he was shocked to find they would not do the one thing essential for working together, play fair.

Crowley should fall to her knees and beg for the America people’s forgiveness for her despicable and disgusting act, undermining the very process by which we govern

Recently Obama gave an interview in which he stated that during his second term “he expects” Republicans to work with him. Notice he did not say that both sides should work together. Romney had so much more class by saying he would reach across the aisle than Obama has displayed during his entire presidency.

Crowley would fall on the sword on TV to show faith in Obozo. The libs are so drunk from their years of the lefty kool aid that they could never possibly see a fault in their Messiah.

Just getting rid of Obozo will not do a lot with out also getting rid of Reid and Pelosi. They are as sick as the fake-in-chief and as destructive.

Representative up for reelection – every 2 years. Senators – every 6 years.

      Reid reelected in 2010.

But getting GOP control of the senate would strip Reid of the power encumbant to the majority party leader and prevent a lot of his mischief making.

As despicable as Candy Crowley’s moderator skills (or lack thereof) were for the 2nd Presidential debate, I’m sensing something far more sinister that no one seems to have addressed. And that is: HOW DID PRESIDENT OBAMA KNOW CANDY HAD A TRANSCRIPT OF HIS ROSE GARDEN SPEECH IN FRONT OF HER????? If you’ll remember, as soon as the heat got a little too much for Obama – he pointed right at Candy Crowley and demanded she “READ THE TRANSCRIPT”. So MY question is, if these questions were SUPPOSED to be secret, then how did Obama know she would have a transcript of a very specific line, in a very specific speech, given on a very specific day???? No one seems to be addressing this issue – and to me this totally reeks of a set up and might be a far deeper issue than Candy’s obvious non-bias leaning.

    Thanks for a great e-publication.

I would need to see a replay to confirm this. I am not questioning your integrity however. I did not watch the total debate, I can’t stand to see him lie to my face on t.v. anymore! But if this is true, and I see it, I would expose it for what it truly represents, an outright slight and lie to the American people again to cheapen our governing process!

The majority of the voters who followed the debate saw through this and see it for what it was – a conspiracy by the media and Obama to help him through what they knew would be a problem area. I believe it backfired on them. Americans tend to stand up for the underdog. It’s in our blood and our psyche. Seeing the moderator team up with Obama and lie went against Obama and people instead supported the man who was telling the truth. The media and obama had to pull out all the stops for him to be re-elected. That means they had to gamble and more often than not the gambler loses.

Fifty years ago when Mark VanDorn was revealed to have cheated on the TV show the $64,000 Ouestion, he and the show were held up to ridicule and his promising career was destroyed. Now we have a president and moderator who seemingly have done the same thing and we actually have people defending them. Have standards and morals really deteriorated that far on such a short time?

Sorry Seabee – it was from a ’69 Camaro SS RS 4-speed I had back in Michigan 12 years ago. Had to part with it to move to Arizona. The car club we belonged to chipped in and helped us restore the engine to it’s original throw-you-back-in-your-seat condition. While I know my screen name makes people think I’m a guy – I’m actually a 60-year-old granny (not from Pasadena) that still very much loves the muscle cars. :D Have a fantastic day (or evening whatever time zone you’re in.)

There was one very good point that came out of that staged debate: Romney was debating TWO opponents and he kept his cool, stayed focused and dignified. That made Obama’s “Candy, can we change the subject?” plea very childish and showed his character, lost without a teleprompter and a prepared speech.

I had to wait until I was finished with work – but I got out my recording of of the last debate – and I was wrong on ONE account – a word – I thought Obama said “Read the transcript” – he said “Get the transcript” – which Candy then immediately held it up and waved it like the buffoon that she is. So – in my opinion there was something more than just obvious bias here.

And you know – this brings up another question entirely. You realize that even if (hoping and praying) that Gov. Romney is elected – we STILL have a very corrupt media in this country. What in God’s name can we as ordinary people DO about that??? Before this progressive movement ran blue-dog democrats out of town, the media used to try to disguise their liberal leanings. But now it’s almost a contest to see which network can spread the most hate to those who oppose their liberal point of view. Any ideas? Any thoughts how to come against them?

Maybe a class action suit against CNN, MSNBC, CBS, & ABC for conspiring to purposely deceive the American people would make them change their ways. Could it be done? Any attorney’s in the audience? This goes back to cold war Russia tactics – only allowing their people to read what they’ve approved. Isn’t there some kind of creed or oath these journalists are supposed to adhere to when reporting?

After watching Hannity tonight – it’s pretty obvious now with the solid evidence that came from the ethics committee hearings – even IF Obama were reelected, he WILL be impeached along with MANY others from the State Department. Well – that’s ONE way of cleaning up Washington!
