Malkin: Desperate Dems Hide Behind Big Bird

By Michelle Malkin

Mitt Romney sure ruffled a lot of feathers over his proposal to eliminate taxpayer funding for government-sponsored TV. As soon as the GOP presidential candidate singled out PBS for cuts during the presidential debate in Denver, the hysterical squawking commenced.

Left-leaning celebrities immediately erupted on Twitter. "WOW!!! No PBS!! WTF how about cutting congress's stuff leave big bird alone," Whoopi Goldberg fumed. "Mitt is smirky, sweaty, indignant and smug with an unsettling hint of hysteria. And he wants to kill BIG BIRD," actress Olivia Wilde despaired. "Who picks on Big Bird!!! #bulliesthatswho," actress Taraji Henson chimed in.

Social media activists called for a Million Muppet March on the National Mall to "show your support for Big Bird, Muppets, PBS and all that is good." The grammar-challenged operatives of George Soros-funded Media Matters for America lectured "right-wing media" to be "more concerned with Americans having jobs insteading (sic) of obsessing whether or not Big Bird has one."

Indignant PBS, which employs not-so-neutral debate moderator Jim Lehrer, issued a statement decrying Romney's failure to "understand the value the American people place on public broadcasting and the outstanding return on investment the system delivers to our nation." And President Obama, awakened from his beatdown-induced stupor, scurried the next morning to the safe confines of a campaign rally to mock Romney for "getting tough on Big Bird."

The kiddie character kerfuffle is a manufactured flap that may play well to liberals in Hollywood and Washington. But beyond the borders of La-La Land, desperate Democrats who cling childishly to archaic federal subsidies look like cartoonish buffoons. Let's face it: The Save Big Bird brigade is comically out of touch with 21st-century realities.

In 1967, when Congress passed the Public Broadcasting Act, family options for quality children's programming were severely limited. More than four decades later, there's a vibrant marketplace for educational broadcasting -- on radio, TV and the Internet -- that teems with furry friends and information-packed shows.

PBS speaks of itself with cultish self-reverence: "For more than 40 years," the government network chastised Romney, "Big Bird has embodied the public broadcasting mission -- harnessing the power of media for the good of every citizen, regardless of where they live or their ability to pay. Our system serves as a universally accessible resource for education, history, science, arts and civil discourse."

In reality, of course, PBS affiliates have become increasingly corporatized. As GOP Sen. Jim DeMint noted last year, franchises like Sesame Street "are multimillion-dollar enterprises capable of thriving in the private market. According to the 990 tax form all nonprofits are required to file, Sesame Workshop President and CEO Gary Knell received $956,513 -- nearly a million dollars -- in compensation in 2008. And, from 2003 to 2006, 'Sesame Street' made more than $211 million from toy and consumer product sales."

Sesame Street has also become increasingly politicized. Under the Obama administration, Elmo has lobbied for the FCC's national broadband plan and the first lady's Big Nanny nutrition bill. Investigative journalist James O'Keefe caught former NPR exec Ron Schiller on tape trashing the Tea Party as "racist" and "Islamophobic." And the official PBS Twitter account sent a special shout-out to radical leftist group Move On last year for leading the government media rescue charge. Moreover, as I've previously reported, NPR and PBS have no problem raising money from corporations and left-wing philanthropists, including billionaire George Soros, whose Open Society Institute gave $1.8 million to pay for at least 100 journalists at NPR member radio stations in all 50 states over the next three years.

President Obama sneered at Romney for daring to mention PBS subsidies in the context of deficit reduction. But Obama's own Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission singled out Corporation for Public Broadcasting spending. "The current CPB funding level is the highest it has ever been," the panel noted after Obama proposed hiking yearly appropriations to $450 million in 2012. Doing away with the appropriation would save nearly $500 million in 2015 alone. Over 10 years, those savings would total $5 billion (or roughly 10 Solyndras). In these tough times, that's more than chump change and child's play.

Romney's right: It's time for government media to grow up and get off the dole. It's time for taxpayers to flip the Bird.

We have had too much of the ‘freeby’ mentality in this nation. Time for public giveaways to be scrutinized and when the ‘government’ is borrowing money to pay for these; CUT OFF all non-essential programs. BIG BIRD is a ‘fictional’ character; IS HE worth going over the financial cliff for? The Dem liberals cannot come to grips with IT’S NOT THEIR MONEY.

With all the hundreds of channels available to consumers, there is no need for PBS, especially since PBS has a strong liberal bias. It is unfair for moderate and conservative taxpayers to pay for the liberal propaganda that PBS spews out. It is time for Big Bird and the other Sesame Street characters to get off the public dole. Sesame Street will survive as it will be bought by a commercial TV network.

Mitt Romney is not throwing Big Bird into the political Frying pan. He is just doing what any Responsible adult does to their chicks when they grow too large for the nest. They kick them out of the nest to fall or fly on their own. This Big Bird is like the European Cuckoo Bird whose mother never builds their own nest but is a brood parasite who lays their eggs in OTHER’s nest for others to raise to maturity. One of the most hilarious freaks of nature to see a mother sparrow still feeding the still nesting baby Cuckoo who has grown 6 times larger than the mother sparrow. This is what has happened with Big Bird and the other brood parasites at PBS who should have been flying on their own long ago.

Great analogy…I think the cowbird in the US does about the same thing.
There are some very well done shows on PBS that I would not mind funding for the general public to view in the interest of education. I loved watching the show on Hummingbirds, for example. But left leaning shows and commentators should pay for their own shows to be aired. I am sure Soros would pay for their times slots to be sure he is heard.
So can there be a compromise on which shows are in the ‘Educational’ category, ect.? (after Obama of course, because we all know he does not meet with Republicans)

The Democrat Party bred Sheeple of dependency are products of the Socialist factories of mind manipulation called government Public Universities whose Liberal Progressive professors upon graduation, issue them sheepskins to hide their intellectual nakedness and pull the wool over their eyes. Therein reside the breeding grounds of proverbial liberal wolves in sheep’s clothing that prey upon the real people of production. The democrat party is the source from whom all our economic problems flow. Americans were not designed to be beggars, nor vultures that prey upon each other’s economic flesh, nor Cuckoo birds who letg others raise our young’s bodies or mind, but Eagles who soar to the heights of success and prosperity which socialist redistributor of American wealth Obama attacks at every opportunity.

That same former NPR exec told O’Keefe that it might be better not to take government money with its restrictions if I remember right. Why should we give them money they obviously don’t even need when we are borrowing it from China in the first place? You don’t borrow money to give to charity in your personal budget. Why should our government?

The main problem is that the PBS huggers did not listen to “why” Romney would cut off government funding; they only heard that he would. They could care less that we owe China so much and could call in the debt at any time.

The Morons with Communist/Muslim Party always leaves out the important facts associated with the PBS and Big Bird statement. Mitt said if we have to BORROW money from China to pay for PBS programing, it’s going to be cut.
Now any REAL AMERICAN would agree with that statement.
Would you borrow money from a High Interest Lender such as China to watch one channel on your TV?

Let’s bring it down to reality folks. In an American household when one is going over the budget and they see something that the income of the household can’t cover, the logical thing to do is to eliminate that item. No matter what it is, if the outgo exceeds the income, then it is time to decrease the outgo. In other words, if you can’t afford it,don’t buy it.

The federal government should do the same thing, but apparently since it’s other people’s money they are spending, that simple concept escapes them.

What I find to funny is with all the things that Romney said in rebuttal to the president, this “Big Bird” thing is all they have. Apparently, they cannot find anything other than this that Romney said that is untrue.

Well, one of the fact checking websites I looked at said that Romney’s math and timetable on the tax cuts to the oil industry were incorrect. A bit nitpicky, but 2.8B goes into 90B 32 times rather than 50. Of course, Romney didn’t say it was an exact figure. They also pointed out that the green energy giveaways took place over more than one year. Big deal. They certainly took place in less than 4 years. 90 billion is a lot to throw away on companies that went out of business in less than one presidential term.

As far as the tax break to move jobs overseas, the fact site pointed out that the tax write-off is simply for expenses related to relocating a business, regardless of whether you relocate it elsewhere in the US or overseas. The taxes for repatriating money to the US though are very real. We punish people for bringing their money back here. I also wish Romney would have pointed out all the overseas outsourcing that Obama has done. He gave money to Brazil to drill for oil (creating jobs for Brazilians) while he shut down offshore drilling here, effectively killing American jobs in the Gulf of Mexico. And what about Gibson guitar? They were told to outsource jobs overseas rather than bring wood in from Madagascar and let Americans create the fret boards.

@ txgoatlady: Don’t forget, as reported here in GOPUSA, the $8 billion we gave to ‘Brazil’ was actually for an oil company owned by one George Soros, and, 100% of the oil produced is already pre-sold to … China.

Seems everyone involved but – America and Americans – made out great on this one.

    FLIP A BIRD…TO THE BIRD….

There was a day…long ago…when the public communication network was non-political and could be trusted by the viewers…it was informational, educational, and worthy of being furnished an existence with a few tax dollars…

…it was a time when trust in our government and the administration had not decayed to today’s level…

Then…slowly it became a propaganda device for the now party of the Left which is composed of Marxist Democrats-Socialist liberals…and it became beholden…and thus it was no longer a trustworthy or pure device for family education, and entertainment.

Its demise is the fault of the creators back in 1967…they failed to govern or manage the purist base upon which it had been created….

…and then Liberals discovered it as a useful tool to mold the minds of our youngsters…pushing Gays as role models, the government as “big daddy”, Michelle as “big mama”, and that the parents were slowly no longer in full control of their children’s minds…or morals…

    Hitler did that once(Hitler’s Children”)…

Even parents embraced a state of denial…turning their heads the other way because the public communication network was a good free resource as a baby sitter….

Romney was right…to flip the Bird…as well as to Obama.

Of course Romney best be prepared for an indignant “PBS, which employs not-so-neutral debate moderator Jim Lehrer”…who will be directed by PBS to torpedo him during the next debates…and support Obama with “life lines” whenever possible….

And surely Obama, having nothing of substance to add to the debates, will attempt to mack a mockery of Romney….

…also it seems Obama criticizes Romney for not doing those things he is doing, like making jobs…incredulous…what a LIAR…he actually believes he is making jobs and that voters believe him?

As I see things, if PBS is making that kind of money off of licensing (211 million) and is able to compensate it’s CEO with close to a million dollars why are we supporting it?

I would have more of a problem with cutting funding if PBS remained politically neutral, but if they are compelled to take sides then they are not serving the public with un-biased views. I don’t care if they lean left or right, if they take a stance politically then they cease being an educational program and lean towards a propaganda machine.

I think it’s Ann Coulter who says that “Liberals don’t do irony.” With PBS/NPR as an example of unaffordable government spending, and forcing the rest of us, including Catholic institutions, to pay for birth control/abortions, misses the point. The irony is that most of us don’t give a hoot about PBS/NPR… we give a hoot about going broke. Most of us can fathom how birth control might be OK for some, but we get kind of testy when we see the First Ammendment ignored. Wouldn’t it be ironic if breaking the rules that gave us America destroyed America? Oh, I forgot, Liberals don’t do irony.

The “soul” of America spoke at this debate. The “Constitution” of America spoke at this debate. The “Bill of Rights” spoke at this debate. All these most important issues were spoken by our next President, Mitt Romney. Not once did our present president speak of keeping his “oath” to defend the Constitution of America. He has made a point of trying to dismantle our Constitution and all Americans know this very well, and know that the Constitution of America is “OUR SOULS”. I cannot imagine any American giving up their FREEDOM TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA. I cannot imagine anyone giving up their country to become an American citizen and then allowing anyone to stamp on the “soul” of America or the “soul” of your fellow Americans. Why would you bother to come to America if everything you ever dreamed you could have is taken away from you under the “guise” of being Fair? That is communist nonsense. And Americans all know it. Maybe the media doesn’t though?

These flaming liberals somehow always seem to ‘major on the minors’! There are far more important things to be concerned about. Maybe parents should be parenting their children and not depending so much on Big Bird and the TV! Ever hear of educational board games or reading to and with your children???

I raised children, and it was more fun, interesting and educational doing it myself!

I doubt that very many American children are even watching Big Bird (and his friends on Sesame Street) on a PBS station. Before we got smart and got rid of our TV my kids watched children’s programing on one of the DirecTV stations that carried all kinds of kids shows (Sprout).

Since Big Bird and Elmo are part of the Jim Henson Productions and they just pulled their toys out of the kids meals at Chick-fil-A over the CEO of the company having the audacity to state his own personal beliefs on what constitutes marriage I guess they are not only weighing in on which side of the political fence they are on but they don’t seem to need any tax payer money to be able to exist. Just go to a toy store and see what all is available with Sesame Street and Muppet stuff. Time to kick the birdy out of the tax payer nest and get Elmo to grow up. Oscar lives in a trash can not because he is poor and homeless but because he ‘loves trash’.
