Charen: Lowlife Harry Reid Should Resign

By Mona Charen

Let's play  Imagine an Alternative Universe . Suppose that Rep. Paul Ryan had said that Joe Biden had "sullied the religion that he and I share." How many days of the news cycle do you suppose would be dominated by the story? How many Democrats and members of the press would declare that this kind of religious provocation/bigotry rendered Mr. Ryan unfit for high office? Please state your estimates below.

Now back to the universe we inhabit. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, participating in a unilateral race to the bottom, said just that about Mitt Romney. Highlighting an Internet item, Reid said he agreed that Romney "sullied" the Mormon faith, and that, in Nevada, voters would "understand that he is not the face of Mormonism."

That is low, even by Harry Reid, "a little birdie told me Romney paid no taxes for 10 years," standards.

Consider the deviousness. By calling Romney a bad Mormon, Reid draws attention to Romney's (and Reid's) religion for the benefit of anti-Mormon bigots who may not have heard about Romney's faith. Reid doesn't fear such prejudices himself because a.) He was reelected to a six-year term in 2010, b.) He hails from Nevada, which boasts a large Mormon population, and c.) Religious prejudices rarely affect House or Senate races.

But really, saying someone "sullies" a religion? Republican senators should be demanding an apology at the very least, or calling for his resignation. Mr. Obama should be asked if he approves of this kind of character assassination.

It would be a disgraceful smear even if Mr. Romney were an ordinary politician. He has his faults, of course, but it happens that he has a truly unusual and admirable history of personally helping the less fortunate. His personal commitment to helping others would be exemplary in a clergyman. It's almost unheard of among politicians. We learned last week that Mr. Romney donated 29 percent of his income to charity in 2011, and that, over the course of the past 20 years, he has donated an average of 13.5 percent of his income -- well over the 10 percent tithe that many great faiths suggest.

How much does Mr. Reid donate? We don't know because he chooses to keep  his  tax returns private. We do know, however, that between 2000 and 2004, Mr. Obama donated about 1 percent to charity (he bumped it up to 5 percent in 2005 and to 22 percent last year).

"Lunch Bucket Joe" Biden -- champion of the middle class -- donated an average of $369 per year for the 10 years prior to 2008, or .03 percent of his income.

Not only has Romney been extremely charitable with his money, he has devoted his time to those (many in his church, some not) who were facing crises. He spent many hours with a 14-year-old cancer victim in the hospital. He saved a family of four from drowning when their boat capsized. When two teenagers in a Boston family were injured in a car accident, the entire Romney family showed up on Christmas Eve bearing large boxes of gifts, and a generous check for the parents. Romney also offered to pay for the boys' college educations when they recovered. He closed Bain's offices to search for the missing daughter of a colleague. These are but some of the many stories of personal generosity and remarkable kindness detailed in "The Real Romney" by Michael Kranish and Scott Helman, two Boston Globe reporters. Has Mr. Reid ever done anything comparable?

Since Sen. Reid has directed personal slanders against Romney, it's worth noting that Mr. Romney earned his fortune by working in the private sector. Mr. Reid too is a wealthy man, with an estimated net worth between $3 and $10 million. Yet as Betsy Woodruff documents in National Review, he has acquired all of it while serving in public office, and while earning a salary of $193,400 or less. "I did a very good job investing," he explained in 2010. If you believe that, Mr. Reid has a bridge to sell you. Really. In 2006, Reid earmarked $18 million to build a bridge across the Colorado River, between Laughlin, Nev. and Bullhead City, Ariz., a project, Woodruff reports, "that wasn't a priority for either state's transportation agency." Reid happened to own 160 acres of nearby land, whose value appreciated considerably after the project was approved.

Something is sullied here, but it isn't Romney.

Similar to the old saying: “The inmates are in charge of the asylum.” If ole Barney Fife was still around today he would say of ‘stinky’ Dingy Harry; “He’s a NUT.” With idiots like Reid around this country will never have a deficit of enemies.

Joe Biden HAS sold out and sullied the Religion that he and Paul Ryan share. He is a sell-out to his religion by turning his back on the sanctify to God created Human life in the womb, he is a sell out to his gender in his constant effeminate deference to the women of his party, he is a sell-out to his race in the pandering playing of his race card gamble to divide America for a win in the coming election, a sell-out to the values of a once Great Democrat Party that once united a nation, and a traitor to the Constitution he so readily turns his back upon with a wink and a nod to this President he serves so eagerly, while he abuses our free speech rights at the expense of the Muslim approbation, and he abuses his own right to free speech with no edification of any sane argument in his puerile pandering pusillanimous impotent problem solving Progressive palliatives that can only attack those who offer real workable solutions to real problems that he refuses to admit exist. I can’t wait for this Veep debate to clear air and the minds of responsible voting Americans and see Biden and his failed ideology of Socialism over Democracy be exposed for the fraud it and he are, as Paul Ryan oratorically Brooms him and his arguments and out the door of our government halls of justice along with Dirty Harry Reid and the company of his fellow brothers in incompetence.

Buck up, mbmbcs, I think Romney will win. Rampant voter fraud will be the only thing that might prevent it from being a landslide victory. These purposely skewed polls are being used to try and depress the Romney voters and cause them to stay home on election day. I agree with Rush, if you aren’t letting this negative coverage by the MSM keep you from voting, don’t think that other conservatives will. Republicans are much more excited about this election than Democrats. (Can you blame them? Who could get excited about 4 more years of Obama and his disastrous policies?)

Why suggest Dirty Harry resign? It’s a waste of “bandwidth.” If we are going to make suggestions that are nothing but fantasy, why not suggest that our infant-in-chief resign? Or the wicked witch from the West, Nancy Pelosi resign? If all we conservatives can do to effect change is suggest incompetent and evil people resign, all is lost.

Right, vote them out. Sleazy Harry or lying -0 and all his cronies will never resign; they have no honor or integrity. They cannot understand why conservatives don’t believe what they say or do; we certainly know the way they think. We can’t expect them to change their way of thinking; it hasn’t been done except for a few who changed their minds. We still have to try to get them to understand like:
“HOW To Make Conservatism Appeal To Liberals”
      1. Rule #1- do not use the terms/words Conservatism or Conservative. Rather use synonymous words, terms and concepts, like: Liberty, Freedom, and Independence.
From there present these points in progression.
      2. WE promote tax cuts for ALL Families. YOU keep more of YOUR money. Spend or invest how YOU want.
      3. WE promote tax cuts for ALL individuals. YOU keep more of YOUR money. Again, YOU spend or invest how YOU want.
      4. WE promote tax cuts for ALL charities and churches and synagogues/temples. YOUR community keeps more of YOUR money to use THERE as YOU all decide.
      5. WE promote tax cuts for ALL businesses. YOU or the company YOU work for can use, spend or invest YOUR money in and on YOUR job, hire new employees, buy more and/or modern equipment, GIVE RAISES, BONUSES, PROMOTIONS…
      6. WE promote tax cuts on EVERY sale, purchase and investment. It’s YOUR money.
      7. WE promote getting rid of ALL taxes on things like getting married or dying.
      8. WE also promote getting government OUT of YOUR life, family, worship center, charity, community, job…
      9. WE promote deregulating and liberating.
(I found this on another site)

Harry Reid will soon find out that Mitt Romney will Sully Mormonism AND our American government to the point of perfecting both just like Sully Sullenberger sullied that perfect 3 point landing of his damaged aircraft in the Hudson river. It is that inexperienced pilot Obama who hastily took off in 2008 to pilot and crash our Now damaged government aircraft into the twin American towers of personal responsibility and integrity in government. We should be proud of our Sully and Proud of the experienced Romney/Ryan team that will fly us out of this Liberal Progressive storm. Hurricane Obama has blown itself out. We now have the firm guiding star of our Constitution to guide us instead of that flared out incompetent oratorical shooting star.

I think there are a lot of Democrats in Washington who label themselves as Catholics because their parents christened them in the Catholic church. They may not agree with anything the church teaches and may never attend Mass, but they claim they are Catholic anytime they need to claim a religion. I doubt if most of them even tithe. Hairy The Reed is just another one of the DREAM BUSTERS. He like his comrades, BHO and Biden are holding up exploration for more oil so prices stay high. With high fuel prices businesses cannot make a go of it and so they close their doors and folks lose jobs. Another dream is busted. Then they raise taxes, and yet more dreams are busted as they lose their jobs, and companies have to send jobs overseas, or close up shop.

Who is too blame? All who vote for the Democrats are to blame. They have sold their fellow countrymen out for a few dollars more. They take the bribes and vote for the evil ones!

I don’t understand how Harry Reid is in office – the state of Nevada has a huge majority of Mormons. Now, if any other time, with this insult to the Mormon faith, they should rail up against him and ‘impeach’ him. Romney has been a loyal, generous and practicing Mormon and is well-respected – don’t tell me that the Mormons aren’t up in arms about the rants of Reid against Romney. Speak up, all you of Mormon faith!

It is truly astonishing to consider the disparaging charges of evildoing directed at Romney and Mormonism in general from evangelicals, the Left, the Media, the atheists, etc. To have the vitriol escalate from within your own is despicable. Isn’t there someone in the media loud enough and bold enough to scream “Enough! Mormons are fine people! Romney is a good man! Stop it already! Reid, shut up!”

Except for most of the Fox News Channel team, and Anderson Cooper at CNN, the rest of the MSM propagandists have been hypnotized by their zeal to appear non-racist in supporting the most racist president of the last 40 years (maybe longer, but I am not sure about LBJ). I am astounded that the standards of our healthcare system and tax rates are now measured by legislation that has happened since 2009, even though most of those changes are not in effect yet – won’t take effect until next year, or even 2014.

@ crunchem – It’s a matter or religious intollerance. My god is better than your god, my religion is better than yours, I know the truth and you don’t, etc. etc. etc. It’s the same thing the muslims do only they carry it to idiodic extremes. The bible says there is only one God and he should be worshipped. As for the true name of God, no one knows it no matter what they say. It’s probably three hundred sylables long and totally unpronouncable by any human language. Psalm 150 does indicate that God likes the big band sound, however.

Reid is an inarticulate speaker and a democrat minion. I feel he is the one to disgrace himself and his religion. Any overly religious person who approves of unborn babies being born are not true to their religion. He and Nancy Pelosi are scum bags. And this coming from a woman who is Pro Choice under certain circumstances but I am not two-faced. I don’t go around saying how religious I am. I do believe in God and I think most people do to a certain degree or at least a higher power, except maybe Islam. That is not a religion, and I really don’t know what it is. People should be righteous to each others and they do not promote that.

Harry Reid IS INDEED faithful to this religion which is not Mormonism but Moronism where he the moron is the Self-God person who he worships, from whom all societal blessings must flow and it is only He who is fit to decide the life and death of a baby in the womb, which waffles from moment to moment depending on which voting audience he is blessing with his presence. Don’t forget to pass the donation plate as every religious experience he offers is a fund raiser to his own self-edification.

Forget about the Senate Republicans asking/demanding that Reid apologize. None of these Republican Senators have the GUTS to even “TRY” to take Reid to the “Proverbial Wood Shed”. Have you noticed that none of them have ever shown up on stage with either Romney or Ryan at a Presidential News Rally?? NOT ONE of the current Republican Senators or Congressional Representatives have come out in Public, on Stage, with either one of our Presidential/Vice Presidential Contenders. To me, that is disgusting and shows why the Republican Party is losing support from the National Republican Citizen Population. Harry Reid is a jacka_s that needs to be shown what two “black eyes” look like. Thank you for your time. TSgt., USAF Retired.

Harry Reid is so stupid that he actually thinks he clever. We can call for his resignation but he isnt going to.

This man is a disgrace for a Senate leader and to his Mormmon faith All Mormons should be outraged. This cretin has no shame!

We need to make sure we take the Senate back. He has not done his job and it is unbelievable that for almost 4 yrs there has been no budget produced. We should not be paying for him to get fat sitting on his butt. It is high time we kick his butt out of the Senate

@pypypypy: Do you like pie? How far can you carry out Pi? Just a little diversion here.

Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and their ilk are sanctimonious hypocrites who have been feeding at the Public Trough for far too many years! They have enriched themselves beyond what we ordinary mortals can imagine courtesy of “insider trading”tips which would have put any of us in prison were we to try and implement any of those tips in our personal trades. They have exempted themselves from far too many of the consequences which would befall any one of us were we to engage in similar behaviors. They make the laws and exempt themselves from any punishment. How insane is that?

In a mere six years we could sweep clean the House and the Senate from the vermin who use public office as a personal treasure trove. That is, if we simply re-elect NO ONE! JUST SAY “NO!” TO INCUMBENTS! A new broom sweeps clean. Shove all of them out the door and start fresh with each elction. That includes Pelosi and Reid and, of course, the man at the top of the heap.

On 9-26-12, I sent the following to Dirty Harry via his website. I’m sure it was deleted immediately but I don’t care.
    ______________________________________________________________

You know what liberals are up by what they accuse you of doing.

The truth of the matter is Harry Reid has sullied himself not only as a person and human being but also as a Mormon. In fact I didn’t know Harry Reid WAS a Mormon. His behavior has disgraced the Mormon Church and if the LDS are concerned about the image Harry Reid projects as a Mormon they should seriously chastise him.

And if Harry Reid would do his job, the one he was ELECTED AND PAID TO DO, instead of targeting Mitt Romney all the time, maybe he would get the Senate (whom he is the Majority Leader of) to pass a budget, which hasn’t been done in over three years.

Harry Reid is just upset because the Mormons are excited about Romney and he will very likely carry states with large Mormon populations like Nevada. I’m not exactly sure what defines a good Mormon, but Romney is DEFINITELY a better person than Harry Reid.

Good article. We all know Reid is a dist ball. What we need to do is get out who is Mitt Romney. When they harp ver his tax returns, my reply would be “I gave 29% of my income to charity for a total of…., how much did Mr. Biden or Mr. Obama give? By the way, why does Obama have about $142,000.00 foreign tax credit on his income tax return? When they harped over Romney’s Swiss bank accounts which is reported I’d say I was going to call Mr. Obama regarding this but he was at fund raiser in Switzerland with the list of all the people that have illegal Swiss bank accounts the the US government refuses to release to the American public. :-)

Romney can’t win with the stupid tax return thing. Now they are trying to vilify him for not claiming as much charitible deduction as he qualified for. Their reasoning; he did it to deliberately pay MORE taxes than he had to in order to look good. These liberals are becoming more and more desparate as election day nears. Their veneer is peeling pretty badly. I think many of them are on the verge of imploding. No big loss if they do.

Harry Reid is Obama’s right-hand man, and he is the primary reason the Senate has been doing nothing. He is so partisan that he will not even allow a bill passed by the House to get to the floor of the Senate for debate. It’s always “dead on arrival” with a supporting “veto threat” from the White House. Reid and Obama together have hijacked our government and both should be removed from office, forcibly if necessary.

I would like to see the leadership in the Mormon Church say a word about Reid’s claim that Romney has ‘sullied’ their religion.

They shouldn’t ‘endorse’ Roney per se as that would negatively impact the anti-Mormon crowd.
But, they could say something about being less than pleased about having Reid expressing judgements such as this on their behalf.

Romney probably doesn’t really want more attention called to his religion than necessary. Even criticizing Reid’s claims might bring unwanted attention to Romney. Romney needs to focus on the economy and the disastrous foreign policy in the Middle East. Reagan somehow managed to get his message out despite an unfriendly media. Romney needs to figure out how to do the same thing.

Reid is a sleaze ball and one of the main reasons why Congress is so dysfunctional and has one of the lowest approval ratings in our history. Who would want to work with such an angry dispicable man who the voters in Nevada had an opportunity to throw out of office but were undermined by dirty politics that Harry is noted for being very good at using. He is the spokes person in Congress for the use of Chicago style gutter politics and proud of it. He will get his just dues sooner or later.

But I am certain that Obama’s church, the ‘Wright Church’, would give him its highest awards and accolades.

Because the word “sullied” is not a word used often it may help to know that it means; to make soiled or tarnished; Defile.

You know…the word used to describe Harry Reid by his party. But you must be part of that party to understand why that is a good thing. They don’t get gold stars for being logical or honest. Disgusting is beautiful. Reid is disgusting. Reid is the leader of soil and defilement. Reid is a Senator for Las Vegas. Democrat Senators put Reid in the Leaders position. What does the Mormon church have to say about Reid ?
