Barone: Obama's Unfulfilled Promise Change

By Michael Barone

"The most important lesson I've learned is that you can't change Washington from the inside," Barack Obama said in an interview Thursday on the Spanish-language Univision network. "You can only change it from the outside."

A better way to put it is that Barack Obama has proved he can't change Washington from the inside.

One case in point is the comprehensive immigration legislation Obama promised to steer to passage in his first term. The Univision interviewers, who asked tougher questions than the president has been getting from David Letterman or various rappers, zeroed in on this issue.

With a 60-vote supermajority in the Senate and a solid Democratic majority in the House in 2009 and 2010, Obama could have pushed for an immigration bill.

Instead, he acquiesced in Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision not to bring such a measure to the floor. It would require some of her members to cast tough votes.

But, with Obama's encouragement, she did bring to the floor and pushed through a cap-and-trade bill that also required some of her members to cast tough and in some cases career-ending votes.

Cap-and-trade was a favorite of gentry liberals, the kind of people Obama regularly has seen at his 200-plus fundraising events. As for the Hispanics who want immigration legislation, he's now promising that he'll push it in his second term. Wait in line.

George W. Bush managed to get congressional votes on comprehensive immigration bills. Obama didn't bother.

Obama's inability to change Washington from the inside is also on display in Bob Woodward's latest bestseller, "The Price of Politics."

He tells how in a meeting of congressional leaders Pelosi muted a speakerphone as Obama droned on lecturing members on the national interest, so the legislators could get some work done.

He shows how Obama blew up the summer 2011 grand bargain negotiations with Speaker John Boehner by suddenly raising his demands.

Boehner had already agreed to increased revenues from high earners through tax reform that would eliminate or limit deductions whose benefits go largely to those with high incomes.

That's the kind of tax reform recommended by Obama's Simpson-Bowles Commission, whose report quickly found its way to his round file.

It had the support of congressional Republicans like vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan and Republicans on the supercommittee.

But Obama insisted on higher tax rates for high earners -- proposals that tend to bring in less revenue than forecast -- and raised the ante on Boehner.

All of which prompts the question: Would the economy be doing better today if the grand bargain had been successful, and if we were not headed toward the fiscal cliff resulting from the sequestration process congressional leaders improvised after Obama spiked the negotiations?

We can't know the answer for sure. But it's certainly possible. Instead, the economy is in such disarray that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has embarked on a third round of quantitative easing.

Obama has spent about half of his career in public office running for other office. A couple of years after his election to the state Senate, he ran for Congress. He lost, and a couple of years later ran for the U.S. Senate.

Two years after taking office, he started running for president. And he's spent a lot of time this last two years -- all those fundraisers! -- running again.

In the meantime, he has skipped more than half of his daily intelligence briefings, including those several days before the attacks on our embassies and consulates that started on Sept. 11, 2012.

Afterward, White House press secretary Jay Carney, Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice and Obama himself (on David Letterman) characterized the attacks as spontaneous responses to a video criticizing Islam.

That story line was punctured when the director of the National Counterterrorism Center stated what seemed to be obvious -- that Ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed "in the course of a terrorist attack." The video was a pretext.

The video alibi was obviously politically motivated. One of the premises of the Obama campaign was that his election would make Muslims love America.

What we see in all this is a president who is much more comfortable campaigning than governing.

What we also see is disarray -- an economy that is foundering, a world where America is on the defensive and under attack. A president who can't change Washington and whose election did not magically change the world.

President Obama has been a dismal failure as President but he is still leading in the polls leading up to the election primarily because the media (except for FOX) has basically given him a free ride. They absolutely refuse to confront him about the failures of his administration in interview after interview and he is afraid to go on an interview on FOX. He, and his staff, hate FOX because the journalists and lead hosts on the FOX network ask the hard questions as well as the softball questions (which is what he gets on the MSM). There are too many voters who actually never watch a news program to understand the state of the nation and may pick up an Obama appearance on Letterman or Leno where he is on his best behavior and his charming self, and that gets him votes from the uninformed.

Romney is being demonized very adeptly by the Obama campaign as every comment he makes is twisted around to make him look out of touch or worse and the liberal media just loves to help that along. The media has helped distract the public from the dismal failure of the Obama administration.

If Romney loses in November to the worst President maybe in our history…it is a sad state of affairs for the American people and the tipping point for the demise of the America we all love.

U R right, many voters dont do themselves any favours and the BO media is taking advantage of this. 4 yrs ago, they helped BO and they are doing it again this time around to get him re-elected!

WHat I disagree is, BO is the worst President. He lies, takes no responsibilities and blame others for his is failures!

As you know the Dems are using Bill Clinton’s “you cant get things done in 4 years” as their talking points! Well President Regan was able to. so what does it make BO – incompetent and a failure. He has no desire to make things better because that isnt his agenda. Where did his apologies and appeasement foreign policies got us? 4 Americans murdered but he sent Rice out on a network crawl to lie to us, even after the Libyan PM said the attacked was pre-planned. He had advanced warning but chose not to do anything. I for one cannot trust someone like this to protect our country. The tarrorist must be having a good laugh at this pathetic man who call himself POTUS.

Where did US$70M taxpayer money got us in Pakistan where Hilary said that “the US govt has absolutely nothing to do with the film”? It absolutely got us nowhere and they just ble US$70M!

If it was all to do about the video, the violence would have stopped after the constant apologies from the US govt! The whole thing is an embrassment and it only embolden the tarrarist

      Here is the unfulfilled promise
      Current Promise= Nat’l Debt $16 trillion x1.5% Interest
      = $240 Trillion/Yr Taxpayers pay in interest
Future Promise = $16 trillion x 6% interst on Natl Debt
= ONE TRILLION Per Year in Interst on national
      Debt
When Interests rates rise like they WILL HAVE TO when the Federal Reserve’s $40/Mo QE3 starts hitting this month IT IS ECONOMIC GAME OVER for the Untied Stated. President Obama cannot make changes; people are the ones that make the changes through their representative. When we have representatives lining their pockets and voting their own agenda, changes will not be made for the people that they represent and for America. A President has no power, it is the congress voting for the people that has the power. If we truly want changes in America, we need to elect representatives that will keep those that elected them as the number one priority. Vote for them and America.

“A President has no power, it is the congress voting for the people that has the power”

And Congress has the lowest approval rating in history, but when it comes times for an election, see how many of the representatives continue to be given another term. The people are so accustomed to the lies, distortion, and deception of their representative that they just allow them to continue. We have seen enough corruption over the past four years to persuade anyone that our government needs to be completely transformed, but look at the number of people who are still “undecided” with only six weeks left before an election.

One perfect example is Nancy Pelosi. After her outlandish statement that “we have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it” and the revelation of her jet-setting with her family and friends at the expense of the taxpayers, her bar bill, etc. she still gets re-elected by a landslide. A second example would be Charley Rangel who after 17 years of income tax evasion was allowed to pay back taxes, no punishment, and was re-elected by a landslide, allowing him to serve 44 years in the House. Also look at Harry Reid, the strong-arm of the Senate. He is in Obama’s pocket, has literally choked all the legislation coming from the House, announced every bill as “dead on arrival”, yet he refers to the Republican party as the party of “NO”, and Nevada re-elects him for another 6 years, even though the people of Nevada are screaming about their unemployment rate and their poor economy.

It really is true that “you can’t fix stupid”.

I do not agree. In 2010 there was an uprising of conservative voters and many dems (litte d is deliberate) were voted out of office. The House has Repub majority and Senate has dem majority. Since Obama has not been able to get his bills passed one way, he has done it by Executive Privilege. He has rendered Congress useless and dictates his laws at will. Over 200 laws were submitted by the House, and Harry Reid, Senate leader, has killed them all. Then Obama has the nerve to say that he can’t get cooperation from the Rebublicans.
So my point is, this President has usurped the power of Congress and can basically do what he wants unless he is voted out. This country will not survive another 4 years of Obama.

“The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t change Washington from the inside,” Barack Obama said in an interview Thursday on the Spanish-language Univision network. “You can only change it from the outside.”

This is an interesting comment for a sitting president to make during a reelection campaign. It sounds as if he is saying:”Vote for Romney because it’s more fun to be a community organizer of Black voters where I’ll be free to preach hate and envy to my loyal followers and then I’ll follow in Clinton’s footsteps as an icon of change rather that achieve actual change in Washington through doing the job and compromising with those in the Senate and House. I tried with my czars, but my Car czar failed me by not being able to cover up for a little longer and Holder has not been supported by all his troops in such simple task as outlawing guns. I’m also not sure the Clinton’s are loyal to my vision of income equalization.”

Every voter should give Obama his wish and return him to his role as a spokesperson for Marxist Socialist Change and the return to the 13th century fossil fuel-free, pre-industrial poverty rather than the president of an affluent democratic republic with Constitutional limits on executive power which was prior to Obama trying to weld different racial, ethnic and gender groups into a “melting-pot” society with equality for all.

“You can only change it from the outside.”

I’m surprised that nobody has questioned what he means by “outside”. His statement and nobody’s interest is disturbing. To me, change from the inside means a political solution. So what does he mean by “outside”? Examples?? Outside covers every thing up to and including revolution.

May of us thought that his “change” mantra meant some oversight of Wall Street, bringing the races together, etc. We now know that it means a socialist form of government, trampling the constitution, disrespect for the separation of powers, etc.

Obama will sometimes let the mask slip and we see what he truly stands for. Is this one of those times?

That’s quite an analogy. It also seems very accurate. Remember when he was actually going to go to Washington and “Change things from the inside”. It was an inside job alright.
From another comment above, it IS up to us to elect representatives that represent the people and the country. Make November the last of his reign. Time for real change!

I think you are close middleground. I caught that moment of weak bored with it feeling too. Only I think bo wants to be a Hollywood star rather then prez. If someone would offer him a movie deal I think he would drop out of the presidential race in a heart beat! You know, I saw that same “moment” on Letterman the other night too. Remember, when bo was supposed to be meeting with Israeli PM on National security matters, he instead was in rehearsal for the Letterman show. Well did you all see it? I have the tape, when Dave asked bo what the number was when he came to office in 2009 he was poking fun at bo. Dave said, “wasn’t it like 10 trillion and now it is 16″? I thought obama was gonna faint. He looked horrified and did not know what to say except for “I don’t know precisely what the number was” He did not want to remind us what it was is what he really was thinking and so Dave spit it out! Good one Letterman. Also when bo was telling Dave that they could pay more in taxes because they are able to, Dave’s face was NOT liking it. I think the guy behind the curtain is becoming visible. obama will need a new job anyway in Jan. when Romney takes it from him. Look for him in a theater near you! LOL….

I only disagree with the statement that Bernanke was forced to do QE 3 ! The first 2 QE s were only funds spent for low profile but highly influential persons and also for governing bodies whom could advance the progressive liberal agenda. They did nothing to correct an unstable financial system that is teetering on collapse. If more stability is our goal these needless QE infusions must be stopped. I believe that a real long term solution is dissolving the Federal Reserve as it is not a positive influence on real wealth creation. Business needs stablity and it is myth that the fed has stability in mind. People sit in anger and confusion not knowing what the fed will do or not do and they act when THEY want to act ! This is a detraction from our financial goals of more wealth and better lifestyles for all on Planet Earth.

Obama kept his promise for “Change”; it just isn’t what the majority of Americans who voted for him expected. If the “change” was nearly destroying the United States then Obama has succeeded. I believe that was his whole intent since the day that he was elected was to turn the United States into a socialist state. He has to destroy the old United States for there to be a new socialist United States.

We can only guess what Obama was saying about the inside/outside. Maybe he meant he was speechless at the time so he was going to take a strong laxative from the outside without swallowing it and run off at the mouth while the crowd was trying to figure it out, and miss the rest of it.
Or he was saying maybe: I can’t get anything done in the oval office because of rules and that damned constitution. So what I do is get on Air Force 1 and go campaigning. I feed my cheering crowds with glory and tell them of my greatness. After a few outside trips I have turned my followers from God to Me ! Hallelujah ! I am the man from outside, caring and loving.

    In his 1st Inaugural Address, dated March 4,1861, President Lincoln said;
” While the people maintain their virtue and vigilance, no administration,by any extreme of wickedness or folly, can very seriously injure the government in the short space of 4 years.”
It is truly unfortunate that Mr.Lincoln was not omniscient and therefore could not see the damage this current administration has inflicted on our country.

What the hell does Barone mean, no change? Obama and his supporters are moving this country toward a tyrannical, socialist police state at frightening speed. The so-called health care bill, if allowed to go into full effect for several years, will bankrupt the insurance and health care industries (intentionally) and lead to total government control of health care and total control of everything we do, or don’t do (for our health and safety, of course). The flood of unconstitutional executive orders and “rulemakings” by the regulatory bureaucracy is destroying liberty, private industry and property rights at a rate where soon (if you haven’t already been put out of business), no one will be able to function, without receiving special dispensation from government. And then there is the proliferation of armed federal agents (the Department of Education SWAT team, for instance) and the rapidly increasing numbers (tens of thousands) and illegal expansion of authority of the TSA thugs (who, if armed, would be a good start on the US version of Gestapo, or NKVD). It’s all in the pipeline and without a drastic change in government, we’re going to get it when it pops out of the tube, in the not too distant future. No change, indeed!

No, Obama HAS changed things, Nazi-style. Now, he is moving the Reich FORWARD-that was the days-gone-by-Nazi’s favorite word and one of their cherished activities. Check into the Hitler Timeline and you will see Obama has followed it and made the necessary changes. No sense in worrying about what he has not done for this nation because he was conning the public. Don’t believe that? Check out socialist flags and that little doohickey that is displayed on everything to do with Obama. All of his ads, podium, signs, you name it, it’s there. Like the rest, his, too, is Nazi.

If Obama had not moved so fast we would still be sleeping at the switch. The only thing that is good about how Obama is running this country is the fact that he tried to do everything in four years instead of going slow like everyone else has. Bush was really no better then Obama, just slower. Look at the Czars he appointed. Who gave him the right to appoint them in the first place. The constitution says noting about the President appointing Czars and in fact they are against the constitution, but does anyone say anything? Not that I heard. They slept right through his 8 years and never said a word about any of this, but let Obama appoint a czar and everyone screams about it. What is the difference? The difference is that Obama has tried going to fast. He put 8 years worth of changes through in 4 years and that is just to fast. American caught him and woke up. Now if they will stay awake long enough to do something about it, maybe we can get some of our freedoms back. We are on a very steep down hill ride and there are no breaks on the train. Either we jump, or we crash at the bottom. People are afraid to jump because they may get hurt, but what they are not looking at is the bottom of the hill If they go all the way to the bottom they are going to get hurt much more when we crash.

We need to stand up to this government. It is OUR government and as such WE decide the direction of this country, not them. We have to hold them to the constitution or we may as well just ride it out and see what happens in the crash. If we ride this train out until the crash, the only thing that will bring our country back is a revolution and that is the last thing we want to see happen. A lot more then a few people getting hurt will be the results of a revolution and you can’t always control a revolution. We almost lost it last time and we may loose it if we have another one, but if this country doesn’t wake up soon, we may not have a choice of what we can or will do. After the crash, all choice is taken away and you really don’t want to see that either.

We are going to have to start passing some new laws and maybe another amendment to the constitution to get this country back to the GOD loving country it should be. Not more of this separation of church and state garbage. That is noting but a sham and is taken WAY out of context. We need to return to GOD and return to a GOD loving government. This one sure doesn’t love him. In fact, most of them hate GOD. We have freedom OF religion, not freedom from religion in this country and it’s time we returned to it. Either you are on GOD’s side, or you are against him. There is no middle ground.

mred, the old excuse of pointing to Bush is getting a little old. The fact is that Bush DID NOT appoint 32 cazrs and use them to rule by fiat and circumvent the Constitution as well as the Congress.

Also, when considering Bush, his wife Laura had ONE staff member, whereas Michelle has over TWENTY at her beck and call and she doesn’t even have to take care of her pet dog because the taxpayers are on the hook for a “dog nanny” to the tune of $109,000 annually.

Bush spent most of his vacations at his ranch in Texas whereas Obama and Michelle have globe-trotted to exotic spots around the world and usually in separate planes at the taxpayer expense.

It’s time to quit looking at Bush who has been in retirement for four years and start owning up to the fact that Obama has added more to the national debt in less than 4 years than Bush did in 8 years. There is nothing you can blame on Bush that Obama hasn’t done three times worse, and the days of covering for Obama and trying to blame his failures on everyone else needs to come to an end.

2.How can America unbrand herself as “GREAT SATAN?” Correct answer: Catch the REAL SATAN.

3.How can America catch the real Satan? Correct answer: By catching the ONE TRUE GOD with scientific evidence.

9.How long will the retrial take? Accurate answer: In the blink of an eye, i.e., like lightning or like the big bang.

I didn’t say Bush did as much as Obama, but he did start this Czar business with Home Land Security and he is not so innocent as everyone makes him out to be. Sure Obama is going overboard and he and his wife are getting carried away . She is about the worst First Lady this country has had and he is the worst President we have had, but he is not alone with starting all this mess. He is just finishing it. Bush is not the only President that has stuck it to us. With him is Carter, Clinton, LBJ and the list goes on with FDR and Wilson. They all helped put us where we are today and not a one of them is innocent. I’m not blaming all this on Bush, only stating that he is guilty of the same thing Obama has done, just not as much and that was after all my point. Obama moved to fast. He wanted everything done on his watch so he could say he finished it instead of waiting another 25 or 50 years to finish the job that was started. Obama and his wife are the worst things that hit this country in a long time, but they are not the only ones guilty of trying to take this country down. This has been going on for 100 years. It’s didn’t start with Obama, but I hope it ends with him.
