Charen: Obama's Mid-east Chickens, Coming Home to Roost?

By Mona Charen

President Obama's weakness in foreign policy is a contributor to the events of the last several days in the Middle East. Though he gave the order to take out bin Laden (who wouldn't?), and though he attacks suspected terrorists with drones, this president has nevertheless conveyed to the world that he believes in a diminished world role for the United States.

He believes in a more modest United States -- remember those bows -- because he comes from an intellectual tradition that is hostile to American power. His pastor and mentor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, expressed a common leftist view when he said after 9/11 that the attacks represented "America's chickens coming home to roost." Mr. Obama's one-time green jobs czar, Van Jones, was of the same school, showing up at a radical leftist rally on September 12, 2001 and, amid the drum circles and curses, heaped on the nation that had just suffered an attack of unprecedented savagery and joined in the denunciations of the victim. "It's the bombs that the government has been dropping around the world that are now blowing up inside the U.S. borders."

As if the U.S. were in the habit of bombing nations just to throw its weight around, or for the sheer joy of dominating and hurting others. In fact, of the last six wars in which the United States was involved (Kuwait, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya), four were undertaken to rescue Muslims and the other two (Afghanistan and Iraq) had the side benefit of liberating Muslims -- to what end remains an open question.

President Obama, the so-called fact-checkers' indignant denials notwithstanding, did apologize for the United States. The Washington Free Beacon reminds us that he told a French audience that, instead of "celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times when America has shown arrogance and been dismissive -- even derisive." In Turkey, he said that America was still "working through" some of the darker periods in our past.

At the Summit of the Americas, Mr. Obama confessed, "While the United States has done much to promote peace and prosperity in the hemisphere, we have ‚” at times ‚” sought to dictate our terms."

Speaking at the National Archives, the president offered that "Unfortunately ‚” all too often our government made decisions based upon fear rather than foresight, and all too often trimmed facts and evidence to fit ideological predispositions. Instead of strategically applying our power and our principles, too often we set those principles aside as luxuries that we could no longer afford ‚” In other words, we went off course."

Faced with an anti-American tirade from the little Marxist of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, Obama defended himself, not his country, by saying "I'm very grateful that President Ortega didn't blame me for things that happened when I was three months old."

The world has looked to the United States in vain for leadership on Iran's nuclear program. It has found a feckless and incompetent leader, whose delayed sanctions have had zero impact on the regime's pursuit of nuclear weapons. Obama's claims to have "isolated" the Tehran regime are belied by the non-aligned summit held there last month. The Obama Administration couldn't even persuade the U.N. Secretary General to skip the conclave. That's not soft power -- it's just soft.

President Obama has also signaled to the world his weakness by a willingness to risk "disastrous" (his own Secretary of Defense's word) reductions in defense spending because his priority is increasing taxes on top earners.

Obama believed that America would be more popular with Himself at the helm. He can polish his Nobel Peace Prize, but the mobs in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya suggest the shallowness of that particular vanity.

Even if the U.S. is better liked in some quarters, we are not respected. Cuba, the communist basket case in our backyard, has been holding an American citizen, Alan Gross, since 2009. Gross was a contractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development, and was distributing computers to members of Cuba's Jewish community when he was arrested and charged with espionage. He has been rotting in a Cuban jail for the entire Obama presidency, while Obama offered an "outstretched hand" to the regime in the form of eased travel restrictions and other blandishments.

Even this week, the president has been weak in his response to the mob violence in Egypt. While promising to bring Ambassador Stevens' murderers to justice, he said not a word about the Muslim Brotherhood government in Cairo failing to protect our embassy.

The mobs, like the contempt shown by Cuba, are Obama's chickens coming home to roost.

Obama can protest all he wants about how these attacks are all about some nit wit movie. The reality is that it is ALL ABOUT Bin Laden’s number two Egyptian Mullah AL-Zawahiri , who he hasn’t killed, who planned an eleventh anniversary 911 attack at multiple locations while our Rip Van Winkle Campaign obsessed President focused on everything but what he was hired for, namely Protect American citizens from foreign threats overseas and protect and heal our economy at home. I hope you enjoyed what you got from our President Cedric the Entertainer when you could have real leadership.

You are absolutely correct! ****** owns this-he has their blood on his hands. The more the details come out it is apparent that this could have been avoided. This compound had been under attacks recently-what was it doing w/o and Marines there to defend it? Guess he didn’t want actually doing his job to get in the way of his campagining. How pathetic is this guy? The absolute worst.

The aim of these protests is to force all countries to prohibit criticism of Islam and Muhammad. Muslims turn in to homicidal maniacs whenever their religion is criticized.

I think Charen has added one plus one to arrive at 3. Her analysis led her down the wrong path, in that, far from a “diminished” role of playing “World cop” for Soros’ and the NWO, Obama is still meddling.

Although Charen is pro-Israel, it would be better for Israel’s sake, if the U.S. would simply stay out of Israel’s way and let Netanyahu handle the Middle-East “World cop” routine himself.

If chickens have come home to roost, they’re the chickens of 60 years of supporting Middle Eastern dictators whose primary function was to keep the region’s oil flowing onto the world market instead of furthering the interests of the Arab people. Part of that regional peace was accommodating themselves to the existence of Israel and the dispossession of the Palestinians. As keeping the lid on the Middle East continues to drain our treasury, we can only expect more of this. Obama is correct to cut our losses lest we follow the Soviet Union into the dustbin of history; their empire fell when they were no longer able to pay the cost of the military to maintain it. ARe we going to be smarter?

If this ‘IMPOTUS’ gets reelected then you will have to have all our flags made out of flame retardent material ‘Nomex’ and all our Foreign Service issued bullet proof vests! What a Crock-Time for an Imperial visit to the Middle East by our Emperor!

Obama gave the order to take out bin Laden. Why did we risk the lives of our Seal Team for one single terrorist? I see no gain from his demise. I’m glad that he is dead and proud of our Seals for a mission well done but there will always be someone to replace bin Laden. I truly believe the intent to take him out was for political reasons only.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, Mona! When US leadership waffles, bad things happen. Teheran hostages were taken as Carter tried his meek diplomacy. Within days after tough guy Reagan’s inauguration, they were freed. If we get 4 more years of O’Blamer, the terrorists may be burning buildings right here in our country!

All this must be a total fabrication. Obama PROMISED he would fix everything by sitting and reasoning with the arab countries (especially Iran)because we know how well they respond to reason as opposed to military power. That is one reason obama is decimating the military, so we can appear more friendly, don’tyouknow, aspecially to arabs; then we can reason with them (oh yeah, and North Korea, too) as equals. If obama says it, it absolutely must be true, so this is all a farce. The ambassador and his security guards are probably hiding out in Cucamunga

The Middle East protests of this week are nothing compared to what were in for the day after B.O. is defeated in November! All law enforcement agencies in every city and town in the U.S.(…not just SouthChiTown/L.A.Watts/Harlem) should be gearing up NOW for the massive riots, destruction, fires, and bombings that will be inflicted by so-called “Protesters” as their leader is put out to pasture! Even the National Guard should make preparations and notify their members not to make other plans and expect to be called up for immediate action!

Remember marine Lt. Presley O’Banion, when acting as President Thomas Jefferson’s sword, responded to terrorism by Tunisian pirates with overthrowing the scoundrel’s government. “The Halls of Tripoli” remembers this event even though our newly taught American history may ignore it. It took the European nations another two decades to get upset enough to destroy the port of Tripoli and reduce the power of these commerce raiders.

Yes, Jefferson sent them the Constituion in the form of the battleship USS Constitution, Old Ironsides and her three sister ships whose tenets taught the Muslims areal lesson in the power of American DEmocracy.John Adams actually signed a treaty with the Mullahs of Tripoli stating that America was not a Christina nation, hoping this would calm them down and return the hostages. The Muslims perceived us as weak, kept the hostages and took more for ransom. Jefferson’s followup like Reagans followup to Carter like Romney’s followup to Jimmy Carter Obama will prove it is otherwise.

As the Rev. Wright has said, “the chickens have come home to roost”. Both Obama and Madam Clinton have done nothing to stem the spread of radical Islam in the Mid-eastern countries, and they supported the Arab Spring. Well now the Spring has sprung, and they own the tragic results. They clearly ignored the intel, conducted business as usual, and were not prepared for the reprehensible consequences.
Gingrich thinks that Obama is oblivious to radical Islam’s war against the USA. I disagree completely, I think that both Obama and Madam Clinton are willing accomplices.

If Osama’s chickens have “come home to roost” then I suggest we all cook his goose on November 6, 2012! By contrast, Mitt keeps looking more presidential every day (how could he help but look good compared to the Apologetic One?). I suggest that after we “empty the chair” on November 6, we send Osama on a one-way permanent vacation to someplace more to his liking, such as Libya or better yet, Iran. It would be nice to see what his Muslim “brothers” would do if they got their hands on him. Oh, and I think we should make it a family vacation – too bad for the Nanny in chief – she will have to forego her designer clothes for a Burqa, like a proper Muslim wife. Then they can marry off Osama’s daughters, because according to the traditions over there, they are both of marriageable age.

Isn’t it great to know we have the kindest and most compassionate army in the world. It just thrills me through and through, doesn’t it have the same effect on everyone?

Did those marine guards actually have empty rifles, and if so was it a Hillary decision or an Obama idea? Guards should be armed with the best we have to offer and if they shoot a bunch of terrorists, we can always apologize after the fact. Why else have guards?

Hillary was too busy setting Fast & Furious in motion to put the screws to Iran, and Obama was too infatuated with himself to wonder what the intelligence briefings were saying.

If we ever witness an Iranian mushroom cloud on our property, that will be a roosting chicken worth hanging both of those traitors for.
