Shapiro: The Greatest Threat to the Republic

By Ben Shapiro

The American system of democracy is under threat. It's under threat from an Obama campaign that seeks to polarize Americans along race and class lines. It's under threat from a Democratic Party that seeks to pit those who pay taxes against those who don't.

But most of all, it's under attack from America's public sector unions.

Mallory Factor explains in his new book, "Shadowbosses: Government Unions Control America and Rob Taxpayers Blind," just how the unions pervert the political system. They demonstrate how our government has become subject to the demands of an ever-more-powerful minority -- and how that level of control breeds national bankruptcy.

In essence, government worker unions run the Democratic Party. Franklin D. Roosevelt long opposed the notion that government workers should be allowed to unionize; he recognized that the ultimate power of unions is the ability to strike, and that government workers striking would be acting against the interests of the dispersed taxpayers. That was unacceptable.

But over time, FDR's clarity of vision fell away. In 1962, JFK, recognizing the increasing power of private unions, realized that government employees who unionized could build the path to permanent Democratic governance. Here's how the scheme would work. The government would insist on bargaining with unions; employees would have to join unions in order to work and receive representation. Unions would be able to exact dues from their members, and they would use those dues to elect their favored politicians. Those politicians would then strike cushy deals for the unions. The winners: politicians, unions and working union members. The losers: taxpayers, who would subsidize both union salaries and Democratic campaigns.

Democrats across the country quickly adopted this strategy. The system of forced dues now rules larges swaths of the United States, destroying the fundamental freedom of labor that should be an American birthright. In certain states, private individuals have been forced into unions -- and more importantly, into paying union dues -- simply for caring for their disabled children.

But the unions have now become the masters of the Democrats rather than vice versa. As Factor writes, "Democrats live in fear of the people that really impact their reelection campaigns -- the union Shadowbosses. ... Open Secrets reported that of the top ten Congressional candidates whom labor spent money to defeat in 2008, all lost their races."

The cost of union domination has been economic stagnation and widespread bankruptcy. As Factor writes, "Over the last ten years, the federal government has subsidized more and more state government spending, covering 34.1 percent of all state spending in 2011, up from 25.7 percent ten years before." Overall, as Factor points out, "Lightly unionized states do much better than highly unionized states." The average real personal income growth from 2000 to 2010 in the seven most unionized states averaged 7.8 percent; in the seven least unionized states, that average was a whopping 24.9 percent. Government workers' unions impoverish Americans.

There's only one solution to taking back our country. It starts by taking control of our tax dollars by booting out of office those who are in bed with the public employee unions. Only when the corrupt cycle between the Democratic Party and their public-employee union shadowbosses is broken can American democracy be restored in full.

At least this time, thanks to the Tea Party Patriots, the Republicans are not trotting out some broken down next in line “War Horse” like Dole or McCain. We have some really strong stallions in this race that can out-think, out-trot the Trotskyite Democrat Mules.

I hate to say it but when I saw Romney and Ryan together, Ryan was the one who shined! I think Ryan will help Romney come out of his shell.

Ryan is stout Presidential timber. Four or eight years from now, he can walk right into The White House, IF the Republic’s demographics have not slid so completely over to The Nanny State pocket.

Watching the two, long ago, one could see a kind of spark in Romney. With Ryan, the ignition sequence for take off is GO!

The key to Union dominance is forced payroll deductions by government employers to fund the union, whether or not the employees support the unions or support the Democrat Candidates of choice or the Democrat Party in general. The results,,,,, thinking Americans lose their right to exercise free speech, support their candidate of choice, and retain their rights to their own person property earned, but gleaned immediately off their paychecks by the union cash harvesters. No wonder they were in a panic and hate Scott Walker in Wisconsin as he put a stop to their funding and re-distribution of honest wealth which is the mother’s milk of socialism.

We did away with such nonsense in Texas years ago with the exception of government run Teachers unions whose secular socialist agenda pushes hard to manipulate our children’s minds and indoctrinate them with a collective entitlement mentality of the collective losers over the privilege of personal freedom of individual responsibility. They also attempt to remove any references to God in the classrooms, or any reference to our founding Christian Constitutional Principles, while the real teachers just ignore them and teach it anyway.

Thanks to the Unions, we now have Kindergarten teachers, many of whom are glorified baby sitters and crayon queens, making $60,000 plus salaries, Janitors making close to the same with guaranteed retirement benefits 30% above the private sector. It is total madness and a miss-alignment of societal priorities. Derelict parents no longer have to worry about feeding breakfast or lunch to the Rug rats who now pony up to the government trough, which just frees up more of their own money to by cigarettes, booze and contribute to the democrats. This whole Democrat party funding circle of life has to be stopped, and replaced with personal responsibility of parents AND teachers.

When I was in the chalk smelling Halls of “Learning”, it did not take long to see that Public Education, was another extension of the Nanny State, another insider handout at taxpayer expense. (did not call it the Nanny State then) One reason that we hear Obama and his minions scream for more teachers.

The insidious thing was that children were being lovingly tended to by Leftest “educators”. All a far cry from the Wally & Beaver world that so many grew up in, and trusted was still there. Nope Beave, it is GONE!

And Shapiro completely misses the fact that demographics are changing, quickly. I could scarcely relate to many of the students that I encountered, that they were so far removed from the America that I grew up in. Far too many, had only the smattering of English, and NO interest in the country, the State that they were in. Brilliant repopulation effort! It was sobering. THIS is the threat to The Republic!

One more thing, we are a Representative Republic. Shapiro trots out Democracy as do most people. I heard this in classrooms and it is drilled into the youngsters heads time and again. Democracy this and Democracy that. I was called into The Office, for saying that The Founders were most aware that the quickest way to END The Republic was through Democracy! That the Constitution was a framework for controlling the central government, to keep it in check, to protect the rights of We the People… . The Left, and complaisant feel good idiots, have seen to the insertion of “reforms” that create more democracy… .

When I left THE OFFICE, I was stunned. “Mister Wesson, we need less of that.” Game over, I thought.

Let’s not forget the bottom line: 20 countries outscored American pubic school (and private, too!) children in math, and 17 outscored American public school kids in science. DUH! So, in essence, we are paying exorbitant taxes AND salaries for incompetent teachers not just in kindergarten, but all across the grades spectrum. Hence, we have kids coming out of high school who can’t read, write, or add two plus two without a calculator. But, here’s the rub: THEY SURE DO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES!

Yes, we are paying dearly for less than mediocrity. When you load up classrooms with individuals that are challenged socially, mentally, who have upbringings that would make the normal human shudder, then the “building materials” matter too.

It seemed like the need for, one on one guidance was, is, greatly needed for so many kids and of course, that is not remotely possible. And then you have to have quality guidance! What a mess! None of this is discussed in college prep courses in education that I have been a party to, or have heard of. I was stunned that so many schools, were more like, holding tanks, just barely containing the chaos.

The occasional good school, the encounter with a class from the past, was, and is vividly recalled along with my advice for private schools, or home schooling. I will home school, period!

    Another Prominent Liberal Endorses Romney-Ryan

The endorsement of Romney-Ryan by award winning radio host Craig Silverman.

Silverman’s support of Romney is particularly notable as he publicly supported Barack Obama in 2008, has spent most of his life as a Democrat, is Jewish, a member of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, and a self-identified “moderate.”

“Take a nickel, give nothing back.”

That is exactly what I was told by union officials as to their MO. They have stayed the course and kinda like “boiling a frog” by putting it in tepid water and slowly raising the heat … it gets cooked before it realizes it should have jumped out of the pot.

As a former State Official, I was party to negotiations between Unions and Democratic Officials that were truly corroborative in nature … even to the point of “selling out” union members to advance their corrupt positions. I took opposition to such tactics and received a nice bevy of “trumped up charges” levied against me.

Sadly, I was a bit “too green” at the time to know how to “play the game” and they got the better of me as I tried to stand tall on honor & integrity rather than politics as usual. Interesting to note … that facility is now slated for closure after having sucked the well dry.

We need leadership, not politics that will continue to feed off the taxpayers until its too late and the frog has been cooked and the well run dry. Leave it to the Democrats and Unions … that is exactly what will happen … one nickel at a time.

The unions have lost their “value added” a long time ago and is why the percentage of workers in the private sector has dropped to around 7%, which is the arena where the need for unions orignally started a hundred years ago.

So, the unions then turned their attention to the public sector (which to me would be the last segment of our working population to need unions…it is government for God’s sakes) and our naive Democratic (or corrupt) politicians then opened their arms and let the Fox in the henhouse, and now look at what we have, as Mr. Shapiro clearly describes. Both FDR and George Meany himself (Mr.Union) warned about letting collective bargaining and unions into government.

Every level of government in our country (city, county, state, and national) are in deep financial trouble due to the outrageous deals between the unions and the liberal politicians they control.

The only light at the end of the tunnel that I have recently seen are the voters in Wisconsin that may have actually awakened to how the unions have taken control of their government, and have decided that enough is enough.

We need a national referendum to take this problem up as a priority in the various options on the table to stop the bleeding and get the economy turned around. I did hear Romney say that in our public education that we need to deal with the union control if we really want to reform our educational system and get it working so that our kids are getting the education they need and deserve. So, Romney gets it as does Ryan, but they need a chance to work the problems and we need them elected in November to get it started.

We have an illegal immigrant problem because of actions taken during the Kennedy Administration. We have an education and public employee problem because of collective bargaining of unionized public employees authorized during the Kennedy Administration. We have a less competent civil service because we dropped the performance tests required for permanent employment. We have zero based budgeting that guarantees ever increasing government spending. We have Entitlements that are excluded from the budget because they are promises. We have individuals, corporations and government organizations that believe they should be bailed out by taxpayers because they were promised benefits. We have groups of citizen’s who believe they are owed special considerations because of historic wrongs suffered by their ancestors. We are trying to peddle one-person-one-vote democracy to the World when our style of government was and still is a republic. We have entire libraries filled with directives, codes, edicts and other actions of dozens of government agencies at several levels that increasingly rule our nation.

It is easy to understand why there is a call to return to the simplicity of our original Constitutional government where the foundation was the responsible citizen who had a moral gyroscope guiding their actions and behavior. The problem is that the institutions that traditionally developed and guided that moral gyroscope were family, church and community, all of which have become ineffective under the pressure of compassion-guided Socialism and state-run education.

Education should expose students to the many aspects of humankind’s vast spectrum of knowledge and skills, but somehow that simplicity, like an individual’s moral gyroscope, have become subverted and de-focused by propaganda and compassion.

The government unions are bankrupting our states with huge pension liabilities and low cost medical benefits given to union employees. Government unions do not contribute to our national well being, but only serve to drive up salaries and pensions that the taxpayers have to foot. Bargaining rights are a joke since the Democrats will always cater to the unions in order to reap huge campaign donations. Wisconsin’s governor recently won a victory over the unions and the result has been to lower costs and relieve the state from its previous multi-million dollar deficit to a current surplus. Our country needs to learn from this before we turn into Greece.

The unions involved with the Obama administration have caused chaos in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and elsewhere paying protesters to harass those they oppose even in their neighborhood or front yards. The unions worldwide are causing the bankruptcies in ever state, city and country in America and then they strike in Chicago during the school year for a 20% raise in pay. The unions must be stopped and the NLRB must be abolished or reformed with honorable members who are non-partisan.A well-run congress would not need the NLRB , the EPA, or most of the Departments they could do the work themselves if we demanded they actually work and not waste 90% of their time. Stay in Washington for 6 months at work and they could accomplish wonders and if they do not perform we oust them.
