Elder: No Tolerance for Chick-fil-A but Tea Party Critic Morgan Freeman Gets a Pass

By Larry Elder

Chick-fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy faces a consumer protest for expressing his opposition to same-sex marriage. Fair enough. Offended, the Democratic mayors of Boston, Chicago and San Francisco threatened to prevent the Georgia-based fast-food company from operating in their cities!

Whether for or against same-sex marriage, what part of the First Amendment do these radical mayors not understand? The First Amendment is about preventing  government  from infringing on political speech. This is a clear-cut case of suppression and punishment of Cathy's right of free speech.

In an interview picked up by the Baptist Press, Cathy told the Biblical Recorder that he operates his business on Christian principles, including closing on Sundays. About gay marriage, he said: "I think we're inviting God's judgment when we shake our fist at him, you know, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.' And I pray on God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try and redefine what marriage is all about."

Even worse for critics, Chick-fil-A donates millions to WinShape, which regularly contributes to conservative pro-traditional marriage groups like Focus on the Family.

Polls show Cathy's view of same-sex marriage is held by at least half the country. And voters, when given a chance to vote on the issue, have consistently voted against same-sex marriage, including those in liberal states like Oregon and California. Voters in 31 states have approved measures defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

As recently as 90 days ago, Cathy and President Barack Obama shared the same view. During the 2008 presidential debate hosted by Pastor Rick Warren, Obama explained: "I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian -- for me -- for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God's in the mix. ... I am not somebody who promotes same-sex marriage."

But today, Obama's three-months-ago position makes one a homophobe.

About Cathy, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff, said: "Chick-fil-A's values are not Chicago values. They're not respectful of our residents, our neighbors and our family members. And if you're gonna be part of the Chicago community, you should reflect Chicago values."

Not consistent with "Chicago values"?

Anti-Semitic Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan recently offered to help police high-crime areas of Chicago in the wake of an uptick in murders. Mayor Emanuel accepted Farrakhan's assistance. Has the mayor heard Farrakhan's views on gay marriage? After criticizing Obama as "the first president that sanctioned what the scriptures forbid," Farrakhan condemned homosexuality as a "sin, according to the standard of God." To politicians, he said, "If the book is no good, what the hell are you using it for to take an oath of office to uphold, not the Bible, but the Constitution?"

So, zero tolerance for a white critic of gay marriage, but not for a black critic? One is almost tempted to accuse Mayor Emanuel of ... racism! Even Chick-fil-A's opponents admit they find no instance where the company denied service to a customer, refused to hire someone because of sexual orientation or fired someone for being gay.

Microsoft and Apple, to name a couple, donate to pro-gay-marriage groups. Should opponents of gay marriage find the companies' stance on marriage so offensive that they, too, launch consumer boycotts?

Liberals sure expect tolerance from others, don't they? Take the Olympics.

One of the co-hosts of the London Olympics is the smooth, relaxed veteran Bob Costas. But on his radio show in 2007, Costas went hard political. He said it was an "inescapable fact" that President George W. Bush had a "tragically failed administration": "I think it is now overwhelmingly evident, if you're honest about it, even if you're a conservative Republican, if you're honest about it, this is a failed administration. And no honest conservative would say that George W. Bush was among the 500 most qualified people to be President of the United States." Nice.

Actor Morgan Freeman voices the Visa commercials running during the Olympics. But Freeman recently blasted the tea party as "racist": "The tea partiers who are controlling the Republican Party ... their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What underlines that? Screw the country. ... We're going to do whatever we can to get this black man out of here. It is a racist thing." Sweet.

Yet those offended by Costas and Freeman are expected to show tolerance and open-mindedness, despite the attacks on Bush and the GOP-embraced tea party. The same expectation of tolerance for the views of others, however, does not extend to Chick-fil-A and the issue of gay marriage.

There is good news for the company. Cathy's comments, when the dust settles, might actually help business. A SurveyUSA poll conducted for KABC in Los Angeles finds the numbers of people who intend to buy Chick-fil-A -- as a result of the controversy -- outnumber those who refuse to buy.

It seems that America's tolerance for intolerance goes only so far.

Should we have supported tolerance with many in the southern States joining or agreeing with the methods of that so-called (at least by them) religious KKK? Or when many southern States not to long ago passed laws making it illegal for whites and blacks to marry? Or for that matter, should we have tolerated the Nazi’s? There of course is a line somewhere, but in some cases it may be a fine line. I’m not sure where to draw it although it may be somewhere in denying rights to others. Family values may mean different things to different folks.

wathen – your analogies are just wrong on so many fronts. What is it about freedom of speech that you don’t understand? CEO Cathy and Chick-fil-A are not lynching gays… they are not denying them service or employment. An American citizen is expressing his personal views on a controversial issue. We legislate “actions” in this country, not “thought”. The idea that Government officials would threaten to use the power of their offices to stifle freedom of speech (or religion) should scare the hell out of us ALL.

The term ‘tolerance’ always means letting liberals do things their way without criticism.

‘Compromise’ always means the conservative side must give up something in order to ‘meet the liberals half way’ because the liberals always ask for twice as much as they hope to get.

That’s only half right. The liberals don’t compromise at all. We’re the ones giving in.

While Costas and Freeman have a special talent they use to make a nice living, I doubt that they have much more than
superficial knowledge of the political dynamics. So they can say what they like , but I doubt many give it much worth.
    Aren’t the Olympics great!

Chicago values under Democrat rule Obviously do not represent Chick-fil-A’s values or the 80% of Americans who believe there is a God,,,and it is NOT THEM.

    Chicago Values:

Espousal of “gender-free marriage.” Approval of state-sponsored homosexual unions. Marriage as defined between one man and one woman existed long before Christ called together his first disciples two thousand years ago and well before the United States of America was formed two hundred and thirty six years ago. Neither the Church nor the state invented marriage, and neither can change its nature. Jesus affirmed this understanding of marriage when he spoke of “two becoming one flesh” (Mt. 19: 4-6). Was Jesus a bigot? Could Jesus be accepted as a Chicagoan? Not under the Rahm Emanual or Obama administrations……SO why does ANYONE who dwells inside the city limits of Chicago that defines themselves as Christian vote these devils into office?

I wonder where Romney’s voice on this matter is…I haven’t heard ffrom him…

As far a Morgan Freeman is concerned, or any other Hollywood actor…I marvel at their arrogance and since of self-importance….look, they constantly live in never-never land, and they begin to believe their own “press releases”…

America, a little bit of “make-believe” is good for the soul…but we are smarter than that, and we should be insulted when a bunch of liberal misfits, such as the Democratic Party, Obama and administration, and Hollywood mis-fits think we are “like them” mentally and intellectually…

And to those of you who believe Hollywood is REAL…I am ashamed for you…and sorry at the same time because I know you can’t help it, that your intellectual and moral compasses are a defect of birth…

The Morgan Freemans, the ALec Balwins, the Rosy O’Donnels and Helen Dengeneres’s the Oprah Winfreys,,,these are the people of the child abused class of the emotionally walking wounded and liberally molested who know nothing but the paridigm of being used and molested mentally and physically. They have no concept of Christian wholeness, integrity and rational sound thinking and their secular liberal attitudes which degrade them are just manifestations of their upbringing, which is the upbringing they would impose on our children of integrity so that they and their kind can “FIT IN” and no longe feel like the abused victims that they are.

to joelinpdx: We are under the LORD’s judgment, thank God, for killing innocent babies; nothing else matters (read Ezekiel 33).
to walthen: the Southern states fought for states’ rights and tragically lost. The result is the latest edition of the a linclown administration of CENTRALISED TYRANNY/american EMPIRE. CGRETIRED has it right: We are the problem because of apathy. There is only one solution left us (but we must act now): SECESSION and NOW!

A friend, myself and our wives decided to go to Chic-Fil-A for lunch. We decided to go early to beat the crowd and got there at 11 AM. We didn’t get out until 12:30. The parking lot was full and we had to park in the shopping center lot. The drive thru was 2 lanes wide and backed up into the street. For inside purchases, the line came out the door and down the sidewalk around the building and then doubled back on itself.

I guess Chic-Fil-A just can’t wait for Roseanne Barr to make some more filthy comments.

Good comments Mr. Elder but could we now get the discussion back to the subject that truly matters…THE ECONOMY. Obozo and his buddies in the MSM want us to be talking about anything but jobs and the economy because they know that is the subject that will send Obozo packing in November. We cannot afford to let the discussion drift to issues that don’t really matter while letting the real issues in the election slide.

The subject that truly matters is FREEDOM. When we have that, the economy will take care of itself. The economy is being choked off because our freedom is being choked off.

Actually, this whole Chick-fil-A is about the economy. They have a business. Boston, Chicago, D.C. and a municipality in California have key city officials who want to deny Chick-fil-A business licenses base on the fact that a CEO was asked a question about marriage in an interview, and answered it truthfully.

Unfortunately, for the mayors of above listed cities, they may have violated the Federal Anti-discrimination Act by publicly stating the company was “not welcomed” in their towns/cities. That translates directly into no jobs for the local residents. It also may mean that the various cities may be sued big time in court, which means that the residents of those cities will end up paying more in taxes. A suit has already been filed in Chicago against an Alderman and the Mayor. I hope there are more to come.

And of course, there’s Adam Smith, who video taped himself harassing an employee at the drive thru window when he got his cup of “free” water. He posted the video, it went viral. Guess who lost his job as a Chief Financial Officer of a medical company? There’s a question as to whether or not the University of Arizona will continue to employ him. That was one of the more expensive cups of water I’ve ever seen, but hey, actions have consequences.

Interestingly enough, Chick-fil-A ended up making money hand over fist because people went out to support them. And if half the people that said they would continue to patronize Chick-fil-A continue to do so on a regular basis, their customer base may have actually doubled and possibly tripled. That translates into more jobs.

So it’s all about the economy. Just follow the money.

Thank you for pointing out the hypocrisy of Obama can say it, but Cathy can’t.

It really doesn’t get much more obvious than that. Anyone who is incapable of seeing or unwilling to acknowledge the impropriety of such hypocrisy has no business being in any kind of leadership role to guide or influence our country.

Our country is always going to have a mix of people who are divided upon such Godly perspective issues. That will never change, but our Constitution is constructed to allow for such latitude of opinion and perspective. Denying that latitude for one, while supporting it for others is a hypocrisy that is anti-Constitutional.
