Parker: Entrepreneurs, not politicians, build prosperity

By Star Parker

I think it's a sport for President Obama to make outrageous statements like "If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen" -- which he said in a recent campaign stop in Roanoke -- and then watch Republicans go predictably bananas.

Certainly the multimillionaire business supporters of the president on Wall Street and in Hollywood know this is absurd. Anyone with the mildest understanding of business and capitalism knows this is absurd.

Yet the president struck at the heart of what makes capitalism tick -- individual freedom and personal responsibility -- without his polling numbers in the week that followed budging. His re-election probability on Intrade.com actually ticked up 2 1/2 points.

Our country is reaching a dangerous critical mass at which those who have enough stake in big government -- whether they are employed by it, collecting benefits from it or getting business favors from it -- are persuading people that political protection commands a higher premium than freedom.

If Americans want prosperity, we need a grand reawakening to the incontrovertible fact that its source is entrepreneurs unfettered by meddling politicians.

Apple Inc. is now the most valuable company in the world. Its recent stock price puts its valuation at about $560 billion, more than $150 billion more than America's biggest oil company, Exxon Mobil Corp.

In 1997, when Steve Jobs returned as CEO of Apple, the company was worth less than $3 billion, about a half a percent of what it is worth today. Estimates then were that Apple was several months away from bankruptcy.

John Lilly, a former Apple employee, now a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, blogged memories, after Jobs' death, about a talk that Jobs gave to employees shortly after his return. Apple was losing money, its stock was languishing, there were rumors about the company being acquired, and Jobs was asked about a suggestion that the company should just shut down.

He concluded his response with "If you want to make Apple great again, let's get going. If not, get the hell out." The blogger continues, "I think it's not an overstatement to say that just about everyone in the room loved him at that point, would have followed him off a cliff if that's where he led."

In the following year, according to the account in Walter Isaacson's recent book about Jobs, 3000 employees were laid off and Jobs reviewed Apple's entire product line, pruning it from 15 products to four.

Now Apple is the most valuable company in the world, with innovative products no one would have dreamed of in 1997.

In September 1997, Apple had 8,437 full-time employees.

Today, according to its website, Apple has 70,000 employees worldwide, of which 47,000 are in the United States. The company estimates that 514,000 jobs have been created as result of employment at Apple, at companies supported by Apple and the economy created by Apple products.

Suppose, when Jobs revamped and shrunk Apple's product line, he needed employees to vote in order to get rid of each product. It, of course, would have been impossible.

But this is what we have when government goes where it doesn't belong -- getting into businesses like providing retirement services, health care, housing and education. Even if programs work for a while, times inevitably change. Businesses can adjust. Government can't. Changing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public education and government housing policy today is about politics, not good economic decisions.

So we're stuck pouring billions we don't have into programs that don't work.

Capitalism is not about being "on your own," as we hear so often from liberals. It's about entrepreneurs, like Jobs, being free to create prosperity by serving their fellow citizens with innovative ideas and products.

And it's about government doing its proper job -- protecting life and property -- so this can happen.

    Someone needs to tell President Obama,,,,,,when it comes to this American Country, you secular Liberals did not build it, you definitely did not make it happen, your socialist collectives of losers who have created the modern American economic and moral nightmare did not create the American dream, but it was built one success story at a time by individuals who chose to live in the freedoms and empowerment of the concepts of their own individual self worth which cumulatively enlarged the soul of America in success,,,,,a success which your cumulative collective of losers seek to steal and grab credit for at every twist and opportunity that your deceptions can take advantage of. You would seek to steal our capital through your oppressive government sanctioned taxation because it is our hard earned capital that is the very thing that sustains us in our freedoms to operate independent of the dependency you would impose on the souls of our nation.

      If a person has been the recipient of the affirmitive action movement, and has been repeatedly given breaks due to his/her minority status, they are correct in saying they have built nothing themselves. This type of person has not had to legitimately compete. Perhaps this has contributed to the number of folks with their hands out for assistance.

    Once again Star Parker has managed to hit the nail on the head. She has truly become a Star among conservative commentators. She has the ability to grasp and explain conservative concepts that even a progressive should be able to understand, that is if there is any intellectual honesty present among progressives.

    Her ability to get to the bottom line of liberal arguments and point out their absurdities have made her a national treasure. I can only hope that her opinions get as much exposure in the media as possible, however I won’t hold my breath to see her next appearance on the main stream media.

    Electing a clueless socialist to the presidency is sheer lunacy. Its not that the Kenyan squatter has no idea what drives an economy, there isn’t a dimocrat voter that knows what it takes to start up and operate a business. Or, they just don’t care, as long as someone will steal some of the profits and share it with the lazy and stupid. We could actually get to the point of damage where it will be impossible to get new business off the ground, if the gubberment s-u-c-k-s enough capital out of the system and redistributes that to non producers. Also, just printing more money is going to prove disastrous. Seems everything this fraud does is on the wrong side of business, probably NOT a complete accident…

      Your commentary would carry more weight if you didn’t stoop to lines such as”…the Kenyan squatter has no idea what drives an economy, there isn’t a dimocrat voter…” It always saddens me when I see these kinds of personal attacks that don’t help in advancing the conservative view, please leave such childishness to the liberal progressives who rarely can open their mouth without such attacks on conservatives.

      Definition of Squatter – To occupy a given piece of public land in order to acquire title to it. In case you haven’t noticed, Obama has been quatting on our public funds and spending it and funds we don’t have as if he has acquired title to it and the honest earned capital of American Citizens. He also is half Kenyan. I like you are saddened,,,,when the uglyness of the truth is revealed.

    Obama should never be allowed to live down those stupid remarks. There is no defending his idiotic logic. If it were true that government infrastructure is key to building a successful business, then why do some people succeed while others fail when they all have equal access to the infrastructure?

      Star Parker,
      you stated exactly how it’s done. This country was built on the ingenuity of the individual to get it done. Be it building a company or providing for his/her family.Farms were the first things worked and government had no part except to protect it’s citizens from foreign and domestic powers that wanted to destroy it.The very idea that governmenthad a part is assinine and an overreach of power

    Our country has really almost gone upside down, hasn’t it? We are at the tipping point where there are almost more “takers” then “makers” in the country. More people taking taxpayer money then there are taxpayers. Much more government spending then revenue coming into government at all levels. We are beginning to see more cities that are being forced to declare bankruptcy as a way to “reset” their balance sheets. We now have 1 out of 7 Americans receiving food stamps. Unemployment understated at a stubborn 8.2%. More and more Americans living off of government subsidies. More and more government dependency.

    Our government(s) continue to behave as though none of this is anything to worry about as “somehow” this situation will magically “self fix” . It is a form of insanity to continue to do the same things and expect the results to be different. Or, is it intentional? Is creating a dependent society by design?

    Unsustainable public service salaries and benefits, which is the single largest financial problem every level of government is facing, is a direct result of collusion between liberal politicians and public service union leaders that has basically gone unrestrained and poorly managed for years.

    The entitlement programs (Medicare, SS, Medicaid, and Obamacare) designed and managed by government is the single largest unsustainable financial liability at the national government level.

    Basically, every government social program (there are so many that I couldn’t list them all here) continue to grow each year and suck more and more taxpayer money. This is typical big government which only knows how to spend money, not save money. It is not in the DNA of government, which is basically a monopoly in every service it provides, to behave cost effectively or competitively, like a private company.

    Where is this leading? Somewhere down the line, this house of cards is going to fall. This country has allowed itself to be taken over by irresponsible politicians with their highest priority being their own self interests, not the best interests of the country at large. Why have they allowed this untenable and utterly irresponsible situation to deveop in this country?

    Where are the responsible government leaders that we can trust to be adults and do the hard things necessary to turn around this insane rush to some form of insolvency that no one knows what the ultimate impact will be on our country and people?

    The Obama administration is flailing around and has just made matters across the board worse. It should be obvious to everyone that we need to change out the Whitehouse in November.

    But we have a huge national crisis beyond the mess, we are currently experiencing, lingering in the background. To me, this may be one of those critical, “defining” points in our history for America.

    It remains to be seen if our population at large will respond in a “national” way where we all rise above personal interests and bond together to bring our situation back from the brink of disaster. Can enough voters, for example, throw out those politicians that are perpetuating policies that are taking the country down in the elections this November?

    Our current President has no intention to taking part in The Foundation, even making it happen for Consumer’s and Job Seekers. It is unfortunate that we have such a President whom fails to respond to the many comments I have made too him about The Foundation. Even when he controls the members in The White House their neglect hurts Consumer’s the longer it takes to establish The Foundation. America has no foundation which would concern itself with needs of Consumer’s, Obama would call it a welfare but he maintains that “YOU DID NOT MAKE THAT” as his theme for his campaign, this hurts Entrepreneurs whom really need a starting point, many have been employed by companies that cannot handle their input and that is why we need The EVFCF Foundation. I cannot support our President based on his neglect for what we all need. He is not just being Ignorant but als Stupid. As many have complained as I have of his comments. He failed to understand that import/export exists because of the world need by International concerns. Obama does not know how to create business other than what he failed to understand when he was a lawyer while both he and his wife lost those credentials having to turn them over for having told lies. He got elected by people whom did not care about America nor that a man told lies to them so them kept giving him money and his profits have grossed him more than millions of dollars. It is ironic that Obama even got recognized to be a state Senator of Illinois because of his lack of credentials which he continues to refuse to release. Why American’s have little care of others is beyond reason, when we all should be concerned about our government spending they should realize that what Obama spent was not accomplishing anything even the Obamacare is a failure to many states and he says the state don’t have to accept it and many will never accept it. Our President lost the support of International backers and has been on a spin that discredits Entrepreneurs whom build business and make jobs as would the Canadian Oil Pipeline into America that the White House and he denies jobs to American’s. It is clear to me we need another President and the only person that qualified is Mitt Romney that stands against Obama and Obamacare. Even if many black people do not believe they need a new healthcare they can’t release the opinion Obama gave them and refuse to back Romney. Obama believes in all heart that everything that exists has already been accomplished and you do not need to consider anything else so the Entrepreneurs which would love to help Consumer’s are being lied to when they cannot stand by The Foundation and it is clear to me Obama isn’t and will never even if it meant jobs for his daughter’s husbands one day his fear of the inevitable is tremendous and he can’t get over a future where he would not be a part of. Our nation is suffering from to much tax and little other means to pay ever increasing bills, even nursing homes are trying to keep open by asking support from those whom are in them, they are threatened by laws and regulations and that don’t surprise me any at all. Most have four beds in two rooms joined by a bathroom which has no vent to the outside so when one person goes to the bathroom another room is exposed to the stench and it floods the hallways.. When elders get in poor health they cannot walk, the many (100+) wheelchair users are taking at least an hour to go to the lunchroom, the many that cannot get out of bed adds to the confusion each time they are to eat a meal. Obama isn’t a gatherer of information and don’t walk the talk as he should. He’s proud to be a blackman to a small extent but weary eyed at helping those whom have nothing to give back, expecting everyone to buy Healthcare Insurance even if they did not need it so that its funding would make nursing homes not bankruptable. The meals get worse each day, the ordeal Alzheimer’s & dementia patients are not improving because they cannot change their destination and all they really need s to be cared for by relatives and friends at home if they have no family. What Obama forgot is that he once was a terrorist working with William Ayers whom became a professor at a University before Obama got married and thought to swing from work with a real estate tycoon in Illinois to endorse his campaign to become a Senator, he planned to walk out without accomplishing anything in Illinois politics and attempt to screw Democrats out of their legit Clinton campaigner causing a very bill bill to occur when she lost voters to him while he had promised to pay off those campaign expenses she had he has never done that. How can anyone forget Obama was a terrorist planning to throw fire bombs onto government building and no telling what else with Ayers. It was plain as day he should never have been considered entering politics, many of his friends have become prisoners. How does he explain to his daughters that they would be nothing had it not been for he and Michelle falling in love, having sex, and producing daughters – that roadway seems cleared many years ago as Obama went from being a street terrorist to a father, the words of wisdom didn’t come from his father.

    The old adage, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire” is very true indeed. In the case of Obama, he is the most untrusted and hated president in American history. Why is that? The answer depends on which side you ask.

    But this truth remains …. whatever it is, there is a reason. Mr. Obama brought it upon himself for being such an in-your-face liar. From the time he was elected until the GOP took control back in Congress, he quietly signed many presidential proclamations giving him the right to have total control of ALL facets of American economy, education, and policemen …. without sharing any of that control with anyone (the same as a dictator) and he also made it illegal for Congress to even investigate it until it has been in place for over 6 months!

    If you doubt that, Google it for yourself to see the proclamations he has signed. But don’t just say “it ain’t so” and thereby proving yourself to be ignorant. Search it so you will know for sure!

    When put in context, it sounds SO much different …
    “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. ”

    In other words, you didn’t build those ROADS AND BRIDGES that your business uses (or the internet or the education system). Somebody else made all that infrastructure happen.

    And somebody else put in place the police and the fire fighters. Somebody else built up the legal system to enforce the patents and copyrights and contracts.

    I’m no fan of Obama, but if you are going to attack him, stick to attacking his actual positions, not some out-of-context quote.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    And yes, Apple is a wonderful success story. Steve Jobs personally made a tremendous impact on that company. But for every “Apple”, there is an Enron. There is a WorldCom. There is a Bernie Madoff. These are ALSO examples of “entrepreneurs unfettered by meddling politicians.”
