Malkin: The Worst Sheriff in America

By Michelle Malkin

There are many heroes who showed indomitable courage and grace under fire during this weekend's horrific Tucson massacre. Blowhard Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik was not one of them.

If the White House has any sense, President Obama will stay far away from the demagogic Dupnik and his media entourage when he visits Arizona on Wednesday to memorialize the victims. Indeed, if the White House is truly committed to unifying the country, it will explicitly disavow Dupnik's vulture-like exploitation of the shooting rampage.

Within hours of the bloody spree, Dupnik mounted more grandstands than a NASCAR tour champion. A vocal opponent of S.B. 1070, the popular state law cracking down on illegal immigration, Dupnik immediately blamed Arizona for becoming a "mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

To date, there is no public evidence that accused shooter Jared Loughner was in any way motivated by the national rancor over illegal immigration and the Arizona law (though open-borders extremists from the Justice Department on down most certainly wish it were so). When he complained about non-English speakers, Loughner's nonsensical diatribes were aimed at illiterates in general -- not illegal aliens -- and "grammar control" by the government.

No matter. Dupnik vehemently singled out "people in the radio business and some people in the TV business" like Rush Limbaugh for creating the New York Times-patented "Climate of Hate." Sounding more like an MSNBC groupie (which, surprise, he confesses to be) than a responsible law enforcement official, Dupnik baselessly suggested that the shooting was part of a larger conspiracy and railed against "vitriol" from limited-government activists who are stoking "anger against elected officials."

Dupnik's mouth has done more to stoke self-inflicted ire against elected government clowns than anything the right could muster against him. Had the hyper-partisan Democrat been more in tune with his job than the media airwaves, the murderous, maniacal gunman might have been stopped.

As Dupnik himself has now admitted, Loughner leveled death threats against others that were investigated by law enforcement -- and then apparently shrugged off. Locals note that Loughner's mother worked for the county and may have had some pull. Pima County College campus police reported five serious confrontations with the mentally unstable young man before he was kicked out of the school, which he decried as an unconstitutional "torture facility." Classmates said they feared for their lives. His friends say he was a pothead, a 9/11 Truther and a UFO conspiracist so kooky that even flying-objects adherents spurned him.

Despite zero evidence that Rush Limbaugh, cable news, the tea party movement or immigration enforcement activists had anything to do with Loughner's warped attack, shameless Sheriff Dupnik shows no signs of shutting up.

The worst sheriff in America is walking in the footsteps of another infamous law enforcement official who put fame, ambition and ideology above public safety: disgraced Montgomery County (Md.) Police Chief Charles Moose, the publicity-hungry Keystone Cop who grossly bungled the Beltway sniper attacks in 2002.

Like Dupnik, Moose let politically correct assumptions drive his investigation and incessant press conferences. He insisted on hunting the wrong vehicle while the snipers' Chevy Caprice (spotted by several witnesses and whose license plates had been checked by police at least 10 times during the shooting spree) got away. The hapless Moose clung to the notion that white militants in a nonexistent white box truck were to blame -- leading to a string of unnecessary murders as the real shooters escaped capture for several deadly weeks. No matter. Moose cashed in on his notoriety, inked a fat book deal and beat a hasty retreat to Hawaii.

Dupnik is now following the same ill-gotten path. But decent Americans understand that he and his civilian counterparts have traveled a smear too far. Despite desperate attempts by the progressive left to pin the massacre on the "harsh tone" of its political opponents, a vast majority of Americans reject the cynical campaign to criminalize conservatism, suppress political free speech and capitalize on violent crime for electoral gain.

At the risk of being accused of inciting violence, you might say they've done gone and shot themselves in the foot.

My first reaction to hearing this news was to pray for the dead and wounded.  My second was to think how badly the left wing propagandists…..sorry, main stream news organizations were going to twist this.

I had the same reaction.  If recent history tells us anything, it’s that the liberal media will repeat the same set of lies over and over for at least two weeks and they will stick with some people.  I’ll never understand how anyone can be so gullible, but some are.

Sheriff Dupnik: Inspector Clouseau/Chief Inspector Dreyfus.
He is a caricature of a law enforcement official gone bad. As a previous responder stated: when a leading law enforcement official REFUSES to enforce constitutional laws on the books of his state, he has effectively abdicated his elected position and should be removed from office, post haste. Factor in his obvious blindness to the clues leading up to this tragedy, and he is a doubly-dyed fool in need of a different occupation. I would humbly suggest Driver of Bulldozer at the local trash dump: seems he is only proficient at spreading garbage….makes him a highly-qualified candidate for THAT job, eh?

The first person I thought of when Dupnik started spouting off was Moose, too.  The man who spoke incessantly without ever taking a breath.  According to locals, this blowhard, Dupnik, has been blathering about the evils of conservatism for years.

Sherrif Arapaio in a neighboring county has now been quoted as saying Dupnik should shut up – and be fired.

The Sheriff had the chance to get this guy off the streets and chose not to and labeled him  as not a threat. This was posted two days ago. I am pasting it here for those of you who missed it.

They did. Read the following from an AZ news source.
Jared Loughner is a product of Sheriff Dupnik’s office
    by James Kelley
This is the report that Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has been dreading since the tragic event on Saturday January 8.
The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented it.  He needs to step up and start apologizing to the families of the victims instead of spinning this event to serve his own political agenda.
Jared Loughner, pronounced by the Sheriff as Lock-ner, saying it was the Polish pronunciation. Of course he meant Scott or Irish but that isn’t the point. The point is he and his office have had previous contact with the alleged assailant in the past and that is how he knows how to pronounce the name.
Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff’s Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation. My sympathies and my heart goes out to her and the rest of Mr. Loughner’s family. This tragedy must be tearing them up inside wondering if they had done the right things in trying to manage Jared’s obvious mental instability.
Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. Perhaps with a felony conviction he would never have been able to lawfully by the Glock 9mm Model 19 that he used to strike down the lives of six people and decimate 14 more.
This was not an act of politics. This was an act of a mentally disturbed young man hell bent on getting his 15 minutes of infamy. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately. This tragedy leads right back to Sheriff Dupnik and all the spin in the world is not going to change that fact.
I think the above is the reason the sheriff has been so quick to point the finger so no blame lays at his feat. I also hope the good people will vote for someone else who hopefully will be both even minded and no what is appropriate to comment about.

Many have said that Dubnik was simply exercising his 1st Amendment rights. I believe he has those rights. However in his TV interviews he was speaking as Sheriff Clarence Dubnik, not Citizen Clarence Dubnik. If one of his deputies had said similar things on camera, he would have fired them. I predict that his comments will brought up by the defense during the trial.

Let me clarify some of Michelle’s comments. The suspect’s mother works for the Pima County Parks & Rec. Department. Not even remotely connected to the Sheriffs Department. I doubt that she had an “pull” regarding her son’s previous arrests. The campus police department is actually the Pima Community College Police Department. They have their own Chief of Police and are NOT connected to the Pima County Sheriffs Department in any way. I’m critical of Dubnik’s comments, but the truth is the truth.

This was not Malkin’s assertion, it was evidently voiced by “locals” who were the ones who may not have known exactly where within the county the mother worked.  The parents however horrified they now appear to be, evidently turned a blind eye to their son’s activities, his ravings, and his frequent run-ins with law enforcement could have done an involuntary commitment and at least have had their son evaluated…….of course it is entirely possible that they were as fearful of him as many other people were.

You forgot to mention the fact that almost all of the Federal small arms suppliers have had orders to provide the bulk of their current production in calibers for the Chinese Government / Russia / the Islamic world.
I have a distant relation who works in Arkansas at one of the major suppliers and they are so tied up with producing to support the types of rounds for Russian style weapons that are used in China, the old Soviet block, and the Middle East that they are not allowed to channel much production to supply rounds for Western Weapons – even military ones.
We are using up our military small arm stocks at a rapid rate and they are not being replaced at anywhere near the volume needed to support operations in the future.

There is much talk that Mrs. Palin‘s “cross hairs” ad pushed Mr. Loughner over the edge. But if sloppy use of gun metaphors can drive anyone to shoot congressional representatives, think what we are up against when the president of the United States invokes violent imagery to galvanize his supporters. What are we to make of President Obama‘s warning of “hand-to-hand combat” if the Republicans take over or of his comment that one of his supporters could “tear [Sean Hannity] up” or his “Untouchables” boast that “if they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun” or his advice to supporters of his presidential campaign to argue with Republicans and independents and “get in their face”?
Why would a president boast about figuring out “whose *** to kick” or, in a climate of fear about terrorism, call his opponents “hostage takers”? In a post-Sept. 11 world, is it prudent for the commander in chief to say of his political opponents, “Here’s the problem: It’s almost like they’ve got – they’ve got a bomb strapped to them and they’ve got their hand on the trigger. You don’t want them to blow up”? What about, “But you’ve got to kind of talk to them, ease that finger off the trigger”?

They want to blame guns, or tea-party folks, or politics. I blame the fact that people rely on idiots like the Sheriff to protect themselves instead of being American and fighting for ones freedom and protection. It is not the job of the government to protect the people. We can not rely upon the government to protect us from each other. Criminals have access to guns, regardless how difficult. Any weapon can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, or stolen. Are we so dumb that we create a system where the only protection we have from each other is by way of guys like the Sheriff that blame events like this on people who believe that big government is not the American Idea?

We also know Barack Obama’s advisors are urging him to seize the moment and join the left in blaming the right for this violence. Not only is that disgusting, but should he, the media wringing their hands about the tone better call him out on it — but I won’t hold my breath.
Through it all though, well meaning people on both sides of the ideological and partisan divide are not talking about the one thing that should be talked about — a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
I am no saint. And I am no preacher. This is not intended to be a sermon. But it needs to be said and is not being said. Thankfully God is the God of the imperfect and all of us are.
In all the discussions we’re having, let’s not forget that bad things have happened throughout history, but we are seeing more and more a pattern of violence from those who reject Christ and we are seeing the most extreme rhetoric from those who reject the only real truth while embracing every other historic fad and nonsense as variations of truth. The one true way has been shunned, ridiculed, bastardized, co-opted, and buried over in psycho-babble nonsense, “find your own spirtual self” ****, and haphazard soul damning assorted other garbage.
For a taste of what I’m talking about, look at Timothy McVeigh. Raised a Catholic, McVeigh self-admitted that there was a god of some sorts, but that he was agnostic, had no belief in hell, and had drifted far from anything having to do with Jesus Christ. But the left routinely tries to portray McVeigh as some sort of Christian terrorist. They know not of what they speak.
The topic of faith in Christ makes people cringe. But whether you believe it or not, here is the reality: beyond us is a world we cannot see with our eyes. It impacts us on a daily basis. It is a world of very real angels and very real demons. It is a world of a very real God and a very real Satan, a very real Heaven and a very real Hell.
The back and forth and accusations and lies surrounding Jared Loughner should be a constant reminder to us that there is more at play in our world than what we see. And, frankly, at times like this I am more and more mindful of the great chasm in this world between the saved and damned.

This Sheriff did not do himself any good by his politically motivated comments early on in this incident when he should have just stayed with the facts. But now, when you couple that with the missed opportunities he and others had to deal with Loughner before he went unstable, it suggests that the comments Dupnik made were just him trying to pre-empt what he was afraid was going to happen, and that is the public finding out the truth. The good Sheriff’s creditibility is in the dumper from now on and he really should resign his position as Sheriff.
