What a place… California. During elections when Republicans scored major victories, they elected Jerry Brown as governor and reelected Barbara Boxer to the Senate. Then, there’s San Francisco, which gives us Nancy Pelosi who says that unemployment creates jobs. But nothing takes the cake like Berkeley. Their city council often votes for the most leftwing positions and Un-American stances available. If the American people are on one side of an issue, the Berkeley city council is often on the other. Now, they are considering a resolution to honor the Army private suspected of providing classified military information to WikiLeaks. Can life get any weirder?

As reported in Wired.com, the Berkeley city council’s proposed resolution states, “the imprisoned Army private suspected of providing WikiLeaks with its most significant U.S. releases should be released from prison and praised for his ‘courage in bringing truth to the American people and the people of the world.'”

“If he did what he’s accused of doing, he’s a patriot and should get a medal,” Bob Meola, author of the resolution told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think the war criminals should be the ones prosecuted, not the whistle-blowers.”

Meola is a member of the city’s Peace and Justice Commission, which advises the city council and school board on peace and social justice issues. The commission passed the resolution by a vote of 7-3. It will be up for a City Council vote on Dec. 14.

FoxNews.com reports that Pfc. Bradley Manning is “accused of leaking a video that depicted an Army helicopter attack that left 11 people dead in Baghdad and widely suspected of leaking hundreds of thousands of secret cables to WikiLeaks.”

The actions by the Berkeley City Council have drawn criticism from veterans groups such as AMVETS:

Ryan Gallucci, a spokesman for AMVETS, which represents roughly 180,000 U.S. veterans, said the City Council “would be wise” to vote down the resolution in support of Manning. A city commission has already approved the measure, and the Berkeley City Council will vote on it on Tuesday.

“AMVETS believes it would be appalling to commend someone like Bradley Manning, who has betrayed his country and disgraced the uniform,” Gallucci wrote in a statement to FoxNews.com. “Manning not only compromised American interests across the globe, but he has blood on his hands for our Afghan allies sought out by the Taliban from the first leak.”

Gallucci said Berkeley lawmakers should be “ashamed” that the proposal ever surfaced.

So there you have it. Manning has not even had his trial yet. We do not know the evidence against him or the extent or what he did (or didn’t do). Yet, that doesn’t stop the Berkeley folks from declaring him a hero. If Manning is guilty, then he has not only betrayed his oath and his country, he has also endangered his fellow citizens. Classified military information is classified for a reason.

The vote is scheduled for today. Please let the members of Berkeley’s City Council know what you think. Tell them you stand for America. What do they stand for?
