What are people doing with their food stamps? You may think the answer is obvious, but don’t be so sure. According to a new study from the Department of Agriculture, more and more food stamp recipients are using this government benefit for items other than food. By turning food stamps into cash, our tax dollars are being spent on alcohol, cigarettes, and a host of other non-food items. It’s time for this to stop!

As Fox News reports, “The percentage of Americans selling their food stamps back to stores for cash has increased by 30 percent over the past several years, according to a new Agriculture Department study.”

Recipients typically sell back their benefits at a discount, according to the agency, which said its undercover investigations and research into electronic SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs) transactions focused on stores that showed “suspicious activities.”

However, the numbers were later adjusted to reflect activity within the entire program.

While the trafficking doesn’t directly increase costs for the federal government, it diverts taxpayer money intended to help low-income families get access to a nutritious diet.

Just watch this special report. Here’s a real guy, who’s living off food stamps. Just look at the life he’s living, and WE are supporting it!

This guy actually called his benefits “free money,” and this is exactly the culture that is being promoted by Barack Obama. There were restrictions on these kinds of benefits. People had to work, and the benefits were limited over time. Obama wiped these all away.

But Jason Greenslate is not alone. As the Heritage Foundation reports, there are millions more like him across the country.

Today, there are roughly 47 million Americans receiving food stamps. About 4 million of these individuals are “able-bodied adults without dependents.” In the past, to qualify for food stamps, these able-bodied adults had to work at least part time or participate in some type of work program to qualify for food stamps. If not, their benefits were limited to three months out of every 36 months. However, waivers issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture have allowed states to suspend the work requirement the past few years. Between 2008 and 2010, the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled from approximately 2 million to 4 million.

Today, the federal government operates roughly 80 means-tested welfare programs, and very few promote work. American Enterprise Institute scholar Charles Murray explained to Fox News that government welfare “is systematically undermining a civic culture of independence that was a great American treasure.”

A culture of dependency. That is what the Obama administration is building. With each passing day, more and more people are becoming dependent on the government, and with no incentive to change, why would we expect them to.

Obama treats it as free money… so do some of these recipients. Without responsibility, without restrictions, without guidelines, there will only be one outcome: abuse. This is no way to nurture the next generation of Americans.
