"[President Bush] will hand over his White House keys to Barack Obama, but we cannot let him leave office without resolving one very important issue: he must commute the prison sentences of convicted U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean."
                                                                                                                                    -Phyllis Schlafly

You probably already know about Compean and Ramos, two former Border Agents who were prosecuted - many say WRONGFULLY - by our own government and are now serving a combined 23 years in prison.

         Their crime?

Many will say it was simply protecting the border from an illegal alien dope-smuggler or as Congressman Tom Tancredo put it, "doing their jobs."

Andy Ramirez with Friends of the Border Patrol, claims Compean and Ramos were prosecuted to send a message.

         According to Ramirez:

"This is the greatest miscarriage of justice I have ever seen... and has sent a very loud message to the other Border Patrol agents: If you confront a smuggler, this is what will happen to you."

President Bush's  failure to pardon or commute the sentences of these agents - who many believe were railroaded by an overzealous government - is, at the very least, perplexing.

The Washington Times called President Bush's failure to pardon them "blindness" and also wrote:

"It's both baffling and disappointing that President Bush has not already pardoned two U.S. Border Patrol agents imprisoned since 2007... Time is running out for Mr. Bush to act to correct what one Congressman calls 'the worst miscarriage of justice that I have witnessed in the 30 years I've been in Washington.'"

         Congressman Tom Tancredo again:

"These are the kinds of men whose government failed and destroyed them - all while they were serving a cause greater than themselves. These men deserve justice. I, and many other members of Congress, have repeatedly called upon President Bush to exercise his power to pardon - but he has not done so."

         Congressman Ed Royce stated:

"Ramos and Compean have been living in the torture of solitary confinement for almost two years for something they never should have been prosecuted for in the first place. We are pleading with the Pardon Attorney to make a favorable recommendation of commutation to the President so he can finally do the right thing by these men and their families."

One thing is very clear to us. President-elect Barack Hussein Obama WILL NEVER LIFT A FINGER to help these brave former Border Agents.

That's why we must take action RIGHT NOW and demand that President Bush free these American heroes. If we don't, these brave men will be forgotten by an Obama Administration that wants open borders and they will ROT IN PRISON FOR A DECADE!

We can stop that injustice if we act immediately!

If You Have Not Heard The Story Of Compean And Ramos, Here's What Happened...

Agents Compean and Ramos, were in pursuit of Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, an illegal alien dope-smuggler. Davila had just come into the country in a van loaded down with 743 pounds of marijuana.

Once spotted by the Border Patrol Davila attempted to flee back to Mexico.  At some point, Davila ditched the van and continued toward the border on foot.  The agents called for him to halt but Davila kept running.

Eventually Compean caught-up to Davila. Davila feigned surrender momentarily, then assaulted Compean and resumed fleeing toward the Mexican border.

Pursuit continued until, according to Compean, Davila pivoted toward Compean and brandished a shiny object.

         Compean and Ramos both fired.

Unbeknownst to Compean and Ramos at the time, one of them apparently hit Davila in the buttock; but that didn't slow Davila down.   He turned around, continued running and jumped into a vehicle waiting for him on the other side of the border.

The incident was all but forgotten.

Then weeks later, Officer Rene Sanchez -- an Arizona Border Agent -- made contact with higher-ups in the Border Patrol in Texas and told them two Border Agents (Compean and Ramos) had shot an unarmed man.

Later, it was discovered that Sanchez and dope-dealing Davila, were old friends. They grew up together back in Mexico.

In what probably constituted the first instance of zealous over-kill on the part of our government, SWAT teams arrived at the homes of the two law enforcement officers and arrested them as their wives and children looked on in horror.

U.S. District Attorney Johnny Sutton - who incidentally is an old crony of President Bush and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales - threw the book at Compean and Ramos.

In what may constitute the second instance of government over-kill, Sutton piled on the charges against Compean and Ramos when they would not accept his initial plea-bargain offer, admit guilt and receive light sentences.

He even charged them with using a gun during the commission of a felony... a tack on charge that carries a MINIMUM MANDATORY 10-YEAR SENTENCE... no time off for good behavior... no parole... no sentencing discretion for the judge.

Ironically, Congress passed that law to discourage hardened criminals from using guns.   No one ever thought it would be used to prosecute a law enforcement officer.

         Was it excessive?

One of the jurors cried openly in court. Later, she and another juror made a disturbing accusation. They claimed that they were mis-instructed by the jury foreman and otherwise would have NEVER voted guilty.

Even Sutton, when asked by Laura Ingraham if he thought the sentences were excessive, said "Yes" without hesitation.

That's rather strange, when you consider that as District Attorney, the decision to tack on the charge was Sutton's.

If Sutton thought the sentences were excessive, why did he make the rather unorthodox decision to bring the charges in the first place?

Railroaded To Appease The Mexican Government... ?

Many believe that Compean and Ramos were railroaded to send a friendly and unspoken message to the government of Mexico that the United States had no intention of securing the border.

         WorldNetDaily.com wrote:

"[T]he criminal investigation of Ramos and Compean began after the Mexican consulate contacted the U.S. Consulate in Mexico... and the Mexican Consulate's demand led to the indictment and conviction of Ramos and Compean."

And let us not forget Andy Ramirez's statement about this prosecution:

"... has sent a very loud message to the other Border Patrol agents: If you confront a smuggler, this is what will happen to you."

Were two law enforcement agents railroaded... set-up... turned into sacrificial lambs to appease Mexico, and feed the hogs of corporate greed who wanted cheap labor from South of the Border?

The accusation may be moot, because most people acknowledge that Compean and Ramos are, at the very least, the victims of an unusual set of circumstances; an overzealous prosecution and an over the top initial investigation by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

And admittedly, there are some unanswered questions in regards to the aggressive nature of the DHS investigation.

Congressmen John Culbertson, Ted Poe, Michael McCaul and Kenny Marchant met with officials from DHS in September of 2007 to get some answers.

According to these Congressmen, DHS told them - among other things - that Compean and Ramos had confessed to knowingly shooting an unarmed man and one of them had in fact stated that he "wanted to shoot a Mexican" that day.

But when asked for documentation to support those contentions, DHS STONEWALLED, prompting the House Homeland Security Subcommittee to compel DHS Inspector General Richard Skinner to testify some four months later.

When confronted, Skinner sheepishly testified under questioning from Culbertson, that DHS official had "misled" them.

         Culbertson concluded:

"DHS didn't turn over the reports to us to back up their September 26 accusations for one simple reason -- the reports never existed. Why did it take DHS four months to admit their error? I wonder how much more has DHS told the public and Congress about Ramos and Compean that simply isn't true?"

         Why indeed?

Fast Forward To The Present...

President Bush has issued several rounds of pardons since Compean and Ramos were imprisoned.  Recently he pardoned a bunch of convicted tax evaders, embezzlers, and he even commuted the sentence of a drug-smuggling rap star.

But he has missed multiple opportunities to pardon or commute the sentences of Compean and Ramos!

         Why?

No one knows, but comments from Congressman Dana Rohrabacher to Lou Dobbs back in March of 2007 accurately reflect the feelings of a lot of people who are frustrated by this entire travesty.

         Rohrabacher to Dobbs:

"One of the most disturbing aspects of this case has been the reaction to the White House and the reaction from President Bush to those people who have been basically begging for mercy for these two men, and begging for justice, in a case that should never have been brought."

"And the president, the more that we have asked for a pardon, the more we have challenged the prosecutors in this case, the more he's dug his heels in, and the more vengeful and merciless the prosecution has become. They haven't even -- of course, we asked, just let them go out on bond during appeal, because we know their lives are at risk. And the White House answered that by, the next day, going to the judge, saying: We demand that they stay in prison.

"So, it's a sort of a -- it's a very mean-spirited thing. I don't think, unless the American people rise up with righteous anger, that the White House will listen."

Time for Compean and Ramos is running out. The time to rise up with righteous anger is now!

Here's What Others Are Saying...

         Congressman Rohrabacher again:

"President Bush still has time to do the right thing and commute wrongly imprisoned Border Agents Ramos and Compean, If he doesn't, while at the same time pardoning blatant criminals, then he will be remembered for the personal persecution and values that decision reflects.

"The fact that the president has neglected to free these men from their imprisonment while freeing drug dealers, embezzlers and other criminals is insulting to the American people who have been begging and pleading for the president to release the agents whose prosecution was unjust from the beginning."

Phyllis Schlafly, had this to say:

"The end of President Bush's final term is quickly approaching. Less than two months remain until he will hand over his White House keys to Barack Obama, but we cannot let him leave office without resolving one very important issue: he must commute the prison sentences of convicted U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean."

          Schlafly also said:

"The severity of these charges and the harshness of the punishment are totally disproportionate to the violation in question. Even the illegal drug smuggler, Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, was sentenced to less prison time than our fellow American border guards."

         Columnist Doug Patton has written:

"... I will lose my last ounce of respect for this man as my president if he does not pardon Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean before he leaves office. These men put their lives on the line for us just as surely as our brave troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and justice demands a full presidential pardon."

        The Washington Times:

"If President Bush would simply pardon the unjustly imprisoned former Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, we could all rest much easier knowing that in the United States, a foreign drug smuggler's word does not prevail over the word of federal agents in the line of duty."

Note that these statements come from prominent conservatives and conservative organizations.

Even liberals have chimed in.  Senator Dianne Feinstein, for example, after reviewing the evidence, said: "it became very clear the sentences did not match the crime" and signed a letter, asking President Bush to commute the sentences.

We have so little time left. Please join these distinguished figures in both parties -- who adamantly believe these men have suffered a grievous injustice.
