What's New? 'Sanctuary' Restaurants

January 6, 2017 at 11:55 am 65 News

Chicago’s Honey Butter Fried Chicken is among a couple of dozen restaurants across the country to sign onto a new “sanctuary restaurant” movement meant to offer safe workplaces for immigrants, Muslims and other communities they feel are under threat in the current political climate.

The movement is a joint project of ROC United, a national group that advocates for higher wages for restaurant workers, and Presente.org, whose mission is to “advance Latinx power” (Latinx is a gender-neutral alternative to Latino and Latina).

According to a news release Wednesday, sanctuary restaurants do not allow harassment of individuals based on immigrant or refugee status or race, religion, gender or sexual orientation; participate in peer networks to exchange ideas for protecting targeted workers; and agree to place prominent signs that state “SANCTUARY RESTAURANTS: A Place At the Table for Everyone” at their establishments.

ROC United co-founder and co-director Saru Jayaraman said in the news release that restaurant workers “are on the front lines of discrimination and hate in America.”

“While the restaurant industry suffers from a labor shortage, anti-immigrant and sexist rhetoric is now commonplace. Sanctuary Restaurants seeks to create the world we want — establishments free from hate and discrimination, where everyone has a seat at the table,” Jayaraman said.

ROC in November had urged signatures for an open letter to President-elect Donald Trump penned by RAISE, its subgroup of supportive employers, asking him to alleviate fear of deportation and harassment of immigrant workers in the restaurant industry.

“We must retain each and every employee and we depend heavily, especially in metropolitan areas, on immigrant workers,” the letter said. “Many have lived in this country for decades, paid taxes, and contributed to our industry; some acquire their own restaurants and provide even more jobs. The restaurant industry must maintain a robust pool of workers; we need immigrants and non-immigrants, and people of all races, religions, genders, and sexual orientations.”

While it is unknown how immigration policy will take shape under Trump, blocking undocumented immigration was a major talking point of Trump’s campaign, and reports of anti-immigrant hostilities in communities following his win have left some people fearful. Trump said after the election that he wants to deport people with criminal records who are in this country illegally , a number he put at 2 to 3 million, and one of his position papers suggests mandating E-Verify, a program for confirming a worker’s legal status, for private employers nationwide.

The leisure and hospitality industry, of which restaurants are a part, is one of the largest employers of undocumented workers in the U.S., according to a Pew Research Center analysis of federal data.

Wednesday’s release announcing the sanctuary restaurants movement said dozens of restaurants have signed on and listed a sample of 24, which included Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Colors restaurants in Detroit and New York. Honey Butter, a casual spot in the Avondale neighborhood, was the only Chicago restaurant on the list.

“It’s a positive response to what at times has been not so productive or positive rhetoric in our national politics,” said Honey Butter co-owner Josh Kulp, who offers his workers paid sick and parental leave and advocates for pro-worker policies. Uncertainty about the future has caused a lot of “fear and anxiety” among workers in the industry, he said, and “what we’re trying to say to them and to our customers is that we’re a safe haven, and we’re a restaurant committed to putting our neighborhood and our community and our staff first.”

“I hope that good businesses all over the country already do these things,” Kulp added. “Sometimes it’s important to make it clear, especially in times when you feel that not everyone is on that same page.”

Need to fight fire with fire. Maybe there has to be a law that all restaurants must place a sign up that says they are legal or illegal, then law abiding people can boycott these law breaking restaurants. Tax payers revenge and if they get caught breaking the law burn them where it counts in their wallet. Big, Big Fines.

The illegal immigration problem in this country is and has always been about one thing…CHEAP LABOR! Our borders are some of the most unguarded borders on earth. Try crossing into Mexico and see what happens. If the local police, Federalēs, or drug cartels don’t get you, the desert will.
It was recently reported that Elon Musk, president of Tesla Motor Company, was paying his Eastern European workers $5/hr. to build a new manufacturing plant here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I guarantee that the Chicago restaurant owner was not concerned about the wefare of his illegal employees, only about his profits. Illegals get no Worker’s Comp., overtime extra pay, vacation time, sick pay, etc. The employer(often keeping a separate set of books) doesn’t pay S.S. tax, give incentive bonuses, or care about a safe work place environment.
America can’t “save the world” or indeed be it’s nanny. What would have happened to the Titanic survivors if everyone had tried to crowd into the few available lifeboats…NO ONE WOULD HAVE SURVIVED!
The average life span of most governments is 300-400yrs. America is at 240 and counting. WAKE UP AMERICA!!

“The illegal immigration problem in this country is and has always been about one thing…CHEAP LABOR!”

How else are you going to pay for entitlement programs where some people believe they have a right to live at the expense of others?

When Ronald Reagan was president entitlements were 20% of the federal budget, today, with the interest on the debt, entitlements are 58% of the budget, throw in pensions for all the employees needed to run these entitlements and it is close to 70%

70% of the entire federal budget, today, a budget which is still 22% of GDP

We need to exploit labor to pay for all the stealing, but nothing new here, Frédéric Bastiat wrote of this in his book “The Law” 167 years ago in 1850

Nor is the collapses it always causes, new, either

Entitlements are theft and selling children in to slavery

Social Security over the life of the program has paid out $97 trillion while only collecting $63 trillion, a difference of $34 trillion, one and one half times the national debt.

Medicare/Medicaid, the largest budgetary item, pays out a $1 trillion per year nearly all from borrowed money because they just could not steal enough from the unemployed nor those Elon pays five bucks per hour.

The solution is NOT to pay labor more money, they will see their pay increase by over $20,000 per year if we just stopped the stealing

      Shocking, but true, OVER $20,000

Why do we even have Medicare?

“Before Medicare’s creation, approximately 60% of those over 65 had health insurance, with coverage often unavailable or unaffordable to many others, because older adults paid more than three times as much for health insurance as younger people.” – Wikipedia

So unfair, old people paying three times more than younger people, who were paying next to nothing, so old people were paying three times that.

So, what is a government to do?

Make it so the old people really pay nothing and the younger people now pay $10,000 per year for the old people and another $10,000 for their own.

For a total of $20,000 which is over a third of the per capita income of $56,000, something most families don’t even make

But the true cost, it has made the whole nation sick and about to die

      Simple solution, reward health

60% of the $3.27 trillion spent every year for sick care is diet related

While it is doubtful the entire $2 trillion could be saved by people eating better, it would result in some young AND OLD people having to pay less, a lot less, not to mention getting out of the wheelchair, kicking the oxygen bottle addiction, while not having to spend a fortune buying a tent to wear as a shirt

Imagine that, a balanced diet and a balanced budget

Here’s a group that is advocating higher wages getting restaurants to sign on to a program to “protect” illegal aliens in the work place when the very same work places are the ones hiring the illegals because they will work for less and they don’t have to pay FICA for them making them even cheaper to employ. Is sanity totally gone in today’s world?

Yes, sanity is elusive on this issue. I taught English to illegal migrants for years in a majority illegal migrant community near L.A. and I have a suggestion for legislation that suddenly came to me. Many of my students had multiple kids and owned property and cars, despite being illegal. How about requiring all businesses to require applicants to prove that they’ve begun the process of learning English and begun the process of becoming legal? This wouldn’t be impossible. Simply notify businesses that in order to renew their business license they must provide documentation for each employee showing enrollment in an English program and hiring of an immigration attorney annually. For every employee they fail to provide it for they’d be taxed an additional $5000 annually and the business license wouldn’t be issued. Money talks.

Out of my check comes $130 a month for Medicare, then there is a law that says I have to have PArt D or I can’t get A, SOooo I have to buy not only a $89 a month drug policy[I don’t take any] and I also have my supplemental which is another $357 a month. That is a total of $576 for a healthy person ,no cost to system. My co-pays in NY are $50 a visit. My deductible must be met on ALL three before they pay for any outpatient care. I cut my hand on a bank’s ATM and it cost me $2100 out of pocket.A tetanus shot, three stitches. My vet is cheaper LOL I paid $350 for a surgery on my dog and 21 days of the same antibiotics I was charged $423 at the “preferred ” pharmacy for less than 1/2 the number of

“To JOTA: you are 100% wrong about Seniors paying nothing”

Great then you won’t mind if we got rid of it, since all it does is drive up cost, lower quality, limit access

But the reason most won’t get rid of it is because they get MORE than it cost them so they are in fact getting, that particular, health care at no cost to themselves

In fact, most Medicare recipients will receive three TIMES MORE than they paid

So while this is in error
“Make it so the old people really pay nothing ”

      Should read

Make it so the older people get something for nothing and the younger people now pay $10,000 per year for the older people and another $10,000 for their own.

If people would just wake up to the fact, government gives nothing away they did not first take from someone else and because of government inefficiency it always ends up cost more for the same service

Will need to do some research but bet you now pay more of your own money for health care than did people before Medicare

In effect, all they have done is make everyone pay three times or more, for the same, or possibly less health care, not just older people

Ya know, I’m just really “over” the arrogance of these people who call others “haters” because someone believes in enforcing and upholding the laws of this nation. No one has a right to come to this nation. No one!

The ones who believe in ignoring the law and thumbing their nose at American citizens are the real haters.

If someone doesn’t have a problem with someone breaking the law to enter this country and then giving someone a job that an American citizen could have had, their business should be shut down and the owners should either be thrown in jail or thrown out of this country on their keester.

Let them go set up their restaurant in Mexico and they can hire all the workers they wish, but get them out of this country.

businesses that employ illegals should be penalized with a large fine for each worker. Large enough to break them should they continue to break the laws. Force them to pay or shut down. Large corporations just pay the fine because it’s cheaper than hiring Americans. This needs to stop. Make the fines large enough to do grave damage and they’ll stop.

Many of you seem to believe that illegals are a problem. Well I’ve traced back this problem to its roots and I have concluded that it is the fault of the corrupt govt of Mexico, with their foolish leader Enrique Peña Nieto. Many of the non-criminal illegals escape from Mexico because of the abhorrent poverty and violence found in Mexican cities. Gangs such as the Latin Kings rule the streets, and hundreds of people are killed every month in Mexico’s poorest parts. To add insult to injury, the military and the police are SUPER CORRUPT. My friend said that in some parts, the police will, on purpose, put bags of cocaine and meth in the pockets of people who pass by, without them knowing, and then will proceed to arrest them. That’s how bad it is. Trust me, when Mexico gets an actual EFFECTIVE AND STRONG leader, we will see a definite decrease in the flow of illegal immigration here.

I agree many are coming here due to corruption and a flouting of the law in Mexico and elsewhere. While this may sound harsh, this is not the problem of American taxpayers, who are trying their best to prevent the same here, to make things right for you; particularly when you disregard OUR laws, and enter our country illegally. It shows a deep lack of respect for our citizens, and the more you demand of us, the deeper that disrespect goes.

When people unite, in any country, and demand an end to corruption, only then does it cease. It is up to every individual to enact change in their homeland. It is not up to the citizens of the US. We have our own problems to fix. We don’t expect someone else to come in and do it for us, nor do we expect anyone to take care of us and protect us should we decide to leave the US to live somewhere else.

Just because a restaurant says it is a safe haven for illegals doesn’t make it so!

I will not support nor enter any business that employs criminals. Remember that illegal aliens, undocumented workers, or whatever other name they are called are law breakers by being where they are without legal authority.

I have great compassion for humanity as a whole, but making those who come into our country illegally, a protected class of people, when we have no idea who they are, what their motives may be, or even where some of them originate from, is just plain wrong. Not all want to assimilate or become Americans. The statement that some have been here for decades speaks directly to that. If you have been here that long, you should have sought a way to be here legally by now.

Sweeeet! It doesn’t get ANY better than providing a list that will make ICE’s job sooooo much easier! This kills two birds with one stone, a list of places where I will NEVER set foot AND a list for ICE! In fact, the DOJ & IRS will be interested in their list too! Love how arrogant and stupid come together to foil these scumbags. They just don’t get it, the jig is UP! Elections have consequences!

I can imagine what kinds of people will gravitate to these places. Doesn’t sound like anyplace I’d park and eat. Can’t imagine they’ll last long.

I hate to tell you but there are illegal migrants doing custodial duties and food prep in many middle- to higher-end restaurants all over L.A., not just at fast food joints. My son works at a convention center in an L.A. suburb with many such folks. And while shopping in our upscale old town area in the late morning I’ve witnessed individuals who are without doubt undocumented Central American and Mexican workers locking their bikes up around restaurants before the lunch rush. They’re cheap labor without work comp and benefits. Owners would raise already inflated prices if forced to hire legal workers for more menial tasks, if they could even find people willing to do that work. But it’s time to make hiring illegal migrants less attractive to stop this practice that benefits neither the migrants nor taxpaying legal residents.

And if we had politicians and DA’s willing to enforce the bloody law, that wouldn’t happen as much as it does… AS Firms would be too SCARED to hire so damn many illegals..

Since there is no way they can count on a government bailout in the next four years they are going to find out how a cherish ideal and the bottom line works in a free market where things ONLY work if both parties get what they want

One party demands everyone kiss their a** and the sanctuary restaurants said they would love to

Will it give them a competitive advantage?

It all depends on whether they charge enough for the service and those demanding will pay for it

Which contradicts the point to offering sanctuary in the first place, not having to pay for it

Just give them all your money, now
